When I change strings, I wipe my shit off with a damp cloth. I'm sure there are better techniques.

It all depends on the guitar you own and how much you play. There is some great info in some of the other guitar threads here. You should search there first because this has been covered already. If there is something specific you need help with then people will jump at it to help as long as it doesn't repeat another thread. Like ask about a specific product or brand of gear and that will get peeps attention and will help you better.

Fast fret it good to rub nasty shit off strings. But to clean a fretboard and revive the natural oils in it Fretboard Conditioner is the best. I bought a neck off ebay once and it reeked of smoke, the smoke even dried up the fretboard. I used some fretboard condioner... it removed the nasty smoke smell and "revitalized" the fretboard. Its pretty cheap and one of those little bottles lasted me 3 years, i used it every time i changed strings. Just rub it on with a cloth.. let it soak into fretboard for a few minutes and then wipe the excess off. Smells like laundry detergent too! And thats my tale of Gibson Luthier Fretboard Condtioner
THE END

McQuires is incredibly good for getting scratches out. Brings the paint 'back to life,' too.
I think i'll pick up some of that fretboard shit. I am starting to need it. Its a good idea to wash your hands before you play, too. it will lengthen the life of your strings by a long shot. Keeps gunk from building up. Unfortunately, i stopped doing that awhile ago...

I use DR black coated strings because I have acid hands and they look cool too. Uncoated strings don't last with me long ( one set every week ), just because they groady up no matter what I cleaned them with. DR coated strings last about a month without feeling rusty or scally before just going dead on me. All I do is wipe them down when I'm done and they stay slick as snot. They sound and feel really nice.

I use Virtuoso Cleaner and polish. The shit works mates. It's $10 bucks a bottle here, but it lasts for a while. Currently I use lemon oil to condition my fretboard because a bunch of people told me that was the best way. I'm pretty interested in getting some of this Gibson stuff though. What do you know about lemon oil BLS?

I guess the fretboard coniditioner does the same stuff as lemon oil but it dosent leave a lemon scent. Murphy's oil soap for wood works pretty good too.

Yeah, I don't want to smell like the fruit aisle at a grocery store after I play...
What is that fretboard conditioner (i.e., brand)

AHHH, I fucking hate those strings. I might be thinking of a different brand, but when I had those black coated strings, the black coating wore off in a couple hours of playing. The strings had really bad tone. The next day I got some REAL strings on there.

The coating does come off a little where the pick hits the strings and just under where the frets are, but that is suppose to happen. For the most part the strings are covered from corrosion and always feel smooth. They don't work well with passive pups, because the coating prevents the string from being grounded and can fuck the tone. If used with EMGs, which don't require a ground, then the tone isn't affected.
I guess some people love them and some don't, but they are the best thing since Kahler for me.

i use gibson fretboard conditioner.. basically lemon oil from a hardware store works just as well. i put a little bit on the fretboard whenever i change strings, and it keeps the fretboard great.
get some metal sponge looking stuff at a hardware store (real name eludes me right now) to buff up the frets when they get dull.
get a bit of polish for the body to keep it glistening.
that stuff will work nicely. i recommend some type of microfiber cloth to wipe the body down.. regular cotton cloth can scratch the finish over time.
don't use a damp cloth to wipe it down.. water isn't good for the wood! lemon oil is what it wants.. water is what it hates.
whenever you're done playing the guitar.. wipe the fretboard/strings down with some sort of cloth. your strings will last longer, and your fretboard will stay clean. the sweat/junk from your fingers after playing for a while will corrode the strings when you put the guitar down, so wipe that stuff off. 10 seconds will go a long way.

They use citrus orange cleaner. Then wipe it down with Fast Fret. But I don't think they make anything to get the Lay's Barbeque chip crap off my strings. Maybe I should start washing my hands before I play.

I think you're thinking about steel wool.
Also i've heard you shouldn't use lemon oil or other conditioners more than about once a month (i dunno how often you guys change your strings, but with my playing style, 9s on my ESP don't last me more than two weeks).

Extra fine steel wool is great for cleaning and polishing your frets, plus getting the groady shit off your bourd, but make sure you protect your pups with tape or an old cloth because the wool dust can fuck your pups windings and magnitic fields not to mention what they can do to your pots and switches.
Everyone really likes lemon oil; I use bore oil for reasons to long to post right here, but I only use it once every 6 months because to much oil moisture will warp fretbourds and necks slowly over time. It sounds crazy but I use ( very little on a cloth ) non-ammonia window cleaner first, followed by steal wool, and then bore oil 2 times a year to clean my fretbourds. Once a month I change my strings and clean my fretbourds ( 2 times a month if you don't use coated strings ) with a good rub down, but wipe and clean your fretbourd and strings after every play.
