Right now, i have a 81/85 combo on an ESP Ltd Viper-100. but i'm planning to get a 60 for the neck. But i don't know whether to put the 81 or the 85 in the bridge. What do you think, and why?

Yes there is. You put the higher end pickup (the more treble-y pickup) in the bridge, and the lower end pickup in the neck.

Pickups produce different sounds depending on where they are played.

85's are made for the bridge too. Many people have 85/81 combo, but 81/85 combo is more popular simply coz thats how zakk wylde has em.

Negitive bro! I have always used 85/81 sets, because imo they sound the best. Remember back in the day when everyone thought 81/81 sets were the shit? Well I didn't so I like to think that Zakk took my ideal set up.

lol. well how do cleans sound with the 81 in the neck? I like the 85 clean sound in the neck, but its bit too bassy when using distortion. So mayb if i switch my 81/85 to 85/81, it might even things up.

I have heard that some people like an 85 bridge/81 neck. I have never done this so sorry to have confused you if you thought that is what I use.

What position comes first and last when people use ??/?? format to descibe EMG's. I have always assumed 81's were bridge pups no matter what.

the bridge pickup usually goes at the front. so 81 bridge and 60 neck would be 81/60.

the 81's were designed for the bridge, but lotsa ppl use it at the neck too. like Kirk hammett.

85 in the bridge sounds like poo? WTF? Have you tried it or even heard it? I switched my 85 to the bridge (only takes a few minutes) and it sounds totally better. I'm using a Jackson Rhoads Performer, 5150 2x12 w/ JJ tubes and and MT2. The 85 in the bridge gives a hell of a lot more mid range sound. The 81 is too trebly. Actually, I think it sounds better at the neck than the 85 did. With the 85 at the Bridge, I can use the guitar without even switching positions. The 85 is very versatile.


85 at the neck only?

i think 85's sound great in bridge position, they were made for going either way. they have a thicker tone with less treble and more bass then the 81 so alot of people prefer them in the neck position. the 85 sound has more treble in the bridge than in the neck simply because of the location, it just has a fatter sound to it.
60's beat the hell out of 85's in neck position for cleans imo. but the 81 or 85 in the brigde just depends on what sound you want.

i just switched my 85 to the bridge and 81 to neck today. and it blooody screeeeeams!!!! I love the extra bass from the 85. The bass was too much for the neck, and made it muddy, but at the bridge, it just fking rocks. and the 81 is a pretty awesome pup for the neck. only bad thing is that the 85 has better cleans. but the 81's cleans are still decent. so i dont' mind.
