Nile.
Can't make out a word the motherfucker's saying, but at least there's good music behind it.

In my eyes, Nile (and Akercocke) are the forebearers that will take death metal through the next 5-10 years of it's development. Sure, there are still many, many great bands in the genre but no-one can compare to Nile's overall diversity and power.
The vocals are hard to decipher but who listens to DM for the lyrics? With Nile it is the musicianship and ability to write killer riffs that shines through - every Nile song has at least one memorable riff while the majority are chock full of them (Execration Text and Chapter For Transforming Into A Snake are just two examples).
Another aspect that I love about Nile is the obvious hard work and effort that they - and especially Karl - go into in order to provide the sort of experience that DM fans can only dream of. For example, sit and read the lyrics and Karl's explaination of the meanings and mythology behind them and you will find yourself emersed into the Egyptian theme that they so excellently carve.
I have also seen them live and that show remains my best live experience to date. Karl is famously quoted as saying that "Nile will play every show as if it's their last" and after seeing them I find it very hard to doubt him. The Pharoah is dead, long live Nile!

Actually I do , but it's not the main reason.
I agree to everything else you said, especially about the mythology, I think there should be more "conceptual" bands like that (I'm not sure if this word sounds ok in english).
The only album I can really listen to from the beginning to the end is "In their darkened shrines", because the production is much better than on the other albums (low tuning + bad production = ...)

i thought nephran ka sounded pretty good, kind of clean
black seeds sounds pretty bad though
i agree, i like conceptual (yes, that sounds fine) bands. and albums.
as long as the albums arent forced , IE lyrics before music

Yeah, the production is particularly good on that album considering they tune to drop A. Actually, I think that ITDS is one of the best produced albums that I've heard for a band that tunes that low and is a marked improvement on the production quality of Black Seeds Of Vengeance.
One can see how Nile have progressed by considering the increase in quality of both the songwriting and production from album to album. I can only hope that this trend continues for the next album - if it does, then we are truly looking at an immense album landing at our feet within the next year or so.
Darko: I thought they did a pretty good job of recreating their sound when I saw them, although I saw them in a venue that held probably no more than 200-300 people so I suppose everything could be heard much clearer than in a larger venue where sound can dissipate more readily.
MC: I think another of Nile's allures is that they are a very conceptualised band. Nile make it work simply due to the fact that Karl seems to be absolutely fascinated by old Egyptian mythology and the works of HP Lovecraft et al. When someone is as passionate as Karl obviously is about their chosen concept, that passion is manifested within the music and adds to a more enjoyable, immersive listen.

Nile is great.
the egyptian theme, the brutal drumming, the outstanding guitar riffs... they are just that good.
favourite album... Catacombs of Nephren-Ka, no doubt.

Nile is very good, one of my favorite bands. Anyone know when they will come out with something new? They have a new frontman now, not sure who he is though. There should also be another video out soon along with Sarchophagus.

Jon Vesano replaced Chief Spires on bass just before they entered the studio to record ITDS. He's a great presence on stage and could be considered the main contributor of Nile's three-pronged vocal attack. Also, I'm certain that they'll have a new album out within the next 12-18 months.
I've only ever heard one Immolation song, Rival The Eminent, but it sounded great. I think that one was taken from Unholy Cult, but could anyone recommend an album by them for me to buy? Obviously, I'd buy Dawn Of Possession if it wasn't out of print but I was thinking of getting Unholy Cult. Good choice?

unholy cult is amazing, kind of like a slimmed down gorguts album
the vocals get tedious but the guitar work is great. and drums
theyll harass you for about 2 minutes with hyperblast and fast vocals then go into a really good groove part

Yeah, they go down to drop A. The decision to tune that low seems to have paid off with the increase in production quality on In Their Darkened Shrines. Now that they've perfected the production, the tuning shouldn't be much of a problem on upcoming albums. The only drawback, as Darko mentioned, is that their sound is terribly hard to produce in medium to large sized venues.

Karl, Dallas and Jon share the vocals and I don't think that there are many songs were just one of them handles all the vocals. I think Jon does the majority of the vocals but Karl and Dallas do their fair share also. Tony doesn't contribute to the vocals because he's too busy blasting at warp speed!

I dont like death metal much, but i really like Nile. I think they are one of the few bands who really have a strong theme set for themselves and stick to it. In fact, i dont think ive found many other bands to be quite so dedicated to the theme they have based their music on. So they always have my respect. Black seeds of vengeance has always been my favorite.

Is that true? I was at their official site last week and it didn't mention any line up changes. Having said that, I don't think their site's been updated for 6 months...

There is no line-up changes. The only thing happening is that Tony is recording the drums for the new Angelcorpse album.
