D. But I keep it in normal because my guitar teacher will have a fit.
I use my RP7 to de-tune it to D, though. But take it from me, you will fuck up your guitar if you are constantly chaning tunings. Pick one and stay with it.

Standard, D, and B. I use B for the sole reason that my band uses B and also when I am tabbing out songs from Amon Amarth, that is mostly their tuning.

standard, on both my 6 and 7 string guitars, its easier for playing with other people, since standard is the standard, plus its alot clearer sounding than with drop tunings.

I personally like standard c and standard e tuning. I like C because I wanted to test out why all these bands were playing in it and that it is still clear and heavy at the same time. I like E because of lots of bands playing in it and I've really liked the sound I'm getting with it currently.

Eb, C#, and B. I have 3 guitars so it's easy.
EDIT: In standard intervals, I hate drop tuning.

I play in standard E, ive tried all sorts of tunings , C#, drop B, drop C, Eb and i figured that its best to learn stuff in standard E tuning before you start exploring other tunings.

I play in D tuning because I like the way it sounds. A good balance between heaviness and tightness of strings.
A lot of bands make really lame use of drop tunings, but it can sound really cool. I think a lot of Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power is in drop D, and sounds heavy as fuck.

go buy a Korg Chromatic Tuner CA-30. It can pick up any note so you can easily tune to C. I believe they are like 30 bucks but they are well worth the purchase.

I find with Eb you can use a 'pack 'o tens' and its not too tight. Plus i play along to slayer CDs alot.

I tune by ear these days. Tune it to a song on a CD, or if your guitar is in standard, tune your bottom E to C using the C on 3rd fret A-sting as an octave higher comparison. (if that makes sense)
Or buy a tuner that tells you what note your playing...

On my main guitar, I tune to Eb.
Recently, I've been getting more and more into Nile so I set my Jackson up it to Drop A.

Don't change your tunings too often, it will fuck up the neck of your guitar. It happened to me, and now I have to spend some $$$ to get it corrected again.

My band changes tuning a lot. I play a 6-string but the other guitarist uses a 7-string (though he rarely uses it) so I play in standard, drop-D, drop-C, and drop-B. A lot of guys i've noticed shit all over those who use drop tunings and say we have no talent. Well, one of the beauties of playing guitar is there are many ways to play one thing. If one way is easier, I'm gonna use it. My wrists are more important than there minds.

Back last summer, I used C# tuning, and every now and then Dropped it. Then I went to standard, which I liked, and then I got an idea... What would happen if I got a 7 string set, and put the lowest ones on my ESP? Now, I'm rather happy with my ESP and the whole B,E,A,D,F#,B tuning... That's Baritone, is it not? correct me if I'm wrong.

yeah, baritone isnt so much the tuning, but the guitar, baritones have longer scale lengths, but there are bands that use baritones for tuning to C standard, C# standard, A standard, but yes, B is the typical baritone tuning.

I use D on 2 six strings, E on a six string, a standard tuned 7-string, and I tune my 5-string to A. Just depends on the song!!

Eb
But if I was gonna change anytime soon, it'd probably be to D.
Drop tunings a pretty weak in my opinion...I can't see the point at all. Sure it may make some chords easier to play, butif they are to hard in the first place then you probably have to get better at guitar!
I dislike 'trends' in tuning too...bands who'd play in Drop D when it was cool, (you remember, when EVERYONE was doing, like when Pantera ruled the earth) and now a lot of NWOAHM bands won't pick up an axe unless it's below C.
I play in Eb cos I like the slightly darker sound it gives as opposed to standard tuning, yet it's not muddy and is good for high gain evil thrash.
(and yeh, I used to learn a lot of Slayer...)

Not necessarily, just consider the intro barage of Churning The Maelstrom by Nile to see what I mean. It's damn near impossible to play without drop tuning and one could certainly not consider either Karl or Dallas to be in need of more practise!

Don't forget Psycroptic!
I really don't understand how anyone can equate drop tuning with a lack of talent. What's the point in struggling with a fast sequence of chords (like the aforementioned intro to Churning The Maelstrom) when you can play it with ease by drop tuning? In my eyes, that's being smart not talentless.

Using Drop tuning isn't exactly talentless, only when a band is in drop tuning and they only play like 3 chords over and over again, no solos are anything. You really are talentless then.

GOD DAMN!! That's cool, variety is important. Random thought, does anyone here use open tunings? I thought that might be kinda funny.

i actually have used open tunings to write metal tunes, open D minor(DADADF, i think) , DADGAD is kinda open, i have used that for some celtic shit, open D modal, cant remember what that on is tuned to, but i remember the name.
opeth is working with some odd open tunings for their upcoming album

Shit I did forget Death. But I didn't say Nile was THE only band that makes good use of drop tuning, I meant one of few that do. Death included in that.

Nile uses Drop A tunning.
I mostly prefer either B or D tunning.

I change tunings a lot actually on my guitar...it often depends on the mood of the song I am writing.
It varies from C , A and even G sometimes...but then again that's only for the funeral songs

are you talking about drop tuning as in D A D G B E (or some variation of that), as death didn't drop tune, it was in D (D G C F A D) (which is 1 step down)
the way i see it there is nothing wrong with drop tuning, as you can get stuff out faster, as well as it being alot easier if you are doing vocals or whatever at the same time, just so long as you arent slack and all your songs are in 100Bpm and look like this:
Code:
-0-0-0-0-1-1-1-1-4-4-4-4-5-5-------
-0-0-0-0-1-1-1-1-4-4-4-4-5-5-------
-0-0-0-0-1-1-1-1-4-4-4-4-5-5-5-----
harmonic^
and the chorus is just that backwards with distortion on

AHEM... "nu-metal"
i use drop D, one step down (C G C F A D) just because a lot of my favorite bands use it, and my band uses it. my favorite, however, is C standard, and if it were my choice, my band would use it.

1. that is drop C
2. Psycroptic tune to drop D, and they are by no means nu metal

Exactly! It also opens up a whole new range of possibilities for strange sounding chords that could previously not be reached without having an extra finger.

I agree with that but like what I said before, it doesnt take much to do a couple of drop power chords. So unless you put drop tuning to good use then I think its pointless.

C, C#, B and Standard.
C because I use it to play old In Flames and new Arch Enemy
C# for Dark Tranquillity (The Minds I onwards)
B because i can play Carcass and old Arch Enemy in it
Standard for Maiden/old Tallica

the correct way to put it is drop D, one step down. and as for the psycroptic thing u said, im not saying all band that tune to drop D are nu metal, im talking about what CannibalCorpse said about bands that play like 3 dropped power chords with no solos or anything, that is basically what nu metal does

so is D tuning correctly said Standard tuning, 1 step down
B tuning must be Standard tuning, 2.5 steps down
how many times has the latter notation been used in this thread?

dude, I can play the intro to Disasterpieces and i dont even consider myself a good player. their stuff is easy as hell, cept the solos on Volume 3, which arent even good solos. they're just fast for the sake of being fast. and yea i tried Zakk's tuning once, its lame as hell. i dont get why he uses it, but he makes it work good so whatever.

Right now, I just retuned my Ibanez Ex back to B after being tuned to G# for a while. And my Ibanez rg120 is currently tuned at an E flat and still toying around with Deicide material. As far as the B tuning for now, I'll be dealing with bands such as :Exhumed, Internal Suffering, Kataklysm, and whoever else that may be at that tuning.

My 6 Favs (low to high)
1.) B,E,A,D,F#,B-Cause I love to grind. (Exhumed, Impaled, Gorgasm, Aborted, Skinless ect.) and cause it is the tunning that I am most comfortable with.
2.) D,G,C,F,A,D-Just to play alot of Cradle of Filth and Children of Bodom songs and it has a really heavy feel to it.
3.) (Bb),Eb,Ab,Db,Gb,Bb,Eb-I don't know why I just like it.
4.) A,E,A,D,F#,B -To cover Nile.
5.) C,G,C,F,A,D-To cover Rob Zombie or Strapping Young Lad or New Cradle of Filth.
6.) A,D,G,C,E,A-For Mortician, Malignancy and The Berzerker.

You tune the same way. Nothing else to adjust. Bb to Bb without the seventh..Eb. Simple as that. If your having problems...I'm assuming if you don't have a guitar tuner, your kind of in bad shape, but anyhow, tune your sixth string to Bb like normal. Then Hit the 5th fret on the 6th string and the open Eb string(5th string) together and tune the 5th string to that. Do the same for the Fourth string, and 3rd string. When you get to the second string. Hit the 4th fret on the 3rd string and strike the open 2nd string to get the tuning of the 2nd string. Finally at last, you can hit the 5th fret of the 2nd string and strike the open 1rst to get that Bb tuning on that string. Any more questions and whatever, let me know.

for the sake of clarity i have tuned to c# recently. of course i play primarily extreme death metal so a low low tuning makes everything pretty much mush. i wish to hell nile would tune up to c or c#. in my opinion tuning down to B gives no particular increase in heaviness. i mean hate eternal tunes to D and they are one of the heaviest bands ive ever heard. origin and decapitated tune to C (i think, i dont have a stereo in my room at the moment) and they are heavy as well. im pretty sure arch enemy tuned to B on stigmata and burning bridges, which is pretty fucking impressive in my opinion. of course they arent chugging constant 16ths on those albums either, its more like retro guitar hero stuff.

Origin tune to B. And Hate Eternal tuned to Bb on their latest album....and probably on the upcoming one as well.

I tune to standard and sometimes change to drop D, it doesn't fuck up the neck to change between standard and drop D does it?
