Defretting your bass
Anyone tried that? I just bought a new bass and I'm really thinking about defretting my old Vantage bass... any tips on how I should do that?

I know a guy who tried doing that and he ended fucking it all up. He had to take it in and get it fixed by a professional.

How much do you value your Vantage? If it's just a piece of shit the go ahead, otherwise don't risk it. Someone once told me they took the frets off a useless bass by prying them off with a screwdriver. Good luck.

I know nothing about bass, but i do know that i wouldnt try that. Ask a professional before fucking with it. Well, it depends on if you care if you fuck it up.

Ya i wouldnt do it either. Your pickups arent made for a fretless so its probably gonna sound like shit. I think they use different strings too but i might be wrong. I would just sell the one you got and buy a fretless.... well actually i wouldn't want a fretless in the first place.

Its not that risky at all, they have grip/clamp tools that take all the effort out of it all you do is squeeze.

I'm guessing its a bolt-on, so buy a new neck. Or grind off teh fretboard and buy a new fretless fretboard.

I have the exact same tool and it doesn't work for me. The frets are just too small and I can't pull them out... I'm gonna check projectguitar.com, thanks BLS.

TAKE A METAL FILE AND FILE THEM DOWN THIS WAY THERE WONT BE A SLOT LEFT BY THE FRETS REMOVAL, IT WOULD BE A PAIN IN THE ASS BUT THE SMOOTHEST WAY TO DO IT OR JUST BUY ONE THAT MY 2 CENTS

The jaco way is just ripping the frets out and then filling hte holes, and finally put a layer of marine epoxy over the fretboard to resist string damage. btw only use flatwound strings.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the difference between flatwound and roundwound strings? I've only seen roundwound in stores, so all I can do is guess that they are constructed differently to make them sound more like a real bass (as opposed to a bass guitar).

Easy
i defretted mine last nite it took like 30 mins, i took some wire cutters/needle nose pliers and pulled them out, then i took a wood filler with a hardner and filled the slots and packed the filler in the slots with a note card. then just sand the rest off with a fine sand paper, its worked great. p.s. flat would strings do have the groves if listent to the beatles or something you can tell they are flat wound they have that sound i from they mygirl song.

Or you can fill the slots with maple veneer and give you a cool contrast, and a mroe classy look. It will work better than filing the frets down... a fretboard is radised; meaning it has a slight curve to it. This si for ease of playing. I bet you would have a hell of a time filing the frets down perfectly flat along the radius. If they arent flat the strings will hit the remainder of the fret.

why? maybe his neck is nice a broken in, or has a good grain pattern to it. Plus he can do this for very little money. It really isent hard to do.

I defretted my Fender Deluxe Active Jazz bass and it fuckin' cries when I play it now, soooo nice. If you decide to do it, TAKE YOUR TIME...and read up a lot before hand.
