"you at your sista's house now your sista's life's in danga"
"ah FUCK, chuck's on a killin' spree again"

These ideas are nightmares for white parents, whose worst fear is a child with dyed hair and who likes earrings/Like whatever they say has no bearing, it's so scary in a house that allows no swearing/to see him walking around with his headphones blaring, alone in his own zone, cold and he don't care/He's a problem child, and what bothers him all comes out, when he talks about, his fuckin' dad walkin' out/cuz he just hates him so bad that he blocks him out. If he ever saw him again he'd probably knock him out/His thoughts are wacked, he's mad so he's talkin' back, talkin' black, brainwashed from rock and rap/He sags his pants, do-rags and a stocking cap, his step-father hit him, so he socked him back/and broke his nose, his house is a broken home. There's no control, he just let's his emotions go...

So to the parents of America / I am the derringer aimed at little Erica, to attack her character / The ringleader of this circus of worthless pawns / Sent to lead the march right up to the steps of Congress / And piss on the lawns of the White House and replace it with a Parental Advisory sticker / To spit liquor in the faces of in this democracy of hypocrisy / Fuck you Ms. Cheney! Fuck you Tipper Gore! Fuck you with the freest of speech this divided states of embarassment will allow me to have, Fuck you

You've got a fucking catheter in your brain
Pissing your common sense away
When you draw first blood you can't stop this fight
For my own peace of mind - I'm going to
Tear your fucking eyes out
Rip your fucking flesh off
Beat you till you're just a fucking lifeless carcass
Fuck you and your progress
Watch me fucking regress
You were made to take the fall - now you're nothing
Payback's a bitch motherfucker

well exactly.
But "most" people get into metal, because of the aggression (i've found)
Hip-hop is just as aggressive
I find hip hop is attacked because
"it takes no talent"
"there's no guitar"
etc.
But if you've ever tried to work a fucking dj machine, you need rythm for that. It's fucking impossible.
Or to rap, i know many don't like rapping (yet you love screaming) But it's actually hard to freestyle.

Agreed, I have tried to mix with turntables - its fucking hard - as it scratching.
There are alot of very talented DJs about.
As for rapping, I don't think I could do it - but I don't try cos I would make a tit of myself.

There are sub-genres of rap - you're talking about gansta rap, which I think is shit too, but there is some good rap music (J5)

Aw, go for the real thang. Check out the original by the Watts 103rd Street Band. I had the 45. Great tune.
"Some people have everything , but other people don't.
But everything don't mean a thing if a thing's the thing you want .
Express yourself. "
Ohio Players, Temptations, 4 Tops, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Taj Mahal, Ry Cooder, Joe Walsh (James Gang), Heart, Carole King, Average White Band, Steely Dan, Seales and Crofts, Barnaby Bye, The Band, Billy Joel, Van Morrison, Paul Weller, Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Supremes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Spike Jones and the City Slickers, Harry Nillson, Neil Young, Dr. Teeth and the Medicine Show,Shane McGowan and the Pogues, The Proclaimers, The Chieftains, Donovan
Just to name a few diverse from metal. And for rap /hip-hop I personally like the Gospel Gangstas. One of their songs "Whatcha Gonna Do" has the most perfect soul vocal arpeggio in it I've ever heard. I love it. It ain't bullshit rap. It's got some soul and reality in it only without the 'bad language'. And some of Alicia Keyes stuff ain't bad either.
"Ahhh do it ! Ahh do it ! Do it to it." --now I've got "Express Yourself" stuck into my head !!

Yes but some rappers can actually sing really well.
I was comparing it to metal. How some metal bands just scream their heads off. The way some rappers rap is rythm in itself.
It seems I'm not going to change any minds because most of you have already formed your opinions and are gonna stick by them.
It may not be your musical preference, but writing it off as "easy" is just not true.

Oh your God, don't tell me you think Atreyu is "Nu-Metal." They're Metalcore! And I think I've heard Thrice once or twice, and if they are who I think they are, they're Emo. Jesus Fuckin' Christ!
Plus I hate Billy Corgan's voice, nice song writer, horrible voice.

The only kind of cds I own are metal and classical.
Its kind of hard for me to reply to this since I dont know of any specific bands who arnt metal that I would consider "favorite". I guess the only real input i can make here is that I like classical and maybe some of the older punk. I also found "new age" to be pretty interesting most times i listen to that channel.
It was asked earlier in the thread if time is actually taken to buy these non-metal bands being called favorite... Like i said i only own metal and classical, but i think i would spend money on new age if I found a specific artist who was really appealing.
I just remembered an artist I found who plays celtic "fantasy" music. I loved his music. Maybe some people here have heard him... Bjorn lynne. http://www.lynnemusic.com/returntowitchwood.html
there are some samples there for anybody who wants to hear it. I would buy his stuff but ive never got around to it.
...and i think smashing pumpkins are *good.

It may not be your musical preference, but writing it off as "easy" is just not true.

My list would be incredibly long, so I'll sum up.
Most of the classic rock bands that you've already heard of, my absolute favorites being Rush (early stuff is arguably metal), The Who, Bad Company, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Van Halen, and Boston. I consider Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple metal, so they don't qualify.
Most of the 'grunge' scene of the early-mid 90's, and I have a constant hardon for Soundgarden and AIC especially.
A lot of varied, late 80's to mid 90's alt-rock... Extreme, Janes Addiction, old RHCP, REM, Beck, Presidents of the USA (Dune Buggy!), Smashing Pumpkins, Blind Melon, etc.
The small, talented and/or innovative percentage of late 80's to late 90's rappers. I haven't listened to much of this in the past 6 months or so, but I go on stretches where I will listen to it about 20% of the time I'm listening to music, sometimes more.
Ice-T, NWA (and all former prominent members), Public Enemy, Ice Cube (deserves a second mention), Wu-Tang Clan, KRS-1/BDP, Onyx, Eric B & Rakim. I really can't stand the new stuff; even if the rapper is supremely talented, the new-style, computerized beats grate on my nerves.

It's cool to hear about other people with broad taste here
I LOVE good movie scores
American Beauty - Thomas Newman
Spirited Away - Joe Hisaishi
Pan's Labyrinth - Javier Navarette
Brick - Nathan Johnson
Shine - David Hirschfelder
Léon - Eric Serra
Children Of Men - John Tavener
The Thin Red Line - Hans Zimmer
Princess Mononoke -Joe Hisaishi
Glory - James Horner
Donnie Darko - Michael Andrews
Those are all worth checking out
Anyone else have really specific obsessions like this?

i know you weren't directing that towards me... but its really not that different from some of the metal i listen to. to name a VERY obvious suggestion, check Summoning. the quote in my sig is from them. id recommend anything from Stronghold or Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame.

I've actually studied Musicology at the Utrecht University for about half a year. It was terribly interesting but the subject matter was way to theoretical and grey if you catch my drift. It teaches you extremely thourough in the works of the entire Western music history, from gregorian mass chants to Ciconia, Ockeghem, Bach & Beethoven to Stravinsky & Phillip Glass.
Interesting music to say the least.

You'll find this chord progression in his other scores, too. Especially near the end of Blood Diamond.

I'll check that out.
Also, about the classical music. A very very strong YES. I am currently majoring in Classical Guitar Performance, although I am switching over to the Media Composition program.
Check out Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto
Also, Sheherazade (Rimsky-Korsakov) is fucking magical. That piece should blow classical lovers away.
As well as Ma Mére L'Oye, by Maurice Ravel ( strongly recommended).
Doctor, I'm currently taking a Music History (Style/Lit of Western Music) class. I bet I am learning similar subjects to yours.

Rachmaninoff is hard shit. I can play prelude in c# minor on the piano, the fast parts are sometimes sloppy though. Took me a while to learn.

shit, I bet so!
Does anybody else like Video Game scores, too?
Bioshock is great, and Silent Hill 2. In fact, for the movie Silent Hill, they just used the music from the games
The score for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is honestly as good as any full length movie score... it's unbelievable.
I also have recordings of "The Hyrule Orchestra" where they re-recorded music from the Zelda Games. You get to find out how much of a genius Koji Kondo really is. I even like the MIDI music alone

Yeah, but only old ones for me. I just don't play that many new games except for sports and the occasional fighter.
I happen to love old Sonic, Super Mario Bros. & World, Donkey Kong Country, SF, and Killer Instinct music. My favorites were always SMB3, Sonic 2, and the first three MK games, especially the second. I will actually listen to all of those on midi and occasionally rip wave files of me playing so I can listen later.

I never really got the rolling stones. Once my friend played them in the car for a solid hour, and I had a TERRIBLE headache afterward. My ears jut really really refuse their music.
Does anybody else here think that most of the time the people you get along with best are the people that like the same music as you? It's hard for me to fully enjoy being around somebody if I know that they don't like my favorite music, because that usually means they have a very different personality/behavior.

Nah. most of my friends aren't into death metal at all. Actually i've found that most people that i've met that do like death metal aren't the kind of people i really want to hang out with. they're usually just weird haha. Not sayin that's any of you guys, but that's just personal experience out in the real world, not the metaltab world haha

Yes, for hardcore metalheads I can agree with you. I mainly listen to Tool, Opeth, Metallica, Pantera, or Mastodon when it comes to metal. I really never liked the "classic" stuff, or the new "ARGHBLTHEEJHKGAAAAHHHHH" stuff.
A lot of them are convinced they know absolutely everything about everything, too. So yea, I suppose I am mainly referring to music that you REALLY love.
btw I'm listening to this right now, and it's awesome: FF VII
