Meshuggah downtune to F on their latest album but at least they have the common decency to play 8-string guitars.

How does its standard tuning go? g-c-e-a-d-g-b-e or f#-b-e-a-d-g-b-e?

Lol. Metallife!..heh..
Anyhow, I know most of you guys have never heard my music(with the exception of a few here on the site), but most of my material is tuned anywhere between A and C. I have one tune called "Metamorphasized", where I play in drop G. And that tune is heavy as fuck!.lol.
But I stopped tuning that low for my music cause it just lacks sustain and doesn't sound to hot,etc.. Easy as hell to play fast and whatever , but I'd rather stick to A or B tuning for that matter.
Yeah, most of Mortician's music is G#. Though, some stuff is A flat or Even G on House by the Cemetary(Just checked it recently). Well, now that Mortician has a drummer, I hope that they can make tunes that or more than 1 and 2 minutes long! I know Napalm Death had some fast tunes back in the day(EG:Scum), but afterwards, their tunes got lengthier and more technical somewhat.

Dime always tunes standard or D. Its sounds like G because he uses his whammy pedal to lower it an octive or 2. Oh and you gusy arent cool unless you have a 9 string 36 fret ummm is it still a guitar?? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MEBWA%3AIT&rd=1

All my guitars are either tuned to Eb or E. It still sounds heavy as shit. I've experimented with lower tunings and I didn't like it.

No he doesn't. I've read in interviews that he tunes down more, cuz he was describing the string gauges that he uses for various tunings.

Yeah, they get them custom made but I can't remember by who. I don't think it's a big company, but a guy they know in Sweden who makes guitars.
I think the standard tuning of an 8-string could well be the latter you mention, with Meshuggah then dropping down a further half step. They used to play 7-strings tuned to Bb so this sounds very feasible. There's no way that I'd tune down to F on a 6-string: you'd need steel cables for strings!
I tune to B and drop to A depending on whether I'm playing Nile or not. If a song is in C tuning, I tend to just play it in B anyway.

yeah, i find d is fine for me, most songs i play (suffocation, malevolent creation) are in d or c#, i dont think half step makes a difference unless you've either got a picky ear or if you're actually playing the song in a band

Which one i got the rp200, it is pretty nice but the distortion sucks, and so does the downtune feature. It makes it sound like the guitar just shot up heroin.

I keep my KH-2 in standard cuz of the floyd, but i tune my warlock from anything to standard to B standard, and drop D to drop A (depending what gauge strings i have on it at the time). Am i the only person here who loves playing in different tunings? Variety in feel and sound is amazing. Plus u get much chunkier sounds on thicker strings, and smoother fatter leads, love it love it.
I don't remember what album it was talking about but it was in the past couple years. I know that his newer pantera stuff could go down as far as C# and his stuff with Damageplan is lower. Save Me is in drop B for example. I remember him saying that for standard he plays .046-.009, and for lower stuff he'd use .050 or .052-.009.

i play in all diiferent tunings as well, though i am starting to lean to more standard tunings. my tele stays in C# for now, until i get 10's to replace the 12's i have on it. my 7-string stays in standar with 10-56. my bari stays in b standard, with 13-18-28-40-50-60. i move all over on my tele though, only from d standard to c standard and drop-Bb because of my strings, but i love changing tunings, hell i have gone as low as F#-B-E-A-D-f#-b on my 7-string, and it stayed in perfect tune, as well, i just couldnt do any chords on the lowest 2 strings.

All about regular tuning here, though I used to experiement with others, largely to play along with various death metal CDs.
If I really feel the need to have a lower tuning, that's when I break out ye olde 7-string. ^^;;

I usually have my guitars at standard tuning, both 6 and 7 string. The lowest I've tuned my 7 sting to was G, out of curiosity and to see what Dueling Banjoes would sound like that downtuned. I think I'll just stick to standard tuning.
Ohh, and 9 strings is nothing.

Those images are sick! I might have to get me one of those phazebrawide guitars. Might need a strong strap for that one.
On the tuning side, for metal I tune everything down to D then the drop C on some songs (which is what the rest of the band also tune to) however I just got a 7 string which is tuned down a tone with a low G.

Who said it was required? But it is a fact that tones are different when downtuned and played on heavier strings, scientifically a fact. I say to hell with staying in the same spot.

The guy that makes Meshuggah´s 8 string guitars is called Fredrik Nevborn, and his company is called Nevborn Guitars.
The guitar model name is Sleipner XL and cost about $3000 depends on your setup

I think Meshuggah could have some decent music. Though, I would never buy any of their cds. Their not bad musicians. Just not my style.

Yeah, their sense of time structure is very unique and one of the reasons as to why I listen to them. Also, Frederick Thordendal is an amazing guitarist - his leads are awesome.

changing tunings for every differennt song pisses me off and makes me not want to play. I just put some new strings on my LP. earnie ball super slinkies 42,32,24,16,11,9 They're so tiny. Amazing sustain in E and drop D.

Soundgarden are one of the worst bands in the world for that, especially on Badmotorfinger and Superunknown.

Then also remember that because one downtunes, they are not necessarily just trying to be heavy but with a lack of talent.

heavy is all about the way you play, not your tuning, not what gauge your strings are, and not what kind of distortion you have. tuning down has never sounder any heavier to me than standard does, it sounds different, you can do things while tunedowned that you cant while in standard, esp. if you use very thin strings, you can do like 4 and 5 step bends.
i am leaning more towards using standard now a days, merely for the ease of playing with other people.

I re-tuned my Ibanez ex last night with 13-56's. Yeah, Floyd roses can be a real pain in the ass. It took me maybe around 15 minutes to string it up alltogether. For this purpose, I'm tabbing out Mortician, Morbid Angel, and anything other thats tuned between B and G.
Fuckin Jazz strings.lol..yeah, I might as well almost play bass...heh..that's ok though, I'll stick to guitar for the time being.
And MoonRaven, I agree with you 100% on the tuning aspect. Look at Dimmu Borgir, standard tuning, with a real nice heavy sound. That's just one example. I like low tuning probably just cause I've been playing it for a long time.

It depends on how you play your guitar, and witch cords you use.
I have been using 13-56's jazz strings nearley from the day i got my guitar...well ok, the the strings on it was 09, fucking thin hate that shit, but after i broke all the strings i began to use the 13´s.

All tunings are decent
G tuning I used .13 D'Addarios for that. Sounded decent, and the strings werent too loose. G tuning sounds fuckin sick if you adjust your low and mid ranges right, and the tone on the pedal.
