Best riff
This is probably a hard question and the thread has also probably been thought of before but, what is people's favourte guitar riff of all time? something really brutal, or soft, or catchy whatever, just something that sticks in your mind.
For me, the one that does it is the second riff (the one that starts at 0:25) of "Deliverance" by Opeth.
\m/ fuckin brutal

maybe the opening of One by Metallica or maybe Iron Man by Black Sabbath the main riff.
Solo it would be the 1st electirc solo on One by Metallica or an Elvenking solo on the song Disappearing Sands

I love many riffs but the best is the guitar solo of Sodom - My Atonement.
also the last riff of Kataklysm - Maelström.

Right now it would have to be the intro to Judas Priest's Electric Eye.

I really like the acoustic parts of 'Unas Slayer of the Gods' By Nile.
The first 25 seconds of 'Serpent Headed Mask' By Nile has some cool riffs aswell.
'Sarcophagous' by who else, Nile, Has some awesome riffs in it. The main riff is the best.
And 'Execration Text' By NILE has the coolest little riff about 15 seconds in.
'Frantic Disembowelment' By Cannibal Corpse has some of the best riffs in it too.
I'm going through a NILE FUCKING KICKS ASS phase.

There are proabably too many great riffs to have a best and it was near impossible to narrow off a list of favourites but who gives a fuck?
Pig Destroyer - Naked Trees (all of them)
Pig Destroyer - Mapplethorpe Grey (0:34)
Carcass - Corporal Jigsore Quandary (4:02)
Opeth - Face Of Melinda (4:38)
Opeth - The Leper Affinity (pretty much all of them)
Opeth - Bleak (0:20)

The whole of Execration Text is chock-full of amazing riffs. Definitely, along with Chapter For Transforming Into A Snake, one of the best Nile songs to play.

One of my favourite riffs of all time is the intro to Davidian by Machine Head. Also the intro to Maze Of Torment and the middle bits to Chapel Of Ghouls both by Morbid Angel are awesome.

damn man,
You'd need a "greatest pantera riff" thread.
Cowboys from hell
cemetary gates
domination
the art of shedding
mouth for war
a new level
this love
regular people (conceit)
hollow
strength beyond strength
becoming
5 minutes alone
i'm broken
slaughtered
shedding skin
throes of rejection
The great southern trendkill
War Nerve
13 Steps to Nowhere
Living through me (hell's Wrath)
Floods
The Underground in America
Goddamn Electric
Revolution is my Name
Yesterday don't mean shit
(the badge is a cover)

well here's some of my favourite riffs:
Slayer - Silent Scream
Slayer - The Anti-christ
Metallica - Seek And Destroy
Metallica - Blackened
Metallica - Jump In The Fire
Children Of Bodom - Children Of Bodom
Diablo - (well basicly every riff!)
Killswitch Engage - Rose Of Sharyn
Kreator - System Decay
KoRn - Here To Stay
The Wake - Darkness Of Mine
Liquid Tension Experiment - Paradigm Shift
Opeth - Blackwater Park
RATM - Bombtrack
Slipknot - My Plague
The Haunted - Shithead
huh... quite a list. Of course, that ain't all (raining blood etc.) ...
These are pretty basic riffs, but sound so great...

Torn Into Enthrallment, the first riffs are so good, then the:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------4---------------4---------------4-------------5-4--
---------------4---------------4---------------4-------------5-4--
---------------2---------------2---------------2----------5--3-2--
--111-444-333---111-444-333-----111-444-333---111-444-3-------
There are so few Suffocation riffs that I DON'T like.

ya that solo rocks but he didnt write it, it is a hendrix solo. my favorite riff is probobly the interlude from angel of death by slayer. "Pumped with fluid, inside your brain. Pressure in your skull begins pushing through your eyes"
Favorite solo would either be Ride the Lightning by Metallica or Everytime I Die by Children of Bodom. he bleeds the solo into a keyboard solo and it kicks so much ass.

My all time favorite riff is the outro riff of Suffocation's "Ornaments of Decrepancy".
Also, various riffs in-
Malevolent Creation- Premature Burial
Monstrosity- Fatal Millenium
Atheist- Piece of Time
Watchtower- Instruments of Random Murder
Suffocation- Well, any song by Suffocation

I had no idea Jehovas Witnesses had the power to influence bands like Death, Atheist, Cynic, Pantera, etc.

Uh.........
I didn't feel like reading this long list, so did anyone mention Raining Blood by Slayer? That intro riff rules. It was the first Slayer (or death/thrash metal) song I ever heard. It's special to me.
