fretting > picking

Alright I have a kind of problem.. So if anyone can give me some tips?

When I (try to) play solo's or solo-like licks, I seem to be able to follow with my fretting hand, but not with my picking hand.

F.e.

-------14----17-15-14----------------15-14-------
-15-17----15----------17-14-15-17-14-------17-15-
-------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------

stuff like that, I heard from some good players you need to pîck every note (when played at high speed of course) but I can't seem to make that (although my fretting hand is able to play it faster).

Any exercices or hints?
Thanks

if youre having a problem the advice will always be to play it slow and break it up into chunks, no matter how small the part already is

Yes I know but I can play stuff 'slow' to moderate speed with no problem actually...

the thing is that, when I speed up, my picking & fretting are not simultaneously anymore.. If you understand what I mean.

Play with a metronome, step it up a couple bps every day. Don't bump it until you can play it perfect though. Eventually you WILL speed up.

Yeah, try that. It sounds like you're trying to increase your speed too quickly. Using a metronome will help you do it gradually.

Hey now, no hostilities, he asked a valid question about how he should practice.

Try alternate picking, thats what I do when I do fast solo's(that arent sweeps).

practice...go slow and slowly speed up. break it up into sections like if there are a lot of hammers ons and offs break that up from the single picking.

by the looks of that you do have to puck every note anyway, i have appended it with h's and p's and you can hammer on/pull off on those notes instead of picking them, it will definately sound different, but it would be faster

it may not help, but it is an alternative

Yeah at first I learned it with hammer/pull but I have fucking thin strings + it did not sound as full and tight so I try with picking. Anyway on thinner stringers I always had more difficulty picking fast than on thicker ones.

practise little bits, like 3 notes at a time, at full pace. eventually expand this to 4 notes, 5 notes etc

and if this fails, just do what everyone else says and try picking slowly then getting faster.

This is just avoiding something he will have to learn anyways. You have to be able to coordinate your picking and fretting hand anyways so just practise that a whole lot. There is a hard picking/ fretting part in a cacophony song and my god its weird but its also a great thing to learn so im going to practise it until i learn it. Picking and fretting is a very valuable thing to learn.

if you have trouble doing anything quickly enough, use a metronome to slow yourself down. make sure that you play it quickly the same way you do slowly, technique-wise. don't start getting sloppy when you speed it up.. if you can't do it cleanly, slow back down and perfect it.

What size strings do you use?

usually for a solo its a lot of hammer ons and pull offs and bends so try to find those in the music first...for fast picking i tend to place my hand right behind the strings and use the index and thumb finger to pick...well it works well for me

All I can say is practice. People you know may be able to pick something like this up instantly, but that is only because they spent weeks or even months trying to learn something somewhat similar to it. Don't expect to pick something like this up in a night, a week, or even sometimes a month. Just remember to play something else for awhile when you get frustrated, and also remember that once you learn this, you will be able to pick up similar riffs far more quickly. I experienced this myself when I encountered a Metallica song long ago that seemed impossible to me. Took me about three weeks to play it decently. I thought I would spend another three weeks on the next Metallica song I wanted to learn. That didn't happen. I picked up about 10 Metallica songs in a week. Just keep grinding away at the guitar and you'll eventually pick it up. Once you do, try doing some variations of the riff, helps make you a better improviser.
