Well, it's a very well-made point, but I've got a few problems with it. America (and Britain) are not the world police force - we cannot go around exacting regime change because we feel like it. We were told by our respective administrations that we initiated this war because Iraq posed an immediate threat to Western countries with an arsenal of WMD. Before we even went in to Iraq the UN's chief weapons inspector (Hans Blix) said that it was highly unlikely that Iraq had any WMD. 400+ days later and we've all but given up the search.

I don't believe for one second that the CIA and MI5/6 would get something like this completely and utterly wrong. WMD was the smokescreen that politicians were willing to hijack to cover ulteria motives. Bush's main motive was that he believed Saddam Hussein had a part in the 9/11 atrocities. I heard many independent analysts in the lead up to the war comment that Saddam Hussein detested Al-Qaeda. Read into that what you may. But either way Bush couldn't lose - an offshoot from 'conquering' Iraq was that he'd install a Western approved leader and extract cheap oil anyway. Plus he had already lined up the construction contracts for American firms therefore ensuring more money for American business and, more selfishly, the votes of corporate America in the next election. Cash and votes for lives: if that isn't exploitation, then I don't know what is.

You also say that France, Germany, etc supported genocide by standing back and allowing it to happen while exploiting the country by 'pumping the blood of innocents' into their cars. Very well, yes, maybe they did. But America is not whiter than white in this. America and Britain supported Saddam during these periods of mass genocide by supplying him with the weapons with which he carried out those acts and by imposing the very same economic sanctions that you speak of (by voting for them as part of the UN). So don't come hollier than thou and say that America was disapproving of the rest of the world in it's treatment of Iraq. America also funded the Taliban and Osama bin Laden so it hasn't exactly got the best record for counteracting terrorism in other countries. As soon as they turn on America it's a different story.

The whole situation stinks and all I know is that our respective governments have lead our troops to fight and die in a war under false pretenses. At worst our governments have lied to us and at best they've shown crass stupidity in readily believing unsubstantiated intelligence (that's if you consider a university student's PhD thesis from 12 years ago to be intelligence). Those are the actions I'd expect of someone like Saddam Hussein and the very fact that we are 'the good guys' and 'the victors' means that those in power will get away with it.

The misconception is that he did say things like Al Qaida is operating in Iraq, and that is in fact true, but they weren't operating in cooperation with the government. In Saudi Arabia that might be a different story, and that's a more touchy subject.

So, did he speak the truth in a way to mislead? Perhaps, but was the misleading intentional or was it lack of comprehension of what was actually being said by the masses? I tend to think of it as the latter.

I just pointed out that when we've had enough, and we decide to finally do the right thing and our allies aren't ready to give up the shiny, red, bloody ball then there are strong feelings of resentment. I think that at this stage in world politics this is very apparent.
