it is hard to come up with melodic metal...try fooling around with riffs and power chords in D standard tuning concentrating on 4ths

I ain't too good at this kinda shit, but I think I disagree with the 4ths thing. I've been trying to do melodic shit lately, and whenever I do a lot of 4ths it seems to come out sounding like it's in pentatonic minor, which makes it sound too old school for my taste.
But maybe that's just me.

listen to bands for inspiration. as has been said before just try fooling around, but i listen to bands for inspiration.
amon amarth is definitely a top band to hear for melodic death, or if you want some thrashy melodeath, listen to early soilwork.

listen to dark tranquility, early in flames, amon amarth, soilwork, and shit like that, and really learn how to use the minor scales, especially natural and melodic minor.
