sounds a lot like Wolf's Lair Abyss.Maniac's vocals are
better than other records but the lyrics aren't so good.
What's your opinion?

GDOW was a piece of shit. One of the WORST records in the history of black metal. Although "Chimera" is better stuff than GDOW, but not even close to the true Mayhem's (w/ Euronymous) stuff. Mayhem IS dead!! Admid that!! Don't waste your money to this, there's much better black metal releases out now.

(even better than De Mysteriis...)
I've noticed a few things in Chimera :
the sound of the bass drum is annoying(fucking triggers!),
the first riff of Dark Night Of The Soul
is almost identical to a Thorns riff(and most of the riffs
sound like Thorns leftovers) also the first riff of Rape Humanity with
Pride sounds a lot like a riff from Storm Of The Light's Bane,
Maniac's vocals are better than his usual "squeal like a pig"
vocals but they became too common,at least before
you knew it was Maniac singing,now it could be any
black metal singer(except from the parts where he tries
different things with his voice).
I still like the album but it's not even close to GDOW or
Wolf's Lair Abyss

Mayhem is no longer the same band they once were. The lineup is all screwed up. I think they should change the name.

I tend to agree. Mayhem is long dead.

Chimera is not that good.

I always thought Mayhem sucked.. Some songs are pretty cool but most of it is just slow, retarded, badly recorded, pointless, and unstructured. BTw, Mayhem with Euro sounded worse than Mayhem without Euro.

In case that you haven't heard, bad, harsh and primitive recording belong to the black metal music to make the dark athmosphere also slow and sometimes even monotonic riffing also makes that. Maybe in DEATH-metal where they really don't appreciate athmosphere, this is upside down. One of the main principles in black metal is to make the dark athmosphere or dark feelings into the music (not in all bm).

Newer Mayhem "advanced" into next level, to make shit music. It lost the feelings of the black metal by that. Other exsamples: Dimmu Borgir (Enthrone->), Emperor (IX..->) etc..

Old Emperor was ferocious and so was Marduk, but the newer black metal metal is much better because it is more extreme and full of blast beats, and blast beats add an element of agression to the music just like u were talking about Black MEtal being agressive, now days in order to have black metal sound agressive guitars need to be well recorded, powerful, and really fast.

They do get pretty insane on some songs, the song Night Of Long Knifes has some insane lyrics about slashing angels and shit, its fucking tight. And alot of the blasting songs are fucking awesome.

Chimera is quite good.. But not the Black metal I really listen to.
Blasphemer suck so big time that he has to come up with strange riffs in strange orders because he can't make a simple riff who is good enough to go at least 8 times.

Black metal should not be well recorded.. Use old analog recorders!
And not play to fast.

I thought it was a Killer Album man. Maybe not the Black Metal you guys have grown to love, but certainly lots of finesse and awesome riffing. I've never been one for Black Metal in the first place though. The grainy production just kills off any atmosphere the songs might have given me, if I could get past the monotonous riffing, that is. I've always loved the refined and polished sounds of Immortal and Emperor.

Anyway, whats the point of Atmosphere without Virtuosity?

I think this album is awesome,I don't care if it isn't"troo"or whatever.like it better than DMDS actually.

I like Chimera, took some getting use to but apart from a few guitar parts, it is good. I will not even try to compare it with any other of Mayhem's recordings, but it's nowhere near the brilliance of early Mayhem. Personally, GDOW is not to my liking, yet again I listened to it once, became bored stiff and gave it back to the person I was borrowing it off.
As for whoever said about them changing there name, I can't remember who it was, I once thought they should. But, if you think about it, the original member is still there. Necro Butcher, and as long as he is still there, then Mayhem will always remain Mayhem, whether by music or name alone.
