Current most influential metal band
Which new band around now do you all think will influence future metalheads, such as priest and sabbath have influenced us today? I myself would say either
Mastodon, just because of pure awesomeness
or
Shadows Fall, because they mix heavy thrash with death metal, adding in metallica style solo's.

Well, I personally don't believe any of them are really influential yet, but that's just me. DOn't get me wrong, I enjoy Shadows Fall, but am I influenced by them? Not really. I believe there are two sides to this answer, the good and the bad sides of newer influential music.
Bad:
Korn. It's unfortunate, but every shit "radio metal" band that's around today is basically just a carbon copy of those tracksuit wearing cancer cells. So, in thier own hideous way, Korn are influential. Not to me, but they are the proud fathers of Memento, Limp Bizkit, Flaw etc...
Good:
Nevermore. Sure, they formed from the ashes of Sanctuary about ten years ago, but they are one of the fewer new bands trying to push metal back on track. They may not be brand new or whatever, but they are newer, and somewhat modern, but are putting their musical abilities to good use, infleuencing metal in a good way.
So ok, those are the two I can think of. Nevermore may not be extremely influential right now, but they're working on it. Korn has spawned a breed of shit bands. Like rabbits they procreate, but as opposed to a fluffy little ball of fun, we get the steaming cunt rag that is Flaw. Yeah, they're influential, but definitely not in a positive way.
So there.

Been there, done that. But just for a change, I'll contribute.
My two cents: Nile.

Cannibal Corpse. Sure, there were many death metal bands that pre-dated them, but they sort of ushered in a newer sound that has since become very popular. They themselves sounded HEAVILY influenced by Possessed, at least on their older stuff. Also, Suffocation. Even if I'm wrong, Suffocation still rule.

You really can't say that one band has influenced everybody. In one way or another, maybe, but you can't say that one band influences everybody at the moment.

No shit captain obvious. It's whats the most abundant influence that you hear.
I'd say that its the "metalcore" sound that I hear the most in new bands, or at least around here.

To me, the most influental band would be Dystopia. Because of them I took up drums. Oh yeah, I USED to listen to KoRn which is why I have a 7 st. guitar. Now I hate them.

No, I don't regret getting a 7 string. It's just that I hate KoRn and they are the only reason I got one. I'm glad now that I got one, and I must admit I think some stuff from earlier Korn is alright.

i find that US death metal (i.e. brutal death) is currently spawning 1 band a minute, so im going to say that currently bands such as Deeds Of Flesh are shaping what will become of metal in the next couple of years

Vehemence, As I Lay Dying, and Killswitch Engage
I really enjoy Killswitch's new album. I can't get the title track out of my head.

Personally speaking, the last great metal band that have left a lasting impression were Metallica. As I have said before, the progression has been:
Sabbath - Metallica - nobody.
Unfortunately it will probably be this way for another 5 years or so.

yeah, uhh, wrong, metallica may have been influential, but hardly the last band to have left a lasting impression, nor are they current
id say fear factory as another, they helped to start the whole nu-metal thing, even though they kick ass

I'd have to disagree. They are the last mainstream band to have left a major impact on ALL of metal. Not just one sub-genre. So your suggestion is invalid.
And Psycho even said that they weren't current. S/he said that nobody is right now.
And Fear Factory isn't exactly current either.

i was talking about them having a big influence on metal today. with metallica, i havent heard much of anything sounding like metallica today.

read the titles dumbasses "Current most influential metal band "
That means artist that are influences now, NOT sabbath, or "old thrash" or even slayer. The likes of Nile, CoB, and Opeth.

I think all industrialized bands or NU-(metal) bands. Those bands have got very famous in mainstream culture, so I think that UNDERGROUND bands wont influence. I have asked from some totally non-metaller friend of mine that does he knows any metal bands. He answers something like System of a Down, Korn, Slipknot, Linkin Park or other same kind of bands. Maybe also Metallica (thanks for ST. ANGER).
So if my assumption is correct, where all METAL MUSIC is going to? This means that all old-school influenced metal will die and everyone will make crappy modern nu-metal or some other pseudo-metal music.

i'd also like to add machine head... not current but their most recent album is as, if not more, influential as their first album was.

music is constantly influencing itself. old metal acts are being influenced by bands they have influenced and such. I think you can trace it back to who started what, but saying who is most influential now is hard to do.

I have a lot of friends that seem to be influenced by Cradle of Filth, Tool, and Slipknot. They seem like they pick up guitar just to learn one song. KoRn goes on the list. I like those bands I listed (except KoRn, there last album blew but there first was pretty cool) but I doubt they'll be remembered, except Tool. It'll probably be some mainstream black-metal band. They all pick up BC Rich's to try to out-metal everyone else and pretend to like COF and Slayer, but they can't name one of their songs. I would hope it be Lamb Of God for pure ass-kicking. Pantera's time has gone but them too.

Hell yea log fuckin rules i cant wait for there new album, children of bodoms new album has alexi singing some pantera lyrics and sixponder is all pantera style, i thought that was badass since there a different style metal that you would think in no way influenced bodom, but it did, bodom is like progressive/melodic black metal, one of the few bands that mix's such good styles together all in one.
Alexi is god..

Personally, I think Flaw is pretty awesome. They do have a part of them that makes them sound sorta Disturbedish, but after listening to the new album, it seems that that's been lost. And if we're talking about influential like making you think, I think that Flaw would be pretty high on the list. My minds racing with ideas listening to them. However, if this wasn't on current bands, I'd give it to Zepplin, the gods of metal.

i reckon
As far as influential I think its guna be all the new metal bands...
I think a lot of wot u all have said is what u hope will be influential when I reckon any1 gettin into metal these days or in future is struck with Metallica, Linkin Park, Slipknot... obvious bands like that. From around here in N.Ireland it seems any1 gettin into it starts with Nirvana how \m/... <yawn> then onto metallica etc... they all seem to go the same way regardless, New metal seems the be the 'thing with the kids' unless any1 in future is learnin from sum1 else they all follow the same trend i think... SO they'll all pick up their guitars and attempt to rip off metallica or attempt to play Linkin Park but wont b able to cuz its so remixed they just cant....
They're All Doomed...
Thats just my opinion tho...
Probably ranted off subject too, DAMN i hate gettin caught up in thots
