Get too nervous when singing....
Ok, call me a pussy if you want, I dont care.
I said I'll sing for my band but whenever I go up to the mic I get nervous and my voice sounds shit, but it sounds good when I'm not nervous.
Does anyone have any tips on getting over this?
I sing clean in a thrashy band btw.

practice breathing properly, look at your frets when you play, pretend youre in the shower, just experiment
rely on drugs to get you through the show and youll be a junkie in no time

Picture everybody naked. Then scream like a pussy schoolgirl, bitch. Nawww, I actually like that feeling of anxiety. I use it to give me extra energy to jump around and make an ass of myself.

Yah well you just gotta remember that YOU are the one up their, not anybody else because they don't have the talent(im guessing you do). At least you are going up their in front of a bunch of people. Remember that the people in the crowd are the pussies not you.
And if that doesnt help than i dont think anything will you pussy

the way i look at is you arent there for any reason but to have fun, so who cares if you sound crap ... im sure once you get going you will be better ..... also it might help if you get one of the other members to do back up vocals then you have someone to fall back on
if its not at practice that this happens then get a couple of non band friends to come to practice so they can listen to provide positive support

Be nervous. You should be. Your voice probally sucks and everyone will be paying complete attention to your horriblenss.
Just kidding. I get morbidly afraid playing infront of people I don't know, so I know somewhat where you are coming from. I recomend just getting a slight buzz just enough to get over social pressures and you'll be fine. You can also take Dramamine (sp?) to relax yourself. It can be bought at any drug store. And last but not least, have confidence in yourself.

If your just a singer than drink a couple beers to relax yourself But if you play guitar then dont, unless you wanna be a miserable drunk who cant play his instrument. I never really get nervous onstage because im not the only person up their, if i was alone it would suck though.

I've sung with choirs and I've sung with a small group of friends at nursing homes in "godspell" type attire back in the 70's. I even did a solo of "Day by Day " that my friends with me did backup on and we all said we sounded awesome. I also did duets, too. I haven't done that in years though.
I've recently learned how to use the sound recorder on my pc and I was recording a song I wrote. I was pretty scared and a friend I had listen to it said between a few of the recordings he could tell I went from nervous to not so. It has a couple musically low spots and while I was nervous I could not hit those. And they were my favorite parts ! I finally got so disgusted that I overcame my nervousness and it's better now. I still have work to do on it though and then he'll make me an mp3. Yeah.
But as for doing live performances, force yourself. Think of one person in your mind to sing to that you're comfortable with. Stare at the mic. Sometimes once you get going it becomes easier, but it's the initial part that's the biggest problem.
I've heard numerous people on tv , vh-1 type shows , that are very big stars say that they still get nervous when they walk onto a stage, but if you really know you're pieces inside out, just do your best.
I envy those that can play their instruments in front of people and sing. I'm working on that cuz I know I'd love to do it.

I have a little problem with playing in front of people. I dont sing, yet, but I think i might have to in the future if i want at least a 1/2 complete band. Anyway, I play lead, and sometimes when im doing some tremolo riffs (all the time) I start getting all shaky and i cant control my pace. This results in my tremolo coming out as some shitty ass unsteady notes. It sucks, but I think im getting better. I think the best remedy is experience. The more you do it, the better you will be at it. Im hoping that works for me anyway... For now i record vocals separately, I cant imagine the pressure when I have to do both, though ive done it on my own, In fron of crowds I'll be fuckin shitty!

When you play live, make sure that you have a few supportive non-band member friends up front that you feel good singing to. If you start to get panicy then focus and sing only to them, make eye contact only with them. Your true friends will always know how well you can sing and will help bring it out of you. After time you will feel better about singing in front of others.
You must have bullet-proof self confidence up there. To hell with those few people that are waiting for you to choke on every note, they are only in envy that they are not were you are or they don't have the courage to be where you are at.
Believe in yourself and nothing can stop you.

Oh ! Thanks for reminding me of the thing I read that Les Paul himself was told. "Don't say you can't do something til you prove you can't." And if it's any consolation, Clapton didn't think he could sing either. Man, I wish I had his money for having a lousy voice. (I'm kidding of course. ) And if you think you can't sing listen to Joe Cocker, Tom Waits, the song "Louie, Louie" by the Kingsmen, or Janis Joplin. It's the heart and soul that does it. Lots of performers who've been at it for years still get nervous. Others don't. I used to ask Bob if he was before performances and he said he never did. But he's very conscientious singing even though he doesn't have a bad voice at all. I've heard him do a shit-ton of Tenacious D at the Satriani concert, "Heard It Through the Grapevine" by CCR and "She Drives Me Crazy" by Fine Young Cannibals in the car, and other than us cracking up, he sounded just fine!
I began writing more seriously after one person told me that he really liked a piece I wrote for him. He said someday you'll be a good writer. But then he corrected himself and said --you already are a writer.
If someone gives you a compliment like that, hold onto it for all it's worth and it will help you believe in yourself. I have saved comments to boost myself if I'm hitting a low spot and think I should give up especially if I get a lousy comment. But I know there are those that do enjoy it and I'm sure if you do the best you can to perfect what you do, you'll do well. We can't all do everything perfectly though. I'm lousy on guitar, but I get by. I think my real knack is in lyrics and that's just fine with me.

Sounds like my situation...Ive got me(lead guitar and hopefully vocals), my friend on rhythm and my drummer. I want to sing so we can start playing places once we're old enough. Even then, it wont be a complete line-up. All the singers suck ass around here. Our bass players a lil older and is always gettin busted by the cops, lol.

Why are there age restrictions? When the boys played in bars underage, they just weren't allowed to drink (of course), but usually there were a few parents there. I think a couple were no admittance under 18, too. There was one place that one of the moms refused to let her son play at though and I agreed with her. They were getting busted upstairs sll the time for drugs or something. That was the only place they didn't play though.

I used to be all nervous and stuff about on stage permformance, but that has kind of gone away. I still get nervous when I'm drumming (I'm the drummer of a little 3 piece emo-metal-pop-punk-rock-whatever-band, and I sometimes have to drum for school performances and stuff), but that's because people think I'm good (I'm much better than most of them are), when I'm not (in particular, I lack control of my right foot (bass drum), especially when I get nervous (and the f*cking bd is miked up so anyone can hear my fuck ups....)), but I usually don't feel nervous playing the saxophone in any of the groups I'm in (a wind band, orchestra thingy, a big band, and a sax quartet/quintet). And lately, I've kind of sung a bit during rehearsal with the emprw-band, just for the hell of it. I kind of feel that it's not my problem if they don't like what I do, because 1) I'm doing this my way, and I can't be bothered to change that and 2) it's not overly serious, and 3) the other guys can't do it much better.
Just start singing all over the place. Going to school, in the (uhm...... food place thingy, where you have your lunch (assuming you go to school)), around the house, anywhere. Since you're doing clean vox, you've got an advantage. It feels stupid to walk around in the middle of some city growling, but quietly humming or singing something isn't as bad.
And just don't care if someone is better than you, or thinks (s)he is. Don't care. They may be better singers, that's possible, but would they fit in the band? Can they do the other stuff you do (I don't know you, so I don't know what to say here)?
Just get used to singing, first when you're all alone, then when you're with trusted friends, then when you're anywhere where people don't mind other people making a little bit of noise, and then in front of strangers who actually came there just to listen to you and your band.

I have a 2 piece band and a drum machin. i sing and lead, and the other dude just plays like backup. but as im walking around the house on my own, im always fucking growling. i have lots of time for myslef and when ever i get th time im growling and playing and writing lyrics.
i find it easy now because id invite friends over and we play but without a mic for me. i got used to it also because id be walking around growling along to shit all the fucking time.
ok, so look. the best advice isjust keep singing around your friends or at a band practice, give it all youve got. the worse that will happen is that they'll tell you to pick up your act. or theyll kick you out.
and if that happens you shouldnt be singing anyway

yeah, that's the painful way, just learn how to sing. (take a couple lessons maybe...)then you'll actually know how to get better and how to hit notes not usually in your range. basically, it just takes practice.

Oh, just learn all the parts to "The Lion Sleeps Tonight " and you'll have a 4 octave range. It beats the nut buster.
