"Dogwood"

Touch me with the warmth of spring.
My branches with a lilac's scented kiss
Carried by an eastern breeze
Drifting upon each twig.

I am the dogwood growing in the shelter of the oak--
Protected from the elements that introduce summer.
The wind blows through my leaves, shimmering.
The sun beats down on blossoms -
Awakening flowers so pale, so pure
Yet brazenly smiling with dappled light upon me.

Glowing white in moonbeams at midnight.
Bright as the stars.
My petals fall but still I'm near.
Moss at my roots, soft as a pillow
Awaiting to comfort a poet's dreams.
