I'm having problems with my lead/rhythm sounds.

Ok,first off,I use ESP/LTD stock pickups and a Crate GFX-30 watt solid state amp. When I use rectifier distortion it sounds fine for rhythm/chord stuff, but when I play leads it sounds noisy, too harsh and I can't really make out what I'm playing. So I flipped the toggle switch to just the neck pickup, and when I solo it sounds awesome,I can make out what Im playing better and the leads sound clearer but then the chords sound dull and lack sustain. And when I solo starting scales around midrange notes they sound fuzzy also.

What should I do? Thanks alot guys.

my leads sounded like shit, so I got some duncan pickups and changed from pedal distortion to my amp distortion. Im shredding like fun now, completely happy with the sound.
