apart from that u have to do it when u palm mute high strings in solos anyways i would also recommend doing it everytime because im am faster with resting my palm on the bridge. and apart from speed u can shave the accents wich allows you to have the full control over the notes. but i anyways i have to admit that i dont have my palm on the bridge all the time excpeacially not when im sweeping.
hope that helps u out.

I actually had to pick my guitar up to see.....
and i notice that i keep my hand very close ubove the bridge but dont actually touch it. I keep it close so i can get my hand back on the bridge faster to do pm's and harmonics and shit. A les paul bridge isnt exactly the most comfortably one either so you cant really keep it on there all the time. It depends what your playing i guess

Don't think, play. Do what is most conmfortable for you, don't try and reason it.

i dont see how i could play any other way i mean the volume knob is only like a inch away from the bottom string under the bridge pick up id be hitting it if i tryed to pick any other way, i rest my palm lightly above where the strings are locked in (floyd rose floating bridge) it does n't seem to add any extra tone or anything

When I shred, I pick really close to the fretboard. This is just more comfortable for me. Then of course when Im doing a palm muted solo, then my right hand will be on the bridge.

My recommendation is that you not do it, except in the obvious case where you have to (palm-muting). I did it for a couple years, and when I really focused on getting faster, it actually caused me hand pain because of the angle where my wrist was bent. I also had a tendency to brush across shit that shouldn't have been brushed across, causing strings to ring. I switched to floating above the bridge and lightly resting my pinky next to the high string, and I'm convinced it's a much better way to play.

depends on what you're doing. When I play lead I always mute the strings I'm not picking with my picking hand by lightly resting it near the bridge.

When I rest my hand on the bridge, I have a harder time playing fast riffs on the E and A strings, as I have to curl my hand into an awkward position.

It is so true!
Just watch Marty Friedman from Megadeth. He's got such an unique hand position with is wrist all croocked.
Still, he rocks!

i used to read my palm on the bridge, when i had a guitar with a flating bridge, but then i bought a new one with a floyd rose, thus i couldnt do it any more, and had to restyle my technique, my suggestion is to avoid it if you can

I just rest my hand on the low E string when playing solos. Why the hell would you want to palm mute a solo?

I think it's obvious that if you lay your hand on the bridge, you won't be able to play as fast wether it's playing fast palm muted picking or soloing. I do like what dead does....don't even think about it. Only do what's necessary and vice versa. End of story.

arpeggios arent necessarily palm muted u just mute the note a bit after u have played it. That is not necessarily palm muting. If you can do arpeggios fast enough you dont have to do this at all. And i've never really tried palm muting solos, but i guess i will have too.

Hahaha this is kinda fucked up, but the only thing I think about when Im playing is that little note bend then spin/ turn away from the camera thing Jeff Hanneman does after the first solo in the War Ensamble Video.....
