effect pedals and tube amps...
Sorry if this has already been discussed but i was wondering what the problem is with using an effect pedal with a tube amp. i use a gnx3 with a crate 30 tube amp and it works great for me... and also i was wondering if different tube amps sound differnt if only an effect pedal is used with them( i know this is a noob question but all the diffent amps i try sound the same using pedals, just so you know im a guitar player, i dont know shit about equipment, thats why im here...)

There's nothing wrong with it, unless you're an elitist snob who thinks that if it's not a 5150 with the gain cranked that it sucks.

word... but at the same time, using a cheesey pedal for distortion isnt as good as using the amp's distortion(as long as the amp has decent distortion.)
i'm not sure exactly what the question is, but a pedal will sound different with a different amp.. and an amp will sound different with a different pedal....

who would crank the gain on a 5150... putting it past 5 is already too much.

hahahaha... no, slipknot doesnt use 5150's...
but my guitarist has the gain on his 5150 at like 7 and thats plenty... the gain just becomes less usable the more you turn it up imo. not only that between 7 and 10 you can barely tell a difference in the amount of gain... but the difference in operation noise(not just feed back) is way unexceptable to me..

A stock 5150 will sound worse than slipknot imo. Just because it has this stupid crossover distortion thing going on. Better tubes will help.

You will not sound like Slipknot by using a 5150, sorry if that was how it was taken. I was only saying that to much gain sounds very noisy and sucks=slipknot

you guys have no minds when it comes to tone, one of you disses slipknot so the rest of you join in thinking it will make you seem like you know what you're doing....
slipknot's tone isnt that bad, i've heard much worse tone from better bands.

so why do people even use pedals if they make tube amps sound like shit? and by pedals do you mean wah's and flange effects too? or just distortion pedals? and arnt there any super high quality pedals that dont make tubes sound like bad? id think that was very possible.

Better tubes will not help. Crossover distortion is caused by the bias set to cold. A bias mod is the only way to stop crossover distortion.

it's not effect pedals that will make the amp sound like shit.... we're talking about the kinds of idiots that buy 5150's or mesa rectos and then use a boss metalzone or digitech metal master for distortion.... because metalzones are crap, especially compared to the amps distortion on nice high gain tube amps.
why do you think a mesa dual recto costs like $1,500(u.s.)? because the distortion is awsome. it's a waste of money to buy a nice amp like that and use pedals with it.
some tube/valve distortion pedals are nice or can sound nice with a tube amp, but it's pointless if you already have a nice amp with good distortion.

if you're getting a buzzy fizz sound from a recto, it's either broken or you're doing something wrong.

Recto's are biased pretty cold, though not as cold as a 5150. Recto's are biased somewhere around 20mA if i remember correctly... which still causes crossover distortion. SO maybe thats what hes talking about

I hate Rectos, and you're paying for a hand made product and the name. 5150s are biased just as cold, if not more but the amps have 2 completely different sounds. I never put my pregain past 5 on my 5150 because I perfer a tight distortion where i can hear everything i play and not just static.

i use a peavey classic 50watt, a zoom 2020 effects processor, and a digitech metalmaster, and i have a very good sound coming out of that amp, i run the amp clean though, it has an awesome clean sound, the distortion sucks horsecock, which is why i use the effects i do, if i am going for a harsh death metal sound, i use the metalmaster, for the more opeth tinged stuff i write, i use my zoom 2020.

Yup 5150's are biased even colder. Dosent matter they both have crossover distortion.

i don't get why metal kids buy amps like the peavey classic 30 and classic 50.... they don't suck, they just arent geared for high gain.. and with how much a classic 30 or classic 50 costs you could have bought a decent metal amp.

i dont play just metal, plus i love how it sounded clean, it sounds just fine with my zoom or metalmaster in front of it, plus it was only like 150-200 bucks.
btw - i am gonna get a laney vh100r or tt50h, that is, once i get a job.

with what you spent on that amp and those pedals, plus a little extra saved up, you could maybe buy a decent amp that doesnt require the pedals? i dunno, but the peavey classic seires combos do not suck.

Turn the mids all the way down. Blast the lows and highs and turn the gain all the way up. That gives you the best sound

I don't see anything wrong with using a pedal to "layer" your tube tone. Tubes give a certain response along with the tone that solidstate doesn't. I use and MT-2 or my RP300 with my 5150 and I get some killer tones out of it.
My rig sounds like a metal zone AND a 5150.
Another thing when using effects with tube amps. You have to crank the amp and push the power tubes to get that killer sound. It's hard to do that sometimes and keep the volume at an acceptable bedroom volume. Pedals help with that also.

How can you disgrace your 5150 buy using some shitty ass pedal. A 5150 does not need help in the gain department. And my 5150 sound awesome at quiet volumes, the resonance control is their for a reason.

hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!
good noise suppressors:
boss ns-2
mxr smartgate
isp decimator
they all run about $100 ish new...
good wahs....
morley: classic, bad horsie(vai), and power wah(tremonti)
dunlop: gcb95, 535Q, dime wah's
boss: pw-10 v-wah
ibanez: screamin deamon or what ever.... it's the new one, it's actually really good imo. looks kinda silly though.
vox: clyde mycoy, and v847
different wahs have different ranges in stuff, so you kinda have to pick your favorite.....

so these noise suppressors wont change the sound of my amp right? it just eliminates some of the noise... so its not going to make my amp sound digital or effect the volume at all...

do all of these have a way to stomp it off and back on easly? it looks like the ibanez does, but the vox is just a pedal and nothing else...

if you use em right..... some people like a really stiff gate for a quick chug and then immediate silence... others like it to be almost unnoticeable.... even be able to get controlled feedback....
i forgot to add i'm selling my hush super C if you're interested in that... which you probably arent because it's a rack mount unit and i don't know if you're willing to mess with that shit.... but just so you know....

the ibanez has a switch on the side which is cool if you just want a quick nasal/filtered sound from not rocking the wah wah, you can use it like a filter ish stompbox..... other wahs usually need to be pressed forward all the way in order to switch on and off.....

Another question... what exactly do EQ pedals do (like a boss GE-7) and are they worth getting?
and whats the differnce between a noise gate and a noise supressor?

An EQ pedal adjust the eq more than a built in EQ can. They can tighten the lows and such. Basically they just give you more options to your sound.

eq's just allow you to fine tune certain frequencies better... buy boosting or cutting those frequencies.
got an amp that is a pain in the ass to eq? throw a GE-7 in the fx loop and give her a wirl.....
for noise gates and suppressors...
i'm not to smart on exactly the differences between them... if any. what do you have in mind?

well, i can vouche that the ns-2 is awsome... i used to own one, but i sold off all of my pedals so i could go rack. my guitarist uses it now. i'm not sure what kind of metal you're referring to. but we play kinda in the vain of unearth/glassjaw/refused/theredchord/radiohead/everytimeidie/scarlet/zao/lambofgod/ect.... so we require good noise supression because the we play really fucking loud and distortion can get really heavy sometimes + we do lots of random pauses n' shit. before he had the ns-2 everytime he needed to pause you could hear a really loud hum and painful squeals..... he was against using a noise supressor at first, because he thought it would suck his tone, but nope. he depends on it now.
i think the nf-1 is fine, but it's older technology.

true, but you just can't forget the best fucking wah pedal on the globe.
if you haven't tried it, go for it, its fully adjustable in every possible way, if you got the Teese, you'll never need another wah.

nothing beats the teese wah
if I'm ever going to use any pedal, its going to be that one, though I don't like using pedals AT ALL.
