no, an amp and or dist pedal is just as capable of making your sound "muddy".
a nice guitar with great pickups can still sound like shit through a bad amp. the same way a shitty guitar can sound pretty bad through a good amp.
pickups are just another peice of the tone.

I think it would be better if we start off with different brands of pickups, like......EMG for example
