Denmark - Italy is on now, Denmark is doing really good IMO, Italy's trident (Del Piero, Vieri, Totti) isnt doing shit, its half time now but it could still go either way.

bah ... Denmar - Italy was a bit boring but I was surprised of Denmark ...they played well and Italy played really bad I think. Only Buffon made a good game. He saved Italy one point!
And now Holland : Germany
I agree Def, a draw is the most possible thing what could happen ! In the last matches germany and also holland played not really good. So, a penalty could bring the win for one of the teams. today, I heard in the radio germany will play with 4 defenders and only one forward (don't forget Ballack, he likes to go up ) . Tomorrow, I will watch the game with my friends in pub and we all know that germany can be happy about 1 point against holland.
But I don't forget the rivalry and because of that i say: It will be a very hard and close match (or holland will blame germany xD) and the germans will win luckily!

Yup, its either gonna be a boring match, or an asswhooping for Germany IF Holland plays its own game with the egocentric stuff going on.
all the friendly matches don't mean shit, I mean, we didnt put in our best players and in some games we had more then 7 subsitutions, thats just eh, bullshit. you can't win a game without a steady team, replacing more then 7 people in the team just doesn't work, but our coach wanted everyone to get some playing time.
Germany will probably try to defend a lot since they don't have a lot of good strikers, we have a load of strikers, so that would be evening out the obvious, but be aware of our new kids on the block on the midfield! (van der Vaart and Sneyder)
anyways, I'll be off to the pub too, I hope its gonna be a good match, its gonna be exciting anyways,
viel gluck!

ROONEY!!!!!!!! Told you he'd play well
Fuck, I've been in hiding! To lose is bad enough, but to lose to the French? I couldn't show my face!
France were exceptionally lucky and the only reasons that England lost are David Beckham's missed penalty and Stevie G's bad backpass. Zidane is awesome though - best player in the world by miles. We'll meet France again in the final and get our revenge, [evil_laugh]mwhahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha[/evil_laugh]!
Just saw the Holland-Germany game and it was quite good after the first 20 minutes. Holland looked a little disappointing but I was surprised at how well Germany played. They were a bit lucky with the cross that turned into a goal but I think a draw was a fair result. I've said all along that they deliberately play bad in the warm up games so that everybody underestimates them! I think it worked too, hahaha! That group is going to be very close...
I'm looking forward to the Spain game tomorrow - they're a good side to watch so it should be entertaining - and of course England on Thursday. We should beat Switzerland - I saw the Swiss play Croatia and I wasn't impressed. If we play like we did against France (for 95 minutes instead of 90 this time!) then we will beat them no problem.
I love football in the summer!

just got back from the pub, its like 1:30 now. had some trouble finding my front door :P
Ok, my analysis:
the base team was crap, I mean what the fuck, Andy Van Der Meyde????
3 LEFTY Midfielders??!?
the first half was super shyte, there was a big hole on the midfield on the right side (duuuuh, 3 lefty midfielders...)
and Van Nistelrooy was isolated because no one gave him a decent pass (Except in the first 10 minutes)
then the first goal came, not a error from Van Der Sar but just poor defending and one lucky german, though they really deserved the goal because they played with much more discipline.
After the first half, Overmars and Sneyder came in, Overmars ran circles around the german defence, especially his man, the german number 3. Overmars did a great job IMO, for an old man he sure played 3 times better then Van Der Meyde. (who shouldn't even be in the team)
Sneyder was a good impulce in the midfield, but he really didn't shine as much as expected (he played a superb match against scotland, 6-0)
when van Hooijdonk came on the whole game changed, it was the impulce the game needed for us, suddenly there was a treath and some chances where created. the last 20 minutes or so Holland was finally getting back into the game and got the equalizer, beautiful finishing by RVN.
conclusion: not a really good match, but entertaining in the pub (all hell broke loose)
Holland played a really bad first half with a really, really bad base team, davids wasn't fit and it showed too, plus the other things that Ive mentioned above, but I guess the coach just wanted to try out a single striker approach with van nistelrooy. bad idea.
Second half was still not super but Overmars did really well and there was some life brought back in the team, in my opinion they deserved the equalizer.
Kahn did a really good job keeping, especially on the high balls, he had some really good saved. (van der Sar didn't see much action at all, but he did ok.)
the Germans, meh, they played with more discipline than us, but I don't like the cowardly approach they have, all they do is defend and wait for a counter and dead game moments like free kicks and corners. They did play as a team, which we failed to do in the first half.
anyways, I guess its a fair way to end a game, if Holland had won with a free kick from van Hooijdonk or something, it wouldn't have been a deserved win.
I hope we get Kluivert back on the field next time and possibly give Makaay a shot.
and ofcourse Sneyder, Overmars and Robben in the base (we had Heitinga for Robben right now, Robben is still recovering from an injury.)
anyways, thats my thoughts on the game, I hope we've learned something from it as a team and I hope for a killer game against the Czechs on Saturday.
I'm off to bed, if it would stop spining around

yeah ...the pub was so full ... I never saw it so full like this and u can imagine how the ambience was after this "wonderful" ( ) freekick of Thorsten Frings ! After this goal ...we were singing all the time! But after the 1:1 it was quite. But I am happy. The germans played better than in the last 5 matches I think. An finally the score 1:1 is ok.
If germany wins their next match and holland too, both teams will get a good chance to reach the next round.

Yup, let's meet up again in the finals
yeah, we had a full pub too, the first 10 minutes where loud, the rest not, after 1-1 (fantastic goal IMO) the whole place went crazy and everyone sang 'Jetzt geht loss!!!' haha
first half = germany, second half = holland.
so I guess 1-1 would be fair, I didn't think either of the teams was better then the other, but the germans played really well IMO, really strong in their defence.
Johnmansley, that guy was Rooney, yeah, he played a great game, really agressive and powerfull player to watch, good impulce for the english team, I was impressed with England overall, I hope they get far in the tournament. can't say the same about the French.

Does anybody in Europe actually like the French?! I thought it was just the British who hated them?
I hope England go far too. It would be good to meet the Dutch along the way because that would be one hell of a game. It's always a good atmosphere when the Dutch play as they are always in full voice and dressed in orange!
Just seen the Spain v Greece game and Spain should have won. What's up with Raul? He missed a sitter in the second half and didn't look his usual self. Joaquin was brilliant when he came on though - this kid is going to be fantastic.
The Russia v Portugal game is currently 1-0 to Portugal with Maniche getting the goal.
PS: What does 'Jetzt geht loss' mean?

'lets get it on' or atleast something along that lines
Russia's goalie got sent off, man was het ever unlucky, he sorta fell on the ball?!
those russians fight like a bunch of crazy ivan's though! I hope they get back in it! (tough chance, but hey )
and no, nobody in Europe likes the French, except for the French! they love themselves enough for the whole of Europe! haha chauvenistic bastards!
yeah, England - Holland would be a great game, good atmosphere for sure, plus we'de see some quality soccer! (though England is in much better shape at the moment then us, but I think Holland will grow in the tournament, remember '88 )
And yeah, we do have great supporters, if you saw germany-holland, it was all orange, it looked pretty cool, but we needed the support too LOL, first half was shiiit!
Greece is a hell of a surprise to me, the Portugese have to watch out or they'll be knocked out in their group, that would be silly, never ever has a host country been defeated in the first round!

Greece go through from group A after Portugal beat Russia 2-0. So now it's a straight fight between Portugal and Spain - what a match that's going to be!
Greece have been a surprise package in this tournament. Even though they've had good results in the past 2 years or so, they've still surprised me. I think they have the potential to emulate Turkey and make giant strides to becoming a feared footballing nation - they certainly have the talent to do so.
I think that except for the Croatia-Switzerland game it has been a very entertaining Championship up to now. May it continue to the very last kick!

Oh lucky Portugal ! That was nor red card for the russian keeper, I think.
So Russia is out and I think Portugal is out too ! Spain and Greece are in the next round. I don't think Portugal will win against Spain.

you betcha! they have a lot of rivalry! just like holland and germany have!
my bet is on Portugal, to be on opposite sides to our german sodo-friend right here
Figo made the game today IMO, but Ronaldo was good. all in all, they didn't really leave a great impression, Spain played crap too if you ask me, but I think Portugal has more pressure and better players at this moment, if they can utilize that, they'll beat Spain.
that red card for the russian keeper was bullshit, but the ref couldn't see it from his positition so his assumption is logical, either lose his job quickly or save his own ass, lol. most refs would have given him a red card anyways, though the keeper was really, really unlucky, he sorta fell on the ball and tried to avoid it later, he knew what he was doing and in the replays of the whole event you could see it wasn't hands.
we've got Holland - Croatia on saturday and the whole team has been sorted now, our coach is under extreme pressure for his errors with the team against germany, the base team was crap and Makaay was on the bench.
as for Greece, I see them doing a good job untill now, but I don't know how they will do against a well oiled England/France/Holland/Italy, I doubt they'll get pass the semi's.
Sweden made an impression on me though, Ibrahimovic (ajax) and Larsson did great.
England is going to get far too, I'm sure they'll progress more in the tournament, England - France looked really promising, there was just a little edge missing.

Yeah, I think it's great having a thread on footy. I never thought we'd make it this far: 220+ posts!
Well, England beat Switzerland 3-0 and Rooney scored two good goals. His second should go down as an own goal really, but I'm not complaining! I was delighted that Stevie G scored, especially after his bad back pass led to the penalty against France. I think we have to improve though - we aren't going to win the tournament if we keep playing so negatively.
There are going to be a lot of interesting final group matches this year - especially: Spain/Portugal and the Sweden/Denmark/Italy group.

I have no idea, the new players are getting a chance, I heard... if they do, they'de better do well, or go home.
its one of the two choices but my guess is that they are going to do well if they use some of the new/young players like Sneyder, Van der Vaart, Makaay and especially Robben...
we'll see. if they don't play well, they're off.
talked to some English blokes again at my work, cool guys, they're still not over it though, hehe, but everybody loves Rooney all of a sudden.
oh... and don't call a Scot an Englishman, its as bad as calling a dutchy a jerry

Agreed.
but our coach's head is going to fly... he took out Robben who was our best player !
and we where thorougly rimmed up the ass by that fucking referee, he had shit in his eyes! heitinga was sent of whilst he didnt even touched nedved.
Lucky Czechs though, bad decisions by our coach, hes not going to be our coach for long lol, the public want his head...
I hope Cruyf or Van Basten wants to coach the national team, we've got enough good players but never bring out the potential. maybe because we never had a good coach

I did nothing but drink. lol, it was fucking sad, they hit the post 3 times and where robbed of a penalty twice.
then our coach decides he want to fuck us over himself, the public wants his head now!
Anyways, good going Portugal, I did expect them to win because of the huge pressure and all, I hope they take out France. damn France are a bunch of homos.

hah, well at least you're going through guys! congratulations!
you deserve it though, more then the Czechs, those bastards bought off the referee. we where robbed of two penalty's and got one of our defenders send of for nothing (Nedved made a schwalbe.)
you're playing against a B-team Czechia, the good players aren't playing because they want to rest for the rest of the tournament.
ah well, if you DO lose, and we win from Latvia, we're through, but I'm not expecting that, in the end we fucked ourself up because our coach decided to rim us up the ass, just like the referee did. (taking out the best player in the field for a slow defender, what the hell?)
everybody is screaming for his head now, which is good, we need a decent coach.
hey, is that Rudi available? man, that would be cool

Latvia plays with 8 defenders ! It will be hard to score for holland ! On wednesday I will go in pub and watch the match against Czechia. I hope we win but I am not sure ! If we want to win we have to score but our forwards can't score, so let's hope our midfield will do it !

lol, yeah that Kuriany dude or something, he played handball against holland, what a homo
Latvia plays with 8 defenders? huh? 4-4-1 and a libero or something? ah well, it doesn't really matter much since we're allready halfway on the plane home
at least we went out with a bang, it was a great match against the Czechs, shame they gave it away, looking on the bright side, at least we'll get another coach next WC

that was a joke because Latvia plays really defense ... when the german attecked they stand with 4 player in the penalty area and 4 other in front of it!

don't forget portugal has the home advantage and a lot at stake. I think England has a disadvantage over there, though they are the better team at the moment.
I saw Latvia images on the tv yesterday, lol, they're even worse then Germany, they're even more defending!

Hahaha, definitely a fix! But hey, Italy are out so no harm done, hehehe.
After tonight's games (Holland 3-0 Latvia, Germany 1-2 Czech Republic Reserves) the quarter-finals are:
QF1: France v Greece
QF2: England v Portugal
QF3: Sweden v Holland
QF4: Czech Republic v Denmark
Then the semi-finals will be:
Winner of QF1 v Winner of QF4
Winner of QF2 v Winner of QF3
Hey Def, see you in the semi-finals for England v Holland!

schade deutchland alles ist forbei!
what a game, first half was great, we should have had the penatly earlier on, two times, but the third time was just the little sum for the referee, no trouble there for van Nistelrooy
Second strike, same story, ofcourse the pass from Robben and the finish from van Nistelrooy.
second half was not so good IMO! but we had 20.000 fans in the Braga stadion cheering for the Czechs, we could hear in on the tv, CZECHIAAAAA OLE OLE!!!!!!
haha, great!
the coach took out van Nistelrooy, meh, I didn't really agree, but changing van der Meyde for Overmars is what I would have done (see previous posts!!!!!)
Makaay showing his quality with an excellent goal.
when it was 3-0 and 2-1 for the Czechs the whole country here went mad, man, people where throwing orange paint into the fountains in the city and there where people lighting those stadion flares in bright orange!
and ofcourse everybody was pissed
had a great time, we saw an interview with Galasek, one of the only Czech a-players that played in the match, he said he played for Holland after their great game against their team, now thats some cool stuff huh!
(don't forget Galasek plays for Ajax Amsterdam, but hey )
Aleksandrs Starkovs the national coach from Latvia praised our team and congratulated us, he wished us the best of luck! thank you Latvia
Frank De Boer, the old guy from holland which nobody would have expected to make a comebacked thanked our Czech friends and said he's back for good now, what surprised me was that he was team leader today and not cocu!!
JUSTICE!
even the german television said it, the Dutch deserved to go through after playing an attractive but unlucky game against the czechs and a bad game against germany.
Germany only scored twice this championship,
Rooney is tied with Van Nistelrooy from off this day! 4 goals in 3 matches...
Sweden - Holland is going to be great, don't forget that a lot of the dutch players know Ibrahimovic (especially van der vaart and sneyder who play for Ajax with him)
but the Swedish have played great games lately, so its going to be exciting!
lets hope our coach doesn't fuck up this time, I think he did the right thing, after the victory he went straight down into the catacombs, proving he had beaten the press this time around. though we really deserved better matches, and we needed Van Hooijdonk today, he did pull it off this time.
Portugal - Engeland is going to be a great game, I'll be heading down the pub for this one with the english lads from my work.
I hear my neighbours singing ''JETZT GEHT LOSS!!!'' so I'm heading over there to have another celebration pint!!!!! best of luck against the Portugese tomorrow England
see you in the semi-finals that would ensure a great game huh!!!
france has got an easy one, if they go against the czechs, we where screwed in the match against them, I'm pretty sure we'de rather play against both the czechs and the french then against england, because if theres one country that has done really well, its england, not france, not the czechs and certainly not denmark IMO!

I've got a few points about the England v Portugal game:
1. Portugal are a team of pathetic diving cheats. If they had their way, football would be a non-contact sport. Actually, football is a non-contact sport for them already but they still get the free-kicks anyhow.
2. The referee was biased, this is a fact. How Campbell's goal was ruled out because Ricardo ran into John Terry is beyond me.
3. For all Portugal's possession I never thought England were at risk until Postiga actually scored. Portugal couldn't get beyond our defense and the best efforts they had were long shots and difficult headers from crosses.
4. David James is shit and the rest of the England team know it too.
5. For England, David Beckham has been anonymous for the past 3 years and should be stripped of the captaincy.
Good luck Portugal - you fucking cheats.
PS- I'm not bitter, hahaha!

You forgot that Rooney had to leave the match after 20 minutes or something like this !
Btw, I was the whole game for portugal and they played really not bad !

the brittish gossippress got beckham in the national team. He shouldn't be there (except for some of his freekicks, but van hooijdonk does them better)

well now the English know what it is to be cheated we had the same thing against the Czechs, we where robbed.
however, Portugal played a stronger overall game IMO, the extra time was all portugal, England was lucky with the equalizer (poor portugese defending)
the penaltys... well as a dutchman you'de know I'm no expert, since we allways lose with penatlys (against brasil, italy, etc) Beckham shot it like Seedorf did back in the day, bummer for him.
the portugese keeper was reallllly confident, damn that kick was the best one yet, he deserve a statue. though, I'm sad England is out, I would have liked to see Holland play against England in the finals...

Yes, I agree, the better team did win so I can't complain really. We just sat back and played for a 1-0 win as soon as we scored. This was always going to fail because if you give Portugal enough of the ball and fail to put pressure on them, they will hurt you eventually. And they did. I agree with Sodomaniac, as soon as Rooney went off we lost all confidence in our ability to attack.
It's a shame because I really thought that if we had beaten Portugal that England would have won the tournament. That's why I'm so bitter and twisted right now, haha!
Doc: I completely agree. People have believed the hype surrounding him for far too long and in the last couple of years even Beckham himself has started to believe it. I can't see how anybody can rate him as one of the best footballers in Europe: he has no skill, pace or leadership, he can't head the ball and doesn't know how to defend. Oh, and he can't take penalties! The only thing going for him is his crossing and free kicks but even those areas of his game have got worse over the last 2-3 years.
So basically, Beckham is an average footballer who can take a good free kick every 6 months. And people call him world class. *shakes head in disbelief*

I must be psychic...
Well done Greece! I watched the game and you fully deserved it - France were awful! So much for me having France in the sweep - I truly hate those French bastards more than ever now!
Congrats also to Holland who beat Sweden tonight. Considering that it was 0-0 it was a very good game. Sweden were unlucky though as they hit the bar and the post in extra time but it was a great save from Van Der Sar in the penalty shoot out. Good job he's 6"6'!

Def, do you think Holland will win this cup ?
Roy Makaay said before the cup started: We are going to Portugal and we will win this cup!
Btw Roy Makaay, in the half time of the extened time he left the field without talking to a referee before. Normally this is not allowed and he had to get a yellow card! And in the match in got a yellow card. That means he had to get a red card! But he hadn't and he made a goal in the penalties ! Oh lucky Holland!

pfff, that was in the half time, and he had to piss who cares!
Thats just one of those german things to bitch and moan about things like that, our coach asked the ref, so he knew about it. man this is just like reading that crap paper 'bild', bitter bitter germans
doesn't matter anyway, our next penalty taker in his place would be Stam, and he's a sure scorer when it comes to penalties.
win the cup? I don't think so, we're playing against Portugal, as a host country they have a big advantage, theres 50.000 people in that stadium and only 15-20.000 dutch, the portugese have the rest of the seats.
Though, the pressure is on the portugese, and not on us.

Haha! When England got knocked out they put a picture of Beckham on the front with the word 'Beckham' as the headline. The only thing is that 'Beck' was crossed out and underneath was written 'Depp'. Apparantly the German word Deppham means 'retard'! Hahaha! *sighs* So true...

Czech's owned Denmark.
oh how I wish for a Holland - Czech finals. we want revenge, after beeing rimmed by the ref, our coach and finally the czechs, we gave away our victory last match against them, we won't do that again
though, Portugal is a much better opponent.... we'll see, at least we made the semi-finals!

yeah I think the Czech Rep is in the final. For Greece it will be a very had match.
It would be funny if Portugal vs. Holland would be decide in the penalties !

but if it will be, wow that should be intense though I think the portugese have the edge!
the Czechs have an easy match against greece IMO!! Greece isn't that good but at least they play as a collective...

They should complete the exchange and get a Scottish coach! Walter Smith, maybe? If anyone can drive the final nail into German football then it is him, hehe!
Seriously, I reckon they'll rescue Matthaus from the Hungary job, especially after he masterminded the recent win against Germany. And besides, he's, er, Hungary for success... *whinces at bad pun*

maybe they can get the coach from Greece, hes german too. (renhagel or something?)
at least they got through the group round
so John, you think the dutch stand a chance against portugal? it would be a big surprise if we won it. we are eager for revenge at the czechs, after giving away 2-0... our coach won't make stupid substitutions again, did you see Robben play against Sweden? constantly passing both his markers with tricks, he's one hell of a player!

The coach of Greece is called Otto Rehagel but I don't think he will be the next coach. I think it will be Ottmar Hitzfeld, ex-coach from Borussia Dortmund and Bayern München! Two teams you all know! I'm sure.

I think we will lose
by the Czechs(of course that's what I
thought of the games against Portugal and France)
and Holland will lose by Portugal.
In the end I think Czech Rep will win the Euro.
Anyway if we go to the final I'll probably go to
Portugal to watch it

we'll see
the Czechs, well, if we get a final against them, we'll surely have our revenge!
Portugal is a more difficult team to play against.
Greece, well I don't think they've got any star players, but at least they play as a team, thats how they got this far. and ofcourse France played a really, really poor game against them. though Greece is the surprise of this Euro 2004 so far!!!

Yeah, I think you have a good chance of beating them - especially if Robben continues his good form. He's looked by far the best player for Holland and Chelsea have got a top quality player for next season. I think he's been the best winger in the tournament.
Portugal's problem is that they don't really have a striker that will score a lot of goals. Of course, Holland have Van Nistelrooy so they have the edge in that department. Holland also have a better 'keeper but Portugal have got the better midfield - maybe not individually, but as a collective their midfield works very well.
It's going to be close but I'm going to predict a narrow Holland win - maybe even penalties again! If Holland attack them and don't sit back (like England did) then they can definitely win.

*nods*
if they sit back, they're toast. but sometimes we make good comebacks from a bad start. I don't think we should relax but go straight for the attack, with Robben, Makaay, Van Nistelrooy and Van der Vaart up forward (van der Vaart as attacking midfielder)
Van Der Meyde is out against Portugal, he's had his chance but never played really well, Robben was allways dangerous and was really good at his one to one duels.
I hope Kluivert gets a chance to prove himself too, maybe at Van Nistelrooy's expence even, Kluivert is eager to prove himself, though I'm not sure if he's up to it, he still is Hollands' national team top scorer...
Chelsea was lucky with Robben, he's worth a lot more now
as for England, I think they lost a bit of edge when Rooney was taken off... or was that just me?
Beckham played shit, the whole tournament, thats sad.
Rooney reminds me of Gascoigne in his good days.

You mean he's fat? Hahahaha!
Yeah, a lot of pundits are making the same comaprison over here too. I think he's more like Alan Shearer though. The only difference is that Rooney has more skill than Shearer but Rooney isn't as good at heading.
I'd like to say the Dutch were unlucky tonight but, like against England, it would have been unfair for the Portuguese to lose. They were the better side and I've got a feeling that not even Satan's hellfire can stop them from winning the final. Along witht the Czechs they've been the best team in the tournament.
Oh well Def, you can join the rest of the losers now!

wow that was a crap game! fuck that referee, he was a bit too friendly for the portugese.
though we did play a bad match, Seedorf didn't get one ball right, Van der Sar, Davids and Stam played a solid game. we didn't deserve to win IMO, we didn't play really well and we didnt have Sneyder NOR Heitinga in this time, which was silly.
I don't know who will be our next coach, but I hope for Cruyf or van Basten.
the Czechs where lucky against holland, I think Portugal will win this eventually, at least we made it to the final four teams, even though we had a terrible coach, we've got a lot to look forward too in the future.
I'm going to grab some more pints now, I'm going to have a ball with the english this saturday
