meh nothingface, don't like them at all.
most original metal band, good one, I guess in real metal Obituary, they are original in their style, not too technical but no-one ever copied them exactly, they allways have a cool groove in their songs which is why they're one of my favorite bands of all time.

For most original bands i would have to go with Haggard and Artefact, it's pretty hard to explain how they are so original in their sound. You have to hear them to understand where i am coming from.

You must be kidding they have way too
many Celtic Frost influences to be considered original!
I'm not saying that they are not good but they are
certainly not original.
Haggard is quite original. Also Thorns , Celtic Frost ,
Dodheimsgard

they may have other influences, but I do think they are original in their own genre, they're not too technical, more on the simple side with grooving riffs and drumwork, their style hasn't been copied often, well bands tried, but nobody comes close IMO, they just have a whole copyright around their style or something.
either you like them or don't, but I do think they're pretty original.
ok, Nile is way more original, Haggard too, but like I said, I had a brain fart.

what's left? i mean, opera style vocals with metal tunes on the background. some call it symphonic metal and i've never heard any bands like them, especially in the Secret of the Runes album.
there might be more bands like them, but i don't know any.

Death in a lot of ways, became original after the first few albums. I don't know a single band that's really similar to them.
Gorguts were quite original and experimental too.
And let's say... Cynic, for the strange (and ugly IMO) synth voice and the riffs, still more technical than a lot of the stuff that is made today.

and add Manowar as well.
to quote the BNR site:
"It's amazing that, after all this time, Manowar still has a sound that really isn't like anyone else, highlighted by Eric Adam's excellent vocals and a pounding rhythm section led by bassist (and chief songwriter) Joey DeMaio."

Hm, yeah I guess you do have a point there, I saw them live once and I didn't think they where any good, they looked mostly gothic to me but the music wasn't all that gothic I guess. their old work was more deathmetal like, but the newer stuff like ''Lepacca kliffoth', 'Theli', 'Vovin', 'Deggial' en 'Secret of the ruins' is just way different.

Dripping. Who else incorporates J-Pop and Gangster Rap samples into brutal death metal? And by "brutal", I mean Devourment "brutal".
Cephalectomy also. They are like.. Cryptopsy on acid.

Definately Sepultura, their insanely fast guitar riffs, and solos that they came up with on their own. I love Children oF Bodom but all their riffs are from Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden

Yep gotta love COB, all i was saying was that thier guitar riffs arent original, but they were one of the first bands to mix neo classical with the metal sound and feel to create one after another heart pounding album.
I believe anal cunt deservers some respect here because of their originality
who else would think of a song called "I snuck a retard into a sperm bank"
or "I gave your kid aids so you could watch it die"
They are BRILLIANT!!!

That reminds me of a question that's been on my mind. What is the name of the genre of music that those opera-style vocals are usually with? It's a type of opera, but Im not sure what the exact name is.

I really don't think they were the first band to do that... I could not name the first one but I'm sure it's not COB.

Dream Theater
Nightwish

Whether you like them or not, Summoning is, in my opinion, the most original band out there. No other band are even close to sound like them. They have created an all new sound: a kind of new wave black metal (how weird).
Finntroll also got their pretty unique sound.

Skyclad would be up there. Vintersorg, Blind Guardian, Nile, Opeth is pretty original too. Lyrically, Bolt Thrower would be up there too.

Here's few more original ones:
Ephel Duath
Rakoth
Daath
Destinity
Lunaris (not so much on their new album)
Orphaned Land (Very Original shit)
Throes of Dawn
Also i don't think Nile are that original because its just Death Metal their playing, it may have Egyptian influences but its still just typical old Death Metal.

I wouldn't say that. Their whole music is also based on egyptian scales, etc. And even if it was pure death metal, the concept is still original.

Hands down: Anal Cunt best noise grind band with many followers. They were way different in the grind department than Napalm Death and Carcass.

If you can name a death metal band from the last 15 years who sound remotely like Nile, I will consider your statement to have a semblance of truth to it. I know that you can't

well, they do have a few standard death metal songs (pestilence and inquity, chapter for ....) but all in all they are pretty crazy

I have to agree with you John. Even if there are 1 or 2 bands that may be a little similair to Nile, there are still, in the long run, very few. And there are some bands people consider to be original that I have found actually sound like a few other bands ive heard. IMO, Nile is quite original and always will be in the category of death metal. It is a little hard to be original in death metal, if you ask me, and that is because so many death bands have many of the same elements which complete the sound. But Nile added more, and in doing so they exceed the rest of them. Thats just my view and Im drunk anyway. I also think Cryptopsy belongs in the catagory of original, simply because I cant think of many (death metal) bands that sound quite like them. Maybe I havnt heard much death metal though...

Chant Song. That's one creepy bastard of a tune & it's so good! Just one example of why Nile fucking rule.
However, for true originality, you can't go past Gwar.
...or the Flaming Back-Fanny Flange Gang of York...
..yeah, they're great.

How ironic is it that when someone flamed Priest the first insult thrown at them was "cocksucker". And yes Priest does suck, so does Halford for that matter.

Ever come face to face with a hardcore Judas Priest fan? Fucking nightmares. They know one topic & one topic only. You know the kind of arsehole that won't let you talk over their favourite part...which just happens to be all of them...ugh. Cunts.
Hey, did you know that Rob Halford once wore his cap so low over his eyes that he pranged his motorcycle on stage because he couldn't see a fucking thing?

I think Children of Bodom is pretty original, I've grown fond of Alexi's vocals as I used to find them annoying.

The Berzerker. Their sound not their look. Dark Funeral too. I've never really heard a black metal band like them.

Compare Immolation with Nile, or Cephalic Carnage with Death, or any combination that you wish from m=l's list and you will find that none of them sound anywhere near like each other - they are all pretty much as original as you can get.

Someone beat me to it but Ephel Duath are out there, the perfect mix of jazz and metal, you might say meshuggah did it first but they really don't sound alike, not that meshuggah aren't original.
I have to mention cryptopsy because when I first heard none so vile it totally revived my faith in death metal, I think they brought the genre back to life... or death whatever.
Nile and Opeth deserve mention too, and a bunch of others... that don't come to mind right now.
Oh yeah Emperor, best BM band ever, they have an atmospheric sound coupled with grindcore derived blast beats... there isn't a band out there that sounds quite like them.

I would say Testament are original too because of Skolnick's jazz influences. The lyrics wern't too original though.
