Bodom, Power metal? You must be thinking of someone else maybe...
Metal Church is my favorite Power Metal band. Gravedigger is pretty good, too. Running Wild is good too, but more thrash than Power.

If anybody gives me a definition of what 'power' metal is, or for that matter, a definition of ANY sub-genrè from ANY genrè of music then you can fuck my arse. Till then shut the fuck up with the "Oh I don't consider this to be power/death/speed/etc metal" bullshit.
Fuck you all.

Power Metal - Softer metal generaly power chords standard tuning and not MUCH distortion, usually lots of solos, regular or high pitched girly singing, usually about D&D style themes (i.e. fighting for glory, dragons, etc.)
take that bitch

No, it's not. I'd say black/death.
Also, most power metal sucks. It's hard to find power metal that isn't tacky. Some is good though. I wouldn't say it's a fool-proof way to go though.

where i'm from(u.s.) some bands that are considered "power metal"-ish include, shadows fall, unearth, clifton, avenged sevenfold( ),himsa, glass casket... ect.
a little hardcore, with a strong death/black metal influence... even venturing into the classic rock n' roll/hair metal realm. screams, growls, singing, shouting... it's like a mix of so many great styles.
anyways i think it's a great new trend... beats the hell out of nu metal.

Blind Guardian owns. I enjoy a variety of power metal, and as to girly voices, I agree but It adds to the music, and they really arent all power chords but I grew up to it.

power metal as we know today (the chorus with choirs, the dragons, warriors and knights, etc) began with Manowar, back in the early 80's.
then it evolved into the epicness we see today, being Rhapsody its maximum representative.
Thy Majestie is also great, Gamma Ray, Angra, Dragonforce (gnomes on crack), Edguy, Iced earth, etc.

as far as genras go, i dont want to get into that any more, we all have a general idea as to hat each genera entails, and examples are the best way to demonstrate this, dont push it, please

Ok, no. Im from america too you douche. And only fags who dont know shit about what metal is start called all those gay hardcore shit bands power metal. I do not know a single person dumb enough to call shadows fall metal, or even to compare them to the greatness of Iron Maiden of Iced Earth.
EDIT: consider shadows fall POWER metal

in america the term power metal is a genre given to bands with strong influence of a mixture of hardcore,black/death metal, metalcore, thrash metal, hair metal, and classic rock n' roll... i wasnt trying to spark up arguements about sub genres.....
but yeh, does anybody here dig clifton? i just saw them the other night with cephalic carnage, uphill battle, and exhumed...... it was a good show(except i don't really like exhumed).

I agree, however I think it's come to a totally ludicrous point. It's no longer two sub-genrès that are vastly different. Just for example let's say...Hardcore and Death Metal, and I'll take Hatebreed as being a hardcore band and Nile as a death metal band (just for argument's sake - don't bitch at me that Hatebreed isn't hardcore or whatever, just live with it for a moment).
Right. Now if you listen to the majority of Hatebreed's song and compare it to Nile's songs, you can tell they're extremely different. Vocals are not that similiar, pace and aggression are unique to each style. In this case I think it's perfectly suitable to say "Well there's two clear sub-genrès here, because they differ so much", and not only can you say that, but you can also give reasons why (as stated above).
My problem rests with the fact that there are frivolous amounts of sub-genrès today that are not too different from another. Metal examples escape me at the moment, however I can think of one in another genrè that irks me. A friend tried to explain to me the differences between SKA and punk once, and in the end I came to the conclusion; and told him this as well; "So SKA is pretty much just punk with added brass, right?". That was a statement he agreed with.
What warranted a new sub-genrè of music? It was the addition of one set of instruments. By this token, I could take a standard rock band, add a flute and a clarinet and have just created a whole new genrè of music called "Woodrock" (or something as equally stupid).
That is where my argument lies. It isn't against sub-genrès, but it is definitely against having too many of them within one style (or meaningless ones that could be easily assimilated into other groups).

I think they're pretty cool. Wouldn't buy a CD, but if they were playing in town I would probably go and see them.
Quickly going back to genres, I have very little idea of what these genres are. I think it's just got out of hand and I havent bothered to keep up. I agree with Psycho

Along with what Psycho said, it does get out of hand but not by too much. The way people play the riffs, the distortion, the vocals, everything comes into play. I figure if you have to explain, I dont see why you shouldnt to give people a more better understanding of exactly the type you listen to. Or if you like them all just I love metal.

I dont listen to power metal to much, because the cheesyness and girly voices turn me a bit off. At the local metal pub, about 50% of the metal thats put on is power metal. Altough I have to say its great music to get drunk on.

I rather dislike power metal. The only thing that I like that comes close to power metal is Eric Hawk. I don't remember what band he's in but he did some vocals on Gardenian's Soulburner album.

i'm not big in power metal either, its 2 damn weak sounding for me....the guitars do kick ass in it though. Have you all read the article The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists in March 2004 Guitar World? Even they considered fuckin COB power metal...Genre's get all confusing and shit sometimes...
