Randy Rhoads-Ozzy
I was listening to some old ozzy (ultimate sin) last night. I've read stuff here
and there about Randy Rhoads. I like a lot of ozzy's stuff, new and old, and
I was wondering some things:
Who comes up with ozzy's songs? Does he just let the band figure out a
tune and then he applies the lyrics? Does Ozzy play any
instruments/compose music?
Is Randy Rhoads the guy who helped/propelled Ozzy on his solo career? Did
they complement each other extremely well? Is RR the shit?

I'm not sure but it seems to me Ozzy is one lucky man, he was surrounded by awesome musicians his whole life. He'd probably still be working in some cheap ass factory in England if not for them. Well maybe not, he's still got an incredible voice.

Ozzy's voice is not so much incredible as it is unique. The fellow who replaced Ozzy as the singer for Black Sabbath (Ronnie James Dio), was by far a supreme singer to Ozzy in every aspect. However Ronnie didn't have the unique voice that Ozzy possessed. Ozzy had a certain mysteriousness about him that made Black Sabbath such a unique sound (not to mention they were the first of their kind in terms of the metal genrè).

I listened to some more ozzy last night and concentrated entirely on RR. He definitely has some good stuff. He plays fills and legatos everywhere. He plays little melodies while ozzy is singing. They are there but do not go over ozzy's voice, very well combined. I'm going to be looking into some more of RR's past and stuff.

yea i found out the same thing when listening to the album Ozzmosis, although it had Zakk playing guitar, ozzy's voice still came through real well. And everything just went together

I was being sarcastic with the voice. But yeah, there's only one Ozzy, and he swears a lot.

Eh. If I know what I'm talking about, I'll give you my opinion. If I don't know what I'm talking about, you're going to hear my opinion anyway. I guess you should feel relieved that I knew what I was talking about in this case.
PS: Zakk Wylde considers Randy Rhoads to be one of the three best guitarists to ever have existed.

Zakk it's all right. RR aside with Stevie Ray Vaughn are my favourite guitarrist, so sad the way they die.

Rhoads wasn't no Ultimate Sin, but I may be misinterpreting what you were trying to say in the first place.
Anyway, this is was I've heard:
Rhoads wrote the music.
Daisley wrote the lyrics.
Ozzy wrote the vocal melodies.
The drummer got paid.

I read an old GW interview with Randy. He said Ozzy would hum an idea for the vocal melody and Randy would then come up with a chord progression under it, so I'm assuming he wrote the riffs. By the way, it's the June issue and you guys should read it. I never understood what the big deal was until I read it and realized what a genius he was.

i have that issue. he was definately passionate about his music. and he has been a major influence on every lead...fuck it, just about every guitarist that has ever heard his stuff, and in sucha short time. i thinbk that biggest shame is thast we will never get a chance to hear what he would have sounded like were he still alive. like they, its not the good that die young. but rather the great

You call Rhoads over-rated, but you list King as your favorite guitarist? Pfft, anyone can use a wammy bar, Junior. Hanneman is where the skill is.
Stay on topic, though. This is a thread about Rhoads.
Over-rated, yes. Pure Genius, yes.

Shut up, Randy is one of Zakk's biggest influences and role models. Give credit were credit is due. And how cna you say he was over rated??? We never even got to see him progress, we never got to hear his future work, if anything he is underrated and always will be.

Randy Rhoads was ahead of his time and an excellent guitar player, but slightly over-rated due to his untimely death. Still, a great player.

Jake E. Lee played on the Ultimate Sin album. I don't know if he followed RR or not, but the two playing styles are in the same direction, don't you think?

Yea, wtf? Randy Rhoads overrated? How's he overrated? He's influenced like millions of people, many of which are considered todays top players. He barely had a chance to show anyone how kick ass he was...Look at his first album with Ozzy and compare it to someone else's first album that you think is great. What I'm sayin is, look at the small time he had to show off his talent and look at how much he has made an impact on todays guitar playing.
Also, to many of the people here asking if his stuff is good and if u should get it, I'd suggest it highly...especially the Tribute album.

Ozzy's Randy Rhoads Tribute album is one of the greatest of his solo career. It's a live album & it fucking rules. It's got the coolest (albiet cheesiest) intro in the world: Carl Orf's 'O Fortuna', which only Ozzy could really get away with.
And it's got the best versions of 'Crazy Train', 'Paranoid', & 'Children of the Grave' I've ever heard. Some of the rest of it is a bit poxy, but for the most part it's really fucking awesome & RR's playing owns.

From what I've read in interviews with Ozzy. Ozzy does come up with tune/melody ideas and Randy was the first guitarist who would sit down with him and try to convert them into a song(Ozzy wrote very little in Sabbath as Geezer penned all the lyrics).
Randy was originally in a band called Quiet Riot before joining Ozzy. He did 2 studio albums(Blizzard Of Ozz, Diary of a Madman) and a live one released several years after his death. Randy died in 1982 when the light aircraft he was in crashed.
After his death Brad Gillis and Bernie Thorme filled in for live shows(Speak Of The Devil album)before he recruited Ratt guitarist Jake E Lee(Bark at the Moon, Ultimate Sin) Jake left in 1987 I think (rumour has it he was miffed about the release of the Randy Rhodes Tribute?) He formed a band called Badlands.
Zakk joined, the rest is history as they say.
I do not think Randy is or was overrrated, have you actually listened to his work???? Mr Crowley, Diary of a Madman, SATO, Believer!
I love Slayer to bits but Kerry and Jeff ain't ever come up with a guitar solo as mind blowing as Revelation(Mother Earth)!!!!!!!!!!

Frankly, all those guitarists named in this thread totally rip us apart. They are all good.
Like the great Tom Petty replied to people that said that his shit is easy and simple:
"Yeah? Let's see you do it!"

Wasn't my avatar, Trend would change his avatar every week.. So I cant help you out on that one.
My comment towards Trend was part of our love/hate relationship. No hard feelings.. we just shit on each other every chance we could get. Certain people dont realize this and feel the need to open their mouth.
Oh, and I just want to say that Jake E. Lee sucks.

Im just saying it because hes a greedy little fucker who tought he WAS Ozzy. His only goal was the CONTROL the band, in every way possible. His leads never fit in either.. Randy and Zakk both BELONG in Ozzy's band. Jake was out of place.. he should of stuck with Ratt.
