Engl Savage 120 - death metal
Has anyone ever tried this amp out? I'm looking for a good amp suitable for brutal death metal in the vein of unique leader (deeds, pyaemia, disavowed, etc), and this amp along with the Mesa Recs and the VHT Pitbull UL looks very interesting...
Thanks

hell yeah. GREAT amp, imo. I really like Engls anyway, I use an engl preamp through a new peavey 50/50 poweramp into a marshall 1960b, I love engl's tone, its kinda orientated too metal/rock kinda stuff, I've tried the powerball and the savage too, loved them, if I ever need a top its gonna be an Engl. good stuff, I suggest you go out and be amazed for yourself

I'd choose the vht. It's about 2100-2400$ per head but i like the vht sound at high gain a bit more. It sounds more dynamic if u drive with very high gain. And apart from that i consider the eq of the vht to work better for the death stuff.
nontheless the engl kicks ass but pls forget about the mesas they suck imo!

mesa doesnt suck.... over priced or not, they are great amps.
but yes, i'd probably prefer a vht pittbull over a savage too. but the vht is going to cost alot more.
if you want the heaviest head ever... bogner uberschall, is all you need to know..... actually a bogner anything will get you amazing tone, but the uberschall has to be the best high gain head ever. i'd take a bogner over any vht, mesa, marshall, peavey, rivera, krank, engl, ashdown, ect.

in comparison to the engl savage mesas suck balls. but hey if u wanna sound like every freakin new metal band out there, damn YEAH! go for mesa tripple rectos.
i just laugh about players who spend their money in mesas. no brain=thx

well... mesa's do have their own sound, I like the triple recto and the nomad series.
their poweramps are good too but the 50.50 (old model) sounded a bit so-so to me so I went for a peavey 50/50 in combination with an engl preamp, I'm really happy with my current setup
Mesa is not crap, but its an acquired taste. I wouldn't buy one because I get bored of the high gain sounds really quickly, I'de rather get a Soldano SLO or something similair.

its a bit childish to say an amp sucks just because alot of numetal bands use them, because alot of non numetal bands also use them, and alot of the bands that do use them get good tone.
i'd probably go either way in a mesa-engl decision, but for right now i'm playing a mesa preamp and it rocks, i can get a good distortion or clean for any style of music, so i aint complaining.... but i'm going to be trading it in for a jmp-1 and some sort of valve effect proccessor, so i can control everything via midi and still get good tube tone. after i do that i'm going to save up for the h&k triamp which i've fallen deeply in love with .

diffrent sound= better sound
maybe im prejudiced cuz i know to many players who buy a mesa just becuz its a mesa and don realize that there are alota other amps arround which are tight amps and dont cost 3500$. they start playing... hey i go for metal.... turn up gain bass and trebble and got this standard shitty mesa sound. those guys should try diffrent things. i can get nearly the same sound for half of the price.
mesa is always meant to be THE label for metal amps but noone realizes that they are nothing but way! 2 expensive for what they got. maybe u know what i mean

Yup, but I guess some people just want to stick to that sound...
ofcourse theres better amps around for the price, and you're right about people not caring about those cuz they ain't mesa's. which is pretty stupid.
if I had 3500 to spend I sure as hell wouldn't buy a mesa, but that aside, they do have their own 'charme'

my used mesa vtwin rack preamp only costed like $300 american...... and it sounds great, but i'm going down the midi road with my rack setup, and not the mesa way either.
but then i'm going to get a triamp,an uberschall, and an a/b/y switch box for the most amazing tone on the fucking planet. to bad it'll cost me about $5,000.

Advice from Disavowed
Yo Xanthomatose,
I am a friend of Disavowed. And as a matter of fact the guitarist lives about 5 minutes away from my house. I have been fighting with him, discussing amplifiers. He has always said to me that Mesa Boogie & Engl is "kut". Kut is the Dutch word for "cunt". I think this description gives you an appropriate answer to your question. If you want to sound more like Pyaemia or Disavowed NEVER EVER use Mesa Boogie or ENGL!
What you should consider is trying a normal transistor amp combined with a Digitech effect processor.
For your information:
Daniel & Gerben are currently using a Rocktron Velocity 250 and a Digitech RP-12.
Ok now you’ve heard how it has been done. Your turn. Stop asking questions and start playing. Don’t waste your cash on a fucking overpriced amp and effect. Buy this kind of equipment and invest some time of how to get the right sound.
Cheerz,
David
