Question pedal?...

hey, i'm looking for a distortion pedal... i want it to sound doom'ish (early katatonia, my dying bride, early anathema, etc...) can you recommend something?... so far i'm thinking about Boss MT-2, are there any other alternatives?...

Cannibal Corpse used the MetalZone plugged in a JCM800 for Tomb of the Mutalited

Zakk Wylde uses one of the Boss Overdrives.

Satriani uses the Boss ds1 as did Chuck from Death on the first few Death records.

I Prefer DS-1 Over my MT-2 for lower tuning "C" for more of a doom sound. But I think that for doom metal an Overdrive sounds better. Boss just came out with a new anniversary pedal
the OD-3 (Overdrive-3). From what I've heard it sounds amazing.
But I have yet to by one myself. So I'll just use the OD on my Amp for now.

So just tune lower "C" or even "D" sounds pretty dark.

I use an MT-2 Metal Zone -> GE-7 Graphic Equaliser .

I thought the MT-2 was great.... until I plugged the GE-7 in after it.... now the MT-2 IS WEAK without it.... it's almost a joke

If you've got an MT-2.... get a GE-7 (or similar) for it... does wonders!

yep that's why Mesa Boogie have such good distortion for metal , EQ after the gainstages.

If you EQ before the preamp gain (see standard Marshall,Peavey,... amps) you have a tendency to sound muddy because you first scoop your sound and then send it through the preamp, modifying the frequencies and disturbing them so that the sound you get out of the preamp sounds muddy and without definition if you push the gain too much.
The best would be to crank the gain on your amp ,or to crank the gain on your pedal and then putting an EQ pedal in the fx loop or if you use a pedal put the EQ pedal directly after the distortion pedal.
If you use the fx loop be sure that it's a paralel loop and not a serial loop like most Marshalls.
If you use an eq pedal also be sure that the eq knobs on your amp are neutral (middle for every knob except for presence which can be maxed ,or all the knobs maxed) Whatever you do just don't scoop the ALL the mids on your amps too.

I recommed the Boss Metal Zone II pedal more than any other pedal on the face of the earth. the Boss Metal Zone II pedal gives you every possible type of distorted tone, anything from a Hendrix-like fuzz to a full-blown to-hell-and-back distortion.

DOD pedals

I'm currently using a DOD Grunge for my band and I can get a real good death metalish distortion on it. Anyways, it's been through a lot and I need another, has anyone tried DOD's new pedal (name escapes me at the moment, maybe Tri-Metal?)
How does it sound for death metal or should I get another Grunge?

I own the DOD grunge pedal as well as the DOD death metal pedal and they both actually sound
pretty much the same, but the death metal is better choice - it does sound slightly heavier and I use it more, but I don't use either of em that much anymore. But yeah like I said go with the death
metal.

boss metalzone \m/

i've played on both death metal & metalzone & frankly, metalzone RULZ !!! but still for playing death metal, i'd say you go in for DOD death metal...its got a raw-er tone than metalzone & is much much simpler to use...aaaaaaand its tone is also much heavier

if you want to play tinny, fuzzy and noisy DM, get the Metalzone...

however, if you're going to play bassy, powerful DM with clarity then get a fucking Zoom Tri-metal...i bought one last month and it is like the metalzone but with MORE gain and bass while keeping the sound clear, not muddy...

TRIMETAL =

boss is the best effects company out there, and they dont give you a "tinny, fuzzy, and noizy" death metal sound, you just have to fuck around with it for a while.

there is too much feedback with the DOD Death Metal pedal....
I also had a DOD Grunge pedal and that one was also good!

please man, don't buy a Metalzone!

that pedal is so hyped-up and over-rated and it isn't good for death metal...the sound is very thin and nasally and it's only good for thrash/classic metal. Just get a Zoom Tri-metal...i have one right now and it is the best distortion pedal i've ever heard...lots of bass and plenty of gain for a Suffocation/Dying Fetus tone...

i think in the states it's more expensive than the metalzone...just search for it or go to Zoom's website...

here's a clip of me playing with the tri-metal direct to the soundcard:

Boss Metal Zone

I have a Boss Metal Zone Pedal (MT-2) with which I have done many test recordings and I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips as far as settings.. I'm looking for some distortion but I don't want to completely drown out the tone comming from the instrument. I also have to lower my octive to get a really deep sound, I use a pitch shifter for that. So in all, I run a line from my violin to the pitch shifter and then to the metal zone.

Way to revive a 4 and a half year old thread.

Metal Zone is bullshit! Get the Digitech Metal Master. WIth the Digitech threw my peavey 6505+ or a Messa Boogie triple rectifier i get a tone almost as sexy as Decapitated's on Nihility. The Metal Master just helps you get that rich "gin gin gin" tone that sounds crunchy as fuck.

this thread was started in 2001.

it has now been resurrected 3 times.

everybody knows the metalzone sounds like shit, so lets get over it.

If you want a REAL pedal, look into Blackstar.

The Metalzone doesn't sound like shit. Well, at least not all the time . I have one and I want to get the Robert Keeley mod for it, heard really good things about it. They fix it up so it has three different gain stages, one of which should not be used on anything less than a haflstack. Anyone around here have any experience with those?

screw keeley, get a blackstar. Keeley adds ibanez ts-9 or ts-808 parts to the mt-2. Blackstar is all tube, and therefore will sound over 9000 times better.

now lets let this thread go back to thready-heaven

Well I did too but it's not a tube pedal by any means.
