just a question about the whole blackmetal deal...
How do you define blackmetal ?
Is it more about the music or the lyrics ?
If a bands songs are more about death/suicide/angst than satanism is it still blackmetal if it sounds like maybe mayhem or burzum ?
I have read different things everywhere about this and people tend to give different answers everytime..Some say it is only about the lyrics and vice versa...
Not that one should change the way he plays or the lyrics he makes but it is still very anoying not knowing really how to classify bands without getting loads of shit thrown at your face...

It is definately about the music. The lyrics are not a factor in deciding the style of music. I dont know who would say that. Think about this... You hear a band playing, black metal, does it matter what the singer is saying? I wouldnt think so, youre hearing black metal. Now, if you heard the next linkin park song with lyrics that are black metal, would you say they are now black metal. I think not.
Isnt this more of a "chit chat" thread?

Yeah, me, too. That was an excellent way to explain it.
But I'd say the thread could go either place. Since their are lyricists here I'd say it was fine to ask here. And it seems less "warlike" here most of the time ! heehee

I think that they have to go hand in hand, the music and the lyrics. I could be playing a blackmetal type riff and sing about summertime and happiness and it'd sound nothing like a blackmetal song. Either that or i dont think its the words but the way it is sung.

I know it isn't black metal , but when I hear Type O Negative do "Summer Breeze" it just sounds sooo weird!! I grew up with Seals and Crofts doing that light and airy and it took me awhile to get used to 'O' doing it their way.
And Faith Hill doing Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart" makes me cringe. (shivers at the thought)

Well to me black metal is about music and lyrics. They have to work together to create an atmosphear wich makes it black metal. bands such as old mans child, dimmu and cradle don't really create that atmosphere because the music and lyrics seem too.... just normal metal...... i don't see them as BM at all, it's just my opinion though. if there was black metal with lyrics about flowers and loving each other, then it wouldn;t really create the same atmosphere and mystery as say singing about ancient germanic religions and stuff like that.

you can't really hear what they sing anyway, but as BM goes, it's quite simple to hear what songs have meaning and stuff, and wich stuff is just false
