how do i get my style of guitar playing heavier

i have been playing guitar for 2 years now i have a bc rich bronze warlock with seymore duncan detionator pickups at the bridge and i have a digitech rp 200 pedal i try to get my style like vehemences but when i play in a drop tune i cant seem to make it sound talented while still heavy help me what do i need to do just sit in a room of skulls or flames or something like that

better gear.
cheap bc's suck. detonators suck, and rp's suck, and i don't even know what amp you're using but i bet it aint to great either.
once you have decent gear. slap on some heavy dist, chug on some chunky palm muted chords and play some cool riffs.
a huge part of your tone will come from your technique.

if you want a thick sound I'd suggest a. having humbucker pickups, b. putting bass above tremble, and c. lower tuning. C tuning is a pretty nice tuning along with B.

And stop detuning, and tune more standard so you can make some funky fingerwork with palm mutes, like this:

i would be concernced if my grandmother couldn't play that riff, its not hard, but those 5th fret harmonics really had contrast to make your open drop G power chords really heavy

ok i know my stuff is not all that great i have a 12 watt crate amp im not bad at playing guitar i taught myself how 2 play eruption by ear but back to the subject i play mostly in B or C tuning i just need help on getting my technique better oh one more think i should be getting a nj beast soon with a dimebucker pickup and a randall amp now most people say rp's are not good 4 heavy metal what type of pedal should i get? or should i get different instruments

It doesnt matter what kind of instrument or pedal your gonna buy, because it will always sound crap with an 12 watt amp. Just save your money for a good amp... 50 or 60 watts should suffice

Edit: I didn't read your post right... but get the amp first! If you get a good amp, you won't even need distortion pedal.
But seriously, dont go for the dimebucker

You wont need a distortion pedal with randall amps as they allready have adequate gain, such as RG75 or RG100/200.

All i say is play with friends, practice (scales especially) , get a guitar teacher and most of all enjoy yourself and u'll be good in no time.

p.s-it doesn't really matter about equipment, just worry about progressing on guitar first and then listen to ideas bout gear etc.

To play heavy you need to develop a good palm muting techinique. Get a lot of distortion and palm mute with some power chords to start out and you should be on your way.

fuck heavy assed distortion, fuck downtuning, play heavy, dont tickle the strings, bang the shit out of them. a better amp will help alot, but dont overdo the distortion, the heaviness should come from your hands.

If you want a decent amp that isn't to much try an Ibanez ToneBlaster 50R. I got one last christmas and it has been really good to be. If you want a decent distortion with it do, 8 distortion, last (-) on bass, second to last on med, and trem. just a suggestion.

5150 are the shit, and so are Marshall. Randall are really good for a low price, too, so try for that, I guess.

Damn straight. Also- Bonded by Blood (the album) pretty cool shit, and it is EASY to play. EMG's are the way to go, I use the 81/85's on a LTD M-155 and for thicker distortion, the EMG's own.

distortion with a lot of bass = heavy palm mutes.
heavy palm mute = chunky sound.
DERRRRR!!!!

but i agree with moon raven, equipment can only take you so far, the rest should come from technique.

I'm surprised everyones so into loads of bass.
I like bass and treble both on about 6 or 7, and very little mid (about 2)
Maybe thats just my equipment though...

Also, you dont need to downtune to sound heavy.

bass is good usually i have it at ten and also my treble at ten but my mid at 0 because i like that kinda raspy sound it has...too much bass just ruins the sound of the guitar

A good example of a band who tunes low and sounds unheavy and like shit is... Korn!
7 strings and tuned down... I sound 5x as heavy as them and I use 6 string guitars and tune only 1/2 step down.

And about the mids.. I only scoop when I'm playing by myself even then I don't have the mids all the down. It sounds better that way but with other musicians then I will turn it up to about 5.

Hmmmm I take that back with me sounding 5x as heavy... Its more like 100x as heavy.

haha yea cannibal corpse korn does not sound that heavy but i dont think they put as much distortion so as to sound more mellow and dreary but im not sure

My RP-7 downtunes for me if I turn the mod on Its really useful, since my guitar teacher would kill me if I downtuned. So that way, I can keep in in E on the guitar, and play in D.

Playing sound brutal ass hell. Obituary style!!!

EMGs are good for heavy sounds, too.. although i prefer dimarzios. tone zone + air norton = bone crunching sounds.

they're very responsive, so when you start smashing the strings with your first, you hear the difference big time.

a good amp is very necessary for any good sounds, though. the best guitar in the world will sound like piss on a small, cheap amp.

Your gear does matter though. I'd like to see YOU trying to play Obituary through a Squeir 15 watt practice amp, with an Ibanez GIO.

Thats what I thought.

Palm Muting is good, but in excess is annoying. Fast picking is a staple of heavy playing. Listen to:

Malevolent Creation
Obituary
Suffocation
Morbid Angel
Etc.

Listen to their music. Learn the songs. Then build your style around what you've learned.

Yeah, of course! But you can get heavy sound(but without distortion) on a classical guitar you know! But ofcourse it gets alot heavier if you have a custom made BC Rich Warlock with a Marshall Mode Four, hehe

I think he was refering to the Mode Four. Which isn't a 'bad' amp just a little expensive + theres better, cheaper amps out there.

No they're not, their heaviest song is played in drop D (demon of the fall).

all of opeths shit is in E except demon and blackwater, which are in drop-d, a variation on E standard, sthey dont detune more than the low E, EVER, as a matter of fact, some of the tunes off of damnation, windowpane and hope leaves for example, use a capo on the second fret.

Capo's are good! It makes a songs actualy sound different, unlike detuning all the time

What the hell are you talking about? Using a capo and detuning do basically the same thing.

Detuning is so standards these days. And I have seen guitarist using some capo to begin a song equiped with it, then in some part remove it. I'd like to see someone tune from C# to E standard in between songs (and use one guitar!)

a few things: use punctuation. And headbang while playing... no matter what youre playing, the headbanging will make it look heavier ... and yea... palm muting.

Your style must to come from your inside, from what you wanna do playing a guitar. It's like sometimes you kill while your playing, or lost yourself into an endless chord, i dont known. A good equipment it's very important, but i think it's more important how you fell about what you're doing. Never mind what other people think, don't care, but i hope you'll never be satisfied.

Change pick ups, use palm muting and use som real big amps 500watt sounds pretty cool...

i find it can sound heavier if you turn the gain down to about 3/4 so it doesnt sound muddy (but maybe thats just the gear i use) and do a lot of palm muting, pinched harmonics and tremelo picking
