I want to get a Gibson Flying V guitar and put emgs in it. An 85 and 81 but which year did they make the best ones in?

Keep the 490R and 498T
The qualety on Gibsons is said to have droped because they don't use as fine wood anymore to save the rainforest. So and older one should be better I guess.

some time in the 80s would be good. early 90s were supposedly bad, although i don't have experience with them.
i had a 2003 les paul and it was good, just didn't like it compared to my rg 570, so i sold it. the newer ones are better than the mid 90s gibsons.

If youre planning on putting EMGs in it then the quality of the wood won't make that huge of a difference. It will make a difference just not as much as if there was a passive pickup in there.

Am I the only one who's annoyed by this guy asking a question with the meaning "In which year did they make the best EMG 85s and 81s?", and then getting answers to another question? Sure, that may be what he meant, but why, why, why didn't he write that?

Good enough for John Connelly, good enough for me. i didn't know about the new/old wood types though. I also prefer 24 frets, which is wh I never got an Explorer. Can you tune a 22-fret guitar up to produce a 24-fret sound?

I get away fine with just 22 frets.
And to tune a guitar with 22 frets to make it sound like 24 frets you would have to tune the whole thing up a step which is pointless and really is stupid a stupid question..

aside from breaking or something stupid, the quality of wood will have basically no impact at all on the sound of the guitar if you put emgs in it. that's why i always get annoyed when i see les pauls with active emgs. oh well.

Yeah whats the point of spending a lot of money on a guitar made out of quality tone wood only to use emgs to get a generic tone. Hell you could put emgs in a squier and get almost, definatly not as good but, the same tone.

If you're going to use EMG's then the wood grain quality isn't as importent as it is for passive pups. If you are bent on Gibson then I may not be able to help you, because they sound better with passive pups; but an Epiphone V with EMGs works very well. It will sound like a gibson with EMG's. Some Epiphone's even sound better than some Gibsons, but thats a hit or miss so try lots of Epiphone V guitars, of the same model you want, until you find that special one. The only real problem with Epiphone is the hardware and electronics used on the guitars, the wood and construction are very similar to Gibson and not that bad. Since you are going to replace the pups with EMG's then focus on how well the guitar feels when you play it and inspect it very closely before you buy it and really look hard, because Epiphone lets some guitars with defects out to be sold. This is because their quality control isn't very good in Asia factories, but once in a while, a really good guitar is built by them out of pure chance. Now go find it, make it yours, put some EMG's in it, replace a few generic parts, and enjoy. I would suggest the Gothic V, because they seem built well, play well, look cool, and have better than normal sustain for an Epiphone.

They either extend the neck, and adjust the scale to deal with thsi problem. Or extend the finder board (cheap ass way... ibanez does it) with the ibanez method you have to mvoe the neck pickup closer to the bridge.

Yngwie's sound/style/technique/etc does not appeal to me at all. I think his tone is shit so I can't exactly give him props for using a fender strat.
So I was just disagreeing with the "he seems to do just fine" part.

I hate SRV's tone and hendrix. Iron Maiden's is good cause if I'm not mistaken, they use active pickups. I hate their solos though. And btw, they don't only use strats.
I'm not arguing with anyone here cause thats a waste of my time. All I said was that Gibsons do not have enough frets. I play solos where theres a full step bend on the 24th and that cannot be accomplished too easily on a 22 fret gibson. And it has a different sound if you bend to get to another note. I'm not saying they suck and no one should use them...Cannibal Corpse do just fine with them. But I dislike them. So eat a dildo. And stuff.

That dosent mean he cant play on a 21 fret guitar... though he does bend the 21st fret like 4000 times a song
