Recently i got a chord chart with 72chords. Most of these chords have these names like AMAJ7 or Dm9# and such. I know what these added symbols mean, but what is the theory behind it to use them? ie when to use a AMAJ7 chord instead of an regular A or Am?

Everything is compared to the C major scale for all nomanclature. The reason they have those long screwed up names is because of the interval differences between them and the C major scale intervals.

edit: sorry I misunderstood the question.

The theory behind using them is the same as using any chord. You use different progressions for different sounds. Try building a progression with some of the more exotic chords and see for yourself. Just identify the intervals and go from there.

Here's something important for you to remember. There are 12 notes, that's fewer than half the letters of the alphabet. If you can learn to spell, you can learn how to put those notes together to play music. Have fun. =]

lets not forget that there are 32 variations per note you could play...
