Hi all

our drummer needs a 'silent drum' for practising during the week (the next couple of years).

We were thinking about pads (that's their name?) like the one Dereck Roddy uses in his video; those rubber plates that go like tac-tac-tac-tac

How much do they cost and can you actually get those in a shop? Because I've never seen any.

I was wondering if anyone here has ever used silent practice pads, the ones that go over your drum heads and cymbals. Do they really reduce the sound significantly? Do they affect the stick response alot? Do they last worth a fuck? I'm going to be getting a drum set soon, and my parents aren't too happy with that. I need a way where I can still practice and not obstruct the fam.

my roomate uses them, they definately work as far as silencing the drums go,i never used them myself tho

You still get some of the sound, and the most difficult to deal with is the cymals- the rubber pads make them feel like dustbin lids and don't dampen them at all.

As far as the stick response, its pretty lifelike for the toms, but its not identical, im sure an experienced dummer would comment more, but thats what i've found on my mates kit. Also, my mates bass drum pad broke in a week or so, so that wasn't too great.

Yeah, they work ok on the drums and cymbals, but I found mine a) didn't quieten the kick drum much anyway, and b) crumbled away to nothing in about a month.

What I'd like to do is build myself a kit from proper Billy Hyde type practice pads (with the threaded hole on the back) and some old cymbal stands, but I think it'd cost me almost as much as an electronic kit.

They have woven/nylon heads that feel a lot more realistic, and are near silent. The only downside is that you have to change the heads.

Hey, that's pretty cool, but I just want something to where I can play at night, or while someones watching t.v., but during the day jam the fuck out. Thanks for the reply though.

About those pads..well i'm from holland and
dont knwo the exact translation for those pads...but isn't that just a electric
Drum set??
i got one too and got two basses with it
but still acoustic sound way time better
i only have the other for practising at night
it works pretty good

Real Feel pad or a Moongel pad

over here in NZ they go for about 30 bucks or so, in the US that should translate to around 10-20
