Increasing Down Picking Speed?
im currently learning a few death metal songs and the trouble is my down pick/palm muting is too slow to keep up with the fast tempos, u guys got any tips or runs to help me out?

Get a metronome and play the song in a tempo that you can hang on to and then gradually speed up when you can play it smooth.

try tremolo picking if their single notes played fast.

Yeah thats waht iv been doing but that aint how they do it, i wanna play the song properly, suppose to stricly use down strokes when palm muting, its a Decapitated song BTW

i can relate to your suffering.
it took me over a year to get "slaughter of the soul" and "cold" by at the gates, hahahaha.
i have a mate who has really small hands but is the best guitarist in the school probably, he bounces his wrist for triplets and downpicking riffs.
i try learning different songs with similar riffs first. eg, with ATG i was able to play "the swarm" before progressing onto "slaughter of the soul" which after that, i was able to get the slightly more techincal and co-ordinated "cold".
my point is try learning something you can play first then progress on to the stuff you want. its frustrating and boring but, practice makes perfect.

for long strings of open palm mute it is easy to just do tremelo picking. For all the others its just practice, practice, practice. Once you've built up your initial palm muting skills you can easily gain them back if you've stopped using them. I went a few months without any real hardcore palm muting and I just started doing it again last week and I'm wicked fast.

DOWNPICKING
Dead Embryonic Cells by Sepultura.
It's really quite fast on the CD, and the down strokes are quite vicious. I really have to be careful to warm up my right hand or I can start to hurt. It's hard for me to play them that fast (and some of Hetfield's stuff is also evil) while staying relaxed.
Thing is, you can't just alternate pick. I can't alternate pick slow enough and down up down up doesn't have the same sound as down down down down at a million miles per hour.
I guess it just takes practise.
I can do it fine live, I guess I'm just more pumped after half an hour of thrash (We always play it last), but I always struggle at home playing to the CD.

Yes, just keep on practicing. After awhile your right wrist will get used to it and get stronger so it will be easier.

Try trem. picking and then just don't do ups. Or if you're doing a song like Symbolic, who cares if it is down or up?
