Sooner or later you'd want a new amp anyway

well, you could just deal with what you got until you can afford a new amp... but you seem pretty dead set on a pedal setup for now.
russian big muff+boss graphic eq pedal. the big muff is a great pedal for that fuzzy dirty thick sound, but they don't have very many controls so you could fine pick it all with a ge-7(which can also act as a noise gate) or something.

Boss Mega Distortion is pretty good, but an equalizer pedal would make it better.

If your amp has a distortion channel, then you could go the Zakk Wylde method and use a boost pedal. He uses the Boss SD-1 and MXR just released the Wylde Overdrive pedal (which is basically the same but with a flat EQ and I a few minor improvements). You could also get a tubescreamer or a Boss DS-1. This is the method I use whenever I can't play on my 5150II. It just sounds less fake cuz you've some real amp distortion in there.

not worth the money if he's probably just going to find one or two distortion tones he likes and then not use the rest.
distortion pedals that try to emulate other cheesey distortion pedals

What he said, I just got a peavey head, and it rapes the MT-2. but on combos and such the MT-2 is a good friend to have around.

for that $250 you'd spend on the pedal, he could almost afford a decent amp(used of course) hell 60w(tube!) blue voodoo 2x12 combos go for like $350 used.
trust me, dm-4 isnt worth it.

Its the Boss Metal Zone MT-2.
Well if your amp has no distortion then thats fine. The MT-2 will give you all the gain you need. I think that the MT-2 will be a good for you now. Once you get a good head then you'll see that the metal zone isn't that great.

Marshall MG's suck, If you want a solid state head try Randall's or Peavey's.

if you bought the combo you wouldn't need the cab because it will have speakers, but if you buy the head you will need a cab, or you could run a line out of the head(not speaker out) into the input of your combo until you can afford a cab. so you'd be using the head as a preamp/distortion source.
have you played the mg series amps? they're ok, nothing special, but don't feel like thats what you have to get because that's all you can afford. you can get alot of shit at great prices on the used market. for under $400 you could easily get a used crate blue voodoo tube combo or head that will beat the crap out of the mg easily.

wow...ok. i chose the mg caus my favorite local band uses one, he told me thatz wat he uses. it was exactly the sound i wanted. ok ill put it this way now - what is the cheapest, but still good quality, amp that i can get, that will distort it like the mg? very deep, overdrive, that kinda stuff. the mg is good 4 a nu-metal sound, caus that wat the band is. i am in a death metal band, but i want that kinda nu-metal sound for the guitar.

used bv120h. off ebay.. it's all tube(120w), and has hella better tone than the mg series for whatever style of music you'll play. it will go from nu metal scoop to grunged out thrash distortion just with the tweak of the mid knob. nice clean channel too. and with 120w of tube power, you could get more volume/headroom than that kids mg head(100w s.s.). a used bv120h head in good condition will go for about as much as a new mg100 from musicians friend.com

dude, go for the H&K warp 7, it has pretty good distortion IMO for a solid state amp, but there is also a tube version, and i am a huge fan of tubes. but the warp 7 kills the mg. it is built for low tuned guitars, so it should give a good deep sound, i had planned on getting one, but since i got a tube amp, thats what i want, i am going for a laney tt50h, gh50l, or vh100r

why, because it says crate on it?
they beat the shit out of those warp 7's every body is "loving" because they say h&K.
the newer blue voodoo's arent even the same amps as the old ones.... it's sad.

first off, i wasnt talking to you,
but i'm comparing them because you can get a blue voodoo for about the same price as a warp 7, and the blue voodoo murders the warp 7. hands down. better cleans, more usable gain, more volume, all the perks...

well, all you ever talk about is 5150's....
the thing with blue voodoos that i love, is that the "crate" decal damages the resale value sooo much that you can buy them used for well under half of what they go for new. i got a chance to use a bv120h in the real world(practices & gigging) for a decent period of time when i was without a preamp for a couple weeks. when i asked my friend how much he paid for it.... he said "bout $300".... i was like fuck! i just saw one the other day at guitarcenter for $800-$900. on top of that, it sounds good and it's all tube.
it's no bogner or anything, but for what they cost they have a really usable sound. so i always suggest them to people that want to buy a new distortion pedal or cheap s.s. amp because they think they can't afford a decent tube amp.

pfft, I use crate amps! I use the Crate shockwave Solid state amp head. Which imo is a good solid state amp.

because it usually is... a crappy guitar will sound like crap, a crappy pedal will sound like crap, and a crappy amp will sound like crap.
sure, alot of your tone comes from you fingers, but so many more elements shape your sound than you fingers.

people are hiding the fact they suck behind expensive equipment.
A good player could make bad equipment sound ok

that's not always the case, but okay you know all.
whether i suck or not i sure like having nice equipment, and it definately sounds better that way.
you're an idiot if you think the amp and or pedal you're using wont have alot to do with your tone.

I saw a kid at a music store playing a nice Jackson through a 5150 and he sounded like shit. So that sorta proves that you can still sound like shit with good equipment.

open your eyes.
it goes hand in hand. if you suck then nice gear may or may not help you sound better, it depends on if you know what your doing. but you could be a great guitarist but sound like shit because of the equipment you use.
the best thing you can do is be as good as you can be and get the gear that seems best for you.
