Despised Icon

Just wanted to know your opinion on this Quebec (Canada) band.
First, if you've never heard them, here are two tracks from their first album (released in 2002):
http://www.despisedicon.com/MP3/track1.mp3
http://www.despisedicon.com/MP3/track2.mp3

I would primarly describe this band as brutal technical experimental death metal/grindcore, but you should really listen to give yourself a good idea.

The vocalist on these songs is a girl (she's not in the band anymore), which is pretty impressive considering the fact that I've almost never seen one before growling that low and with so much heavyness.
Alex Erian (ex-Neuraxis) was the drummer on these tracks. He's now the vocalist of Despised Icon.
This band reminds me of Neuraxis, minus the "melodic" aspect. The vocals vary a lot, which is cool. Also, the production is top notch.

Well, check out "Consumed by your poison" their first album, or the new one which should be released around September 2004 I think. It's worth it, I can guarantee.

Oh yeah : they'll play April 10th, in Montreal (l'Alizee), with Neuraxis and Blinded by Faith, and May 18th, in Montreal too (Foufounes Electriques), with Suffocation and Dying Fetus (oops I think I just came in my pants )

For more tour dates, check out www.despisedicon.com

EDIT : Oh yeah, I've almost forgotten, there's this band called "Ion Dissonance" which is REALLY REALLY technical and experimental (incredible musicianship). The hardcore vocals just don't really turn me on. But if you want to take a look at some live footage...
http://www.iondissonance.com/media/...tII_Toronto.wmv
Or some mp3s (I strongly suggest you to listen to it, because of the much greater sound quality) :
http://www.iondissonance.com/discography/
Tell me what you think.

Despised Icon had good muscianship, but the vocals where weak. Yes, for a girl it was impressive; but it really didn't sound great. And every time she came out of a growl and screamed it sounded horrible. Girls just arn't ment for growling. But other than that, it was good.

Ion Dissonance is good. I don't like the vocals much either but it's nothing unbarable. They are like a much better Dillinger.

It's obvious I wouldn't miss that even if Devon was willing to fuck me on that particular day. Well, now that I'm thinking about it, I'd just tell a friend to bring a camera and film the show for me.

I just checked on dyingfetus.com and it's not written anywhere that they're going to play with Suffo in Montreal.
I checked suffocation.us and they only say : "w/ Premonitions of War"
DF might be just a rumor.

canadian metal is awesome!

The music was good but the vocs... or whatever that annoying sound is through the whole song got pretty annoying. They would probably be good live.

Yeah, I guess it's true. It's just unbelievable. Both DF and Suffocation in the same show...
I don't know the third band though, "Premonitions of War".

According to a few people, they are "metalcore/grindcore". So, no fucking idea what that would turn out to be like. The bassist is in The Red Chord, though.

I'm seeing PoW with Suffo and Morbid. With the bassist of The Red Chord im sure they'll be decent..or at least I hope so.

I wish it was Fetus instead of Morbid..lucky Canadians.

Have you ever noticed how ugly the current line-up of Dying Fetus are? Ergh.

I don't really like 'em any more. I got sick of all the slow-paced "pit" riffs, and the same wanky guitar tricks they use on every album.

Haha... Where do you live, Darko ? In the States ? If yes, you've got to see more bands every year than I'll probably see in my entire life... And I'm sure Dying Fetus come once in a while to your village...

The Red Chord, I don't know them. I'll have to do some research on them.

I still like the last album though. I just don't understand the radical change in their ideas. I don't know if you've read them, but read the lyrics to "One Shot One Kill". They're now right-wing extremists (instead of the anarchists they used to be) (and I'm only talking here about the lyrics, I know they've never planned to blow up anything). It's like they've been brainwashed, I don't know. Maybe they knew someone who died in the 11/9...

Maybe one of the new guys wrote those lyrics. I don't like them.

I feel the same way, but I still like them. They are getting pretty redundant but..tis the fate of most metal bands.

I live in California. Strange, I always see adds for awesome Canadian shows. Fetus has been here I think once in the past 2 years.

The Red Chord are awesome. Download the album "Fused Together in Revolving Doors".

I also notices about there view changes, but they may just be for the war. Who knows.

Just think about those metalheads that live in Alaska... I guess "once in the past 2 years" would be like a record for them. But yeah, we're lucky here, especially in Montreal. I think Montreal and Vancouver get most of the shows in Canada.

Anyway, about the lyrics... do any of you guys remember the lyrics from Death's "Spiritual Healing" album. A lot of it was kind of narrow-minded, but the album is still enjoyable... so I think it doesn't really matter. What's worse is the fact that they seem to start using a recipe for their songs. We'll have to wait for the next album... But then again, Dying Fetus put out more good albums than a lot of bands I know and they've been around for awhile, so it's time they take a little drop now.

And thanks for the suggestion Darko !

Hahaha, I figured I would get that. I enjoy Fetus much more than Morbid.

As for the changing lyrical content..its part of growing. I think its pretty interesting to see somone's beliefs change completely.

It's just that the lyrics were written by Jason Netherton before who
is an anarchist and now they are written(except for the song
Vengeance Unleashed) by Mike Kimball,Gallagher said
he didn't write any lyrics ever and he doesn't care about them

P.O.W. is produced by hate eternal's erik rutan at his studio in florida. POW plays some awesome songs (very very good) but they're only 1 to 1 1/2 minutes long and i think theres only like 5 songs on their new cd. I wouldnt call it much more then a demo but i would go just to see them.

Could you compare them to any other bands? I haven't heard them.
