7 String pickups...
Hey guys. I've been thinking about the next guitar I want to get and I've decided on getting a 7 string. What pickups would you guys suggest I put in it for playing very heavy metal? I went to seymourduncan.com and they don't offer the JB in a 7 string version, and that was the pickup I wanted the most. I don't want EMGs because my two main guitars already have them, I want some variation in tones. What are your thoughts? Thanx a lot.

BTW, if you have a suggestion, can you tell me both brand and model? Just saying Seymour Duncan doesn't do me much good.

if you're really serious about the JB, you could throw down for a custom pickup by SD:
http://www.seymourduncan.com/websit...ustomshop.shtml
other pickups you could try are from Dimarzio
Neck: Air Norton 7, Blaze neck (sounds like 6 string Evolution(neck), PAF7.
Bridge: Blaze (sounds like Steve's Special), Blaze Custom, Evolution 7, Tone Zone 7
If you want a sound like John Petrucci's but be sort of unique (i don't think he uses these pickups in his guitars), you could go for Air Norton 7, and Blaze bridge

yeah, if they don't make it now, then they'll probably design it soon. these days, pickup companies are trying to make 7-string copies of their 6 string models.

I put Blaze 7's in my Ibanez. Sounds good too, kind of a scooped mid range.
Be careful of EMG 707's! They are EMG 81's for 7 strings, but they don't fit in most pick up spaces on 7 string guitars. They need special routing and if you have a pickguard like mine does then forget it. I was pissed! Rant over.

Thats not true the 707 is a different pickup. The 707 was designed by dino from fear factory i belive. They do make a 7 string emg 81 if your interested http://guitarpartsdepot.com/Merchan...gory_Code=EMGCS but only guitarpartsdepot sells them, they made a deal with EMG.

According to the EMG site, the 707 is based off of the 85, because it's Alnico.

Your right! Looks like the 707 is more 85 then 81. Thank for correcting me on that one and, BLS, thanks for that site too. But I still wish EMG would make their 7's so that they could easily be installed. I would have them if I could make them fit right.
Damn, I could have my favoriate pup set, 85/81, only 7 string, but no, EMG had to make those things all funky.

EMG Designed the 7 string pickups so they dont need pickup rings.. which just causes compatibility problems. They truly are genius'

Aren't they installed like bass pickups, directly into the wood?
