When soloing,where do you guys pick?
Closer to the neck or the bridge?

I usually move towards the neck when I do more leadish type of things. For rhythm, I play between the pickups, slightly to the neck side. For lead, I can move as far as down to the 19 fret, though I usually stop above the neck pickup.

When I solo, I pick right where the fretboard starts. I can just shred better this way. If theres some palm muting in the solo, then obviously I will be picking by the bridge.

I pick in the same spot as well. The only time I change where I pick is when I palm mute, and that's towards the neck because it gives a chunkier sound.

how can you plam mute closer to the neck? is that even possible?
i pick in mostly the same place i think, never really took notice to it. |

It's all personal preferences so someone elses preference on where they pick is really meaning less.
I just happened to realize that I play closer to the neck most of the time.

Yes, its all personal, so play solos where it feels the best for you. Just check out how Marty Friedman ( former Megadeth guitarist ) picks his solos. I don't think anyone showed him how to play, but he can still play anything with that weird method of his.

Exactly, his picking style is so odd but who is going to tell him to change it??? It works (amazingly) well for him and it must also feel right to him. Don't play closer to the neck or bridge because other people do it doesnt matter where the hell you pick (within reason). So close this thread right now because you shall do what feels best to YOU |

i pretty much always pick around my middle pickup, slightly infront of it, but not really inbetween middle and neck. i've been thinking about that recently and testing the waters of picking over the neck pickup for solos, but i feel most comfortable just infront of the middle pickup. it's just natural for me.
