Time for a differnet forum....Whats better for playing heavy metal/death metal. Currently i have a Epiphone 6 String and an Ibanez 7 string that i use both constantly and love both their sounds. Ive been wanting to start a band also and couldnt decide which guitar i should use mostly (i could probablys use both sometimes but that would destroy this forum entirely ) so ill ask the people...Whats better? a 6-string or a 7-string

I would rather prefer the Epiphone because Flying V guitars are jsut toooo cool looking and slick but 7 strings can produce that more headbanging noise like Korn or something.

if you like your six, but like the heavier sound of your 7, you could always just get some thicker strings and tune your six to b, or whatever your 7 is tuned to.

Korn = nu-metal. Don't say you don't like them just becasue someone insults you for it. And you practically did say you liked them. If Korn makes you headbang then it means you dig what they are playing. And how you defended them up untill the Untouchables.

If you have a gutiar that looks nice and a guitar that plays much better, but dosen't look as nice...then obviously go with the guitar that plays better. No one gives a shit what your guitar looks like. The 7 string also offers 24 more notes.

id say six strings for me personally cause the neck on a 7 string is too fucking wide for me im sure i could get used to it if i had one but ill stick with 6 strings and of coarse the ocational 12-string
you can get pretty killer tones with a six string too it may not be as low, but listen to opeth thats a killer tone and its not even downtuned

a MUCH better example of "7-string guitar usage" would be Morbid Angel though

It depends on what kind of music you play. Personally, i play 2 different tunings without ever changing it. My RP7 has a downtuner so i dont have to fuck with my guitar. So i just put it down one step for SUM BR00TUL SHIT!!! Just kidding. But they have their advantages and disadvantages.

Jesus dude...i just started this forum to see what peeps like more, 6 or 7 strings but you had to blow it way out of proportion by starting the korn shit, and first off i used a REFERENCE to korn, saying i like korn and that are two completely sifferent things, and i spelt a name wrong jeeze shoot me..i like Nirvana's music i didnt say i like the lead vocalist/guitarist.

It also depends on your hands. One guitar may be more comfortable for you to use. I'd use that one.

As for me, I have what some might refer to as a 'mini-pinky'. My pinky finger is not very long at all. Its made it difficult to learn to use it often. To put this into reference, my pinky ends right before the last joint of my ring finger. Then my ring is slightly longer than my pointer, and my middle is longer than my ring.

I agree. Being able to go from standard tunning to B can make a song much more intense. The length of the neck really isn't that horrible, mabye a week or so and you won't even notice. You could always just switch of; get the best of both worlds.

you dont need a 7 string to get a heavy sound. Put a set of 60-11 strings on your 6-string and you got the same sound.

The question is are you gonna acually use all 7 strings... Ive seen kids with 7 strings that never played anything that needed a 7 string. I also think you have to approach the 7 string as a totally different intrument then a 6 string. Yhe sure their both guitars but a 7 string gives you much more expandability. If your gonna use a 7 string like korn does.. then use the 6 string and tune down.

I tend to use my 6-string more than my 7-string. But they both have their pro's and con's. I find it easier to play my 6 whereas the 7 offers more versatility (trying to learn 7-string sweeps is quite a challenge!). Anyway, if you can't make your mind up, just use both. That way, you'll have a diverse sound for your band.

I personally would use the 6-string, because I don't feel that I can utilize the added string. If I'd use the 7, I'd have it drop tuned (some of the stuff I play is dropped), and get 2 D-tunas for moving the high B string.

As far as I have seen, 7 string guitars are generally more common among shredders than metalheads. Which is quite "logical" as shredders are more about speed and sweeping and technical ability, while metalheads tend to go for brutality. (YES I KNOW I'M GENERALISING LIKE HELL HERE)

And about the korn stuff here, I'd say it'd be appropriate to point out to the fella that "we" don't consider KoRn to be metal, and then leave it. Really, that's not the point of this thread, is it?

ok, back to the topic: i think the 7 srting would fare better. why? because 1, it's a fucking ibanez.2, it has a double octave neck and an extra string. the epiphone is not only a peice of shit like all other epiphones, but it only has like what 21 maybe 22 frets?

if you want to play a six string song, ignore the 7th string. i playe a 7 string once. those things are BRUTAL. i love them. ibanez sure knows how to make a seven string guitar!

not only that, but ibanezes are known for there thin necks. the thin neck and the 24 frets allows for some nice soloing (unless you like the thicker necks), but yeah..
