New Fretboard
Once I have money, I was thinking of getting a new fretboard on my guitar.
I have a rose wood fretboard on there now. I was thinking of an Ebony one.
So, how possible would that be? How much money? And any other things I need to know?
Thanks a lot

I think you would have to replace the whole neck, and the cost, or even the possibility of being able to replace it would vary. I don't like changing the neck out, unless it is a really good match with the guitar body that it's going to be attached to. I would rather just preserve the guitar in it's current state and buy another one.
What guitar do you own, anyways?

Replacing just a fret board would probably cost as much or more than what the guitar is worth. A new neck, on the hand is a different story.

Its not worth replacing a fretboard. But it is possible. It would be smarter to just have a new neck made if its a bolt on.

First off, you gotta understand that I really like this guitar no matter how good other people think it is, so I am willing to pay a lot of money to get it fixed.
Yeah, I guess a new neck would make the most scence. I've been told that it has some neck problems so I'm kinda leaning towards a new neck.
My guitar is a Washburn WG-200 (Not very good - kinda cheap but I really like it, I really can't shred or get as good Pinch harmonics on other guitars)
I consider this my main guitar.
Now, any suggestions on necks? And how much would a new neck cost + installation?
Thanks

Don't pay for installation if it's a bolt-on. A new neck will cost anywhere from 30-300 bucks. I would recommend something like a Wizard II if you're into thrashing.

First you need to figure out what type of neck pocket your guitar has.. this requires the removal of the neck. Use This link to help you.
Once thats figured out you can either look on ebay for necks or get one custom made at http://www.usacustomguitars.com/ or www.warmoth.com
(make sure to check out the showcase at warmoth) Ibanex also sells necks, but theirs are a little pricey. Most important thing is to make sure the neck fits your body and that it has the same number of frets or else you will have a fucked up scale length leading to wacky intonation.

i would say it's not worth it, but then again, you do love this guitar of yours (it's not a bad thing, i love my axe too ) but if i were you, i would do what the others have said and try to invest on a new neck. if i'm not mistaken, your neck pocket is pretty much the same as a fenders, so you should check out warmoth. their necks are made to fit into fender pockets (thats kind of a bad thing..)
but then comes this problem: you probably are wicked good solely on your guitar because it is set up PERFECTLY for you... getting a new neck, or even a fretboard, would totally destroy your perfect set up, rendering it pretty much impossible to set it up JUST the way you like it...
after all, no two guitar necks are exactly alike.. blame mother nature for that....
your on your own buddy...

Ok, I've come to the conclusion that it would make the most sence if I just got some new awesome inlays. That was mainly what I was wanting is just some really awesome inlays.
Would it be cheaper to get new inlays or a new neck? I guess it all depends on how complex the inlays are...

Old old thread
I have a Kramer Vanguard with a shit rosewood fretboard, and it is Neck-thru. Great guitar, awful fretboard. Can it actually be replaced?
If not, what oils would be good for it (it is very dry and is starting to crack a little)

Yes, It can be replaced. I use Murphy's Oil Soap to clean the fretboard and then rub some Gibson Fretoard Conditioner to keep the oil's conditioned.

If it's that bad I would probably re-finish it with a hard wood finish or lacquer to lock all the loose particles in place. Oils will protect a piece of wood that is not being handled but will not help on a fretboard much since you will be scraping pieces of wire across it all the time.
Hey, let's bumb up ALL of CannibalCorpse's old threads to make it look like he's still here and busy as ever!!!

Great idea! Lacquer will resist oil and dirt very well too.

Not a good idea... Laquer will dry out that fretboard worse than anything.

The only fretboard that can recieve any type of finish is maple, and that is because it is a much softer wood. Rosewood and Ebony are much harder woods and with some fretboard cleaner and a fine brillo pad(without the detergent) do fine by protecting themself with their natural oils.

Plus maple has close grains, rosewood dosen't.. it will just absorb most of the laquer..

Than don't.
Obviously if you leave your neck out in the trunk of your car, it is going to warp and dry, but with proper care it will be fine. Anything that is unnatural to the wood is a big no-no. Its common knowlege that you should only use products that restore the woods natural oils, nothing that is abrasive and nothing that is as severe as a coat of laquer.

Jesus, your strings are so low in your nut it's not funny. The sides of the nut should never come up above the sides of the wound strings, and only just higher than the top strings. Kylito's right, your nut needs replacing

drop that fucking washb~ guitar and get one of these bad asses
http://www.ibanez.com/guitars/guitar.asp?model=RG370DX
fuck getting ebony fingerboards.
the cost of you getting shark inlays and a new fingerboard will cost you TWICE the amount of this guitar.
And this guitar has a neck that feels like freakin butter, the Wizard II and SHARKTOOK inlays.
alone it looks like a 800$ guitar.
pricetag will run you at $360 a piece.

I just happen to have been extremely bored, so i just checked in and see how MT was doing. i noticed this thread I made a loong time ago, and noticed your extremely stupid post.
I think I made it clear earlier in this thread that I have a sedimental attatchment to my washburn, and this guitar happens to play and sound amazingly- to the extent that i wouldnt get rid of it.
You are indeed an idiot.
Bia, your getting dead frets near the nut? There is a good chance that your neck doesnt have the proper relief.
Press down at the 16th fret with your right hand, and press down on the 1st fret with your right hand- both on the 6th string. check at around the 6th fret, there should be a small amount of space between the fret wire and the string. if theres no space between the string and fret wire, then losen the truss rod a bit, and this should fix your problem.
and, i am not officially back yet, i just saw this dumbass post by gamma and had to comment.

How much (or just how) will a new fretboard improve your playing? I don't understand how your sound would change.

It wont improve your playing... nothing will besides practice.
It will alter the sound of you guitar... that is if you using Passives.
