Many of them are, but I can't remember which haha. Same goes for Linux (trisexual?). A lot of open source software is compatible with both Windows and Linux, but that's not a general rule.

If nomad would install [table] tags functionality things would be much easier to lay out and annotate (such as adding brief descriptions and compatibility information), plus the top post would be a damn sight easier on the eye! I might email him, but I doubt he'd go to all that hassle - and it is a hassle - for the sake of one thread.

If you have an Intel based mac I believe all you have to do is open up Finder and write Boot camp in the search window. Check out the documentation for it and you'll probably be flying pretty soon, as far as such a metaphor can be applied to anything kernel32-related.

I was thinking of adopting a colour code to differentiate between the PC, Mac and Linux-based platforms so that separate lists of software wouldn't be necessary. For instance:

Does your TV have an HDMI or DVI slot? I'm assuming it doesn't if you're looking for an S-Video laptop, but it's worth checking. It's also worth checking that your TV is actually capable of receiving and outputting video from a laptop/PC. I recently discovered that my HDTV wasn't built with that in mind and I wasted a whole £3 on a cable to connect my laptop to it It's tempting to assume that an LCD or a plasma telly can be used as a standard computer monitor, especially if it's HD, but it's not always the case.

S-Video cables only carry video, so you'll need separate analogue cables for the audio unless you plan to just use the laptop as a hub for your speakers or whathaveyou.

Do you have any requirements from a new laptop besides video connectivity? What do you plan to use the laptop for? Gaming, recording music, graphics editing, general computing, etc.? If you've got $500 to spend I'm assuming you'll be doing more than just browsing Twatbook!

Because you're using a standard definition TV your laptop resolution will be pretty low. It depends on the TV but you're probably talking 640x480, which is gonna make movies look like shit. They'll be watchable for sure, but you should be prepared to accept a noticeable downgrade in quality.

If your TV has one of those that'll be your best bet, quality wise, compared to some other more primitive connections. You can buy cables which will input to S-Video and output from pretty much anything, such as S-Video Out, VGA, DVI or whatever. You can also buy separate adapters for the ends of the cables if you find you've bought the wrong one.

You can buy a VGA to S-Video cable, and that should do the job. You can get cables which have the audio component cables included on them, usually as three separate coloured connectors (red, white and yellow). Even an S-Video RCA cable, which is an old standard, will suffice if you're using a SDTV. If your TV is quite old you'll most likely have to go with the RCA cable anyway. If you have the instruction manual for the TV handy it should give you the specifications in the back, including the kinds of connections its capable of making.

Is anyone here familiar with ink jet printers? I'm having a problem with mine and Shmoogle hasn't really helped a whole lot.

When you are in the market for a new printer you should always check the ink it uses and see how much it costs, and factor that into your decision about which printer to buy. I have a Canon IP4500, and the ink prices are reasonable enough. The printer uses 5 separate cartridges, and they range from about £8 to £10 each. I just replace the ones which need replacing at any given time, rather than buying 5-packs (which are actually more expensive than 5 separate cartridges, at least they are on Amazon.co.uk). It's somewhat more hassle because it means you need to make separate orders at different times as and when needed, but it works out cheaper. And Christ knows your family knows the meaning of the word cheap.

Well I have a Canon XPS4000^2 and it doesn't even need ink cartridges. It just runs off the blood of Jew babies. Every few months I have to either go down to the local Synagogue (boy is that place a riot, tell you what!) and collect the draining blood from the daily brisk, or, I have to go down to the hospital, swipe a Jew baby, and just drain its blood into a chalice that I then pour into the printer's blood bowl. Is anyone here a self-taught programmer? If so, how did you cut your teeth? I've attempted to get into this shit at least twice a year since I was a kid but the long-winded tutorial sites and vague YouTube videos always leave me scratching my head and feeling disheartened/overwhelmed. I think if I could get to the point where I could cobble together a basic program (something more than "hello world!" but not quite AutoCAD) my interest would be piqued enough to keep me grinding forwards, but getting to that stage seems to be beyond my mental capacity.

Visual Basic is where I would start if I was beginning all over again. I'd get a book On Visual Basic and use the express editions by Microsoft to work with it.

Really to get past all the "learning imo bullshit" programs you gotta run through the book, understand the material, and then set a goal for a program you would like to make. The program should be something useful to your self, or a program thats already out with additions you would like to add to it(Make that whole program plus the addon's).

There's alot more to it than just learning that one language as well. Each operating system has its own set of API's which you will learn for big projects. GOOGLE is your friend when it comes to programming lots of material well explained on some pages and others not.

Visual Basic is easy and simple to a certain extent. It takes some hardwork and dedication at first man, you'll get use to it. Don't try to understand everything at first to this day I still don't understand some concepts(Recursion took me awhile to get down in code not in theory).

A book with code examples man can help you out more than you'll ever know and online resources. I'd go to Amazon.com and read reviews on books and see which one offers the best results.

Visual Basics is a great start but by no means paddy a language to stay with. After a period of time of writing great things in VB learn Java, C, C++, C#.

Also, DO NOT SKIP OVER INFORMATION IN THE BOOK. Drill your self through each chapter, get a book that lets you write examples at the end and also supplies source code for you to look at.

Visual Basics is a Windows dependent platform only(The Integrated Development Environment is only for windows). The other programming languages I mentioned are cross platform and will work on Linux and Mac(not sure about C# on Mac though.)

You may have to look this up for your self but I think Delphi is cross platform as well and is a close but more powerful relative to Visual Basic. The Delphi Integrated development environment from what we could check out here at work last time only had a trail version and not a free or student version like the express editions that Microsoft Offers.

I have some nice ebooks on an older version of Visual Basic it's for the 6.0 version. However there have been 2003,2005, 2008, and 2010 released since VB6.0 back in 1998(It may have even been released before then). I can supply you with links and such if you would like in an PM that could lead you in the direction you want to go.

The main thing to concentrate on is not setting to high of goals. Basic text editors and such are nothing to be ashamed of in making, basic Server Client connection that sends nothing buy "HEY" to a label on the Server is nothing to be ashamed of. Keep all code you create as well you never know when you'll understand something one day and then 5 months from now need that code can't find it and have to re-struggle to understand the concept again. COMMENT your code like crazy at first too it gives you a better grasp of where you stand.

Earlier in this post I stated Google was your friend however it can be your worst enemy. Outdated material riddles the internet as well. Use legit forums and websites. Before asking questions check out the dates people have posted stuff, and how fast the replies they received if it seems they get zero replies or the post are really outdated more and likely that forum has died.

I love getting information from books, but I have to put that information to work quickly to get a grasp on it.

Ones you learn one language, the rest are easier to grasp because the same concepts are there, but one language can have more limited power and speed than the other.

So let me stop ranting and if you would like me to supply any information to you I'm around, I'm currently working on a project for work now. A language I've never even used, A database language I've never even used, on a platform I'm currently getting very comfortable with "Linux", soon to be the only operating system I use. All is going well thanks to forum post, and a book I pirated online because the book that was supplied to me was out of date. Ebooks are nice and all but a real book you can hold in your hand and highlight and read in any comfy chair in your home are the best to me anyway.

You need to subscribe to a Usenet server and then find a website which indexes files on the sever, and you download .NZB files from there and load them into a Usenet client. I highly recommend the following:

Client: Alt.binz [http://www.altbinz.net/index.php?page=downloadz]

The server is one of the cheapest but I've been using it for several years and it's worked perfectly the entire time; I always get full download speeds and rarely have any connection issues.

The NZBMatrix website is practically free - you just pay a one-off fee of £2 or whatever the equivalent is in your currency and you get a lifetime membership. Newzbin.com is the most popular website, but it requires a monthly subscription and to be honest it doesn't have as many files as NZBMatrix. You're really only paying of special website functionality which you probably won't use anyway.

The Alt.binz client is free, but the last free version is a few years old. It works perfectly though. There are other clients which aren't free but finding a cracked version of them which doesn't contain a trojan is tricky and not worth the effort - Alt.binz rules.

Before signing up you should acquaint yourself with the concepts of Usenet, because if you're coming to it fresh from P2P it's a bit unusual. Here's a quick run down of how it works:

Someone uploads files onto Usenet. Your server provides you with access to those files. If you want to download them easily, however, you need to use an indexing site like NZBMatrix, which is like a search engine for the files which reside on the server (it's the same as your ISP giving you access to the internet and Google helping you find the sites you want). These sites package the files and arrange them in an intuitive way (most files are segmented using WinRAR, and the indexing sites gather all of the separate parts into one place for you, etc.). You can download the entire package's .NZB file or chose specific files to download from within the package. The .NZB file is usually quite small (it's like using BitTorrent in that respect) and then you load these into your client. The client goes through your Usenet server account and downloads the files for you. There's no uploading or seed ratios involved.

Another aspect of Usenet you won't have encountered with P2P is the need to repair corrupted archives and files. This is done using a program called QuickPar. When you download lots of segmented archives for a movie there are also PAR2 files included - these are the recovery volumes used by QuickPar. You usually don't need these, but sometimes you do (I don't download them until I'm sure I need them, saving myself plenty of bandwidth). If you find that you get errors when extracting an archive run the included PAR2 file which will then start QuickPar, which then checks each volume for corruption. If it finds any it'll use the larger PAR2 files to repair them. Click here for a more detailed overview of how this shit works.

All of this sounds like a lot of hard work, but trust me it's pretty easy once you get the concepts down and it makes being a pirating cunt so fucking easy/safe.

Peer Guardian doesn't block your IP address, it blocks other people's, thus preventing snooping fuckers like the MPA from connecting to you assuming your blocklists are updated regularly. If you want to mask your IP address there are ways of doing it via proxy servers and the like, but if you get caught downloading illegally the proxy server owners will hand your real IP address/ISP over to the companies who discovered you were sharing copyrighted material. In other words, they're not that helpful in the long run.

I use Blocklist Manager to update the ipfilter.dat file used by uTorrent and eMule (and lots of other clients of a similar nature). It downloads long lists of IP addresses known to belong to cunts, and the lists are generally updated every day. I also import my existing ipfilter files from uTorrent and eMule and combine their contents with the updated lists downloaded by Blocklist Manager before exporting them to my uTorrent and eMule directories. This ensures that the IP address these two programs have accumulated themselves are preserved.

Peer Guardian is another option, but this works more like a real-time firewall than a simple list. It prevents IP addresses from connecting to you or being reached by you, and I've always found myself unable to browse certain sites because of it. It's not worth the effort. It does, however, provide you with more blocklists you can import into the Blocklist Manager one. Jut run it, update its lists, then close it before running Blocklist Manager. Because the ipfilter.dat file is only used by the P2P client itself it doesn't affect browsing or anything else.

So it seems like I will be forced to hook up one of my windows computers to the net, in order to participate in a course. (Unless someone here is familiar with Citrix and could tell me why the fuck all my logical drives doesn't show up when I use my mac?)
And since it's a PC running windows I'll need anti virus. Anyone in particular in the list you wanna recommend?

Not sure about Citrix haha, but I think Avast! Anti-virus is probably your best bet. Don't install the Web Shield or the Network Shield, however - it'll completely swamp your internet connection. A firewall will protect you net-side anyways. If you need a firewall Windows' own firewall will probably suffice, but I highly recommend Comodo. Comodo comes with anti-virus too if you want to just use that, but it's safer to use separate applications for each. If you're just accessing your course - as opposed to dredging porn sites and file sharing - the Comodo Internet Security package will do fine!

Don't you use anti-virus on your Mac? I know that Linux-based systems are significantly less likely to be attacked by viruses, but I assumed Macs - being as popular as they are - would be fair game for malware writers.

With the exception of net-side threats like worms I don't think anti-virus software is needed at all if you're half-way sentient about what you're doing/installing/downloading. I'm not, unfortunately. I once downloaded an .exe which I thought was a list of recipes for a bread machine. Completely fucking destroyed my system. What a twat.

Sure I use anti virus for the mac, it's just so damn rare to see anything truly harmful come along that you have it more for the fact that you'd feel like a complete idiot if you did get hit.
But you're a lot safer with a mac. First off it's a lot harder to go viral with anything hitting mac, because Apple is still only like 10% of the market. Plus, macs don't carry around the fat, bloated hole riddled piece of embarrassment known as kernel32. Not to mention, you don't have admin access by default when starting the computer, instead you open that with a password when doing installs. So it's not enough to download something bad, you usually have to punch in a code yourself before anything actually gets into the system. Aaaaand, the power of open source shines through, since whenever someone do try to exploit a weakness you have hundred of thousands of little geeks all around the world instantly jumping to their Unix directory and start coding counter measures. Did I mention the fact that you don't have to worry about IE and good ole' friendly Active X either? You don't, you know.

If you use Usenet the chances of anything happening to you for simply downloading (as opposed to uploading) are at this moment in time non-existent, although your ISP may throttle your connection if you connect to it (some are extremely intrusive like that, most aren't). I highly recommend using Usenet instead of P2P when you can. Obviously it costs money to do that, but it pays for itself as soon as you download a single album/movie.

P2P like BitTorrent is more risky for the very fact that it's P2P. You don't know who you're connecting to - it could be a legit user or a snooping IP-logging cunt. Even if you take every precaution you're never really safe, but enough about yo mama's split cervix.

I tend to use BitTorrent or eMule as a last resort when Usenet doesn't have what I want, but even before that I'll try Rapidshare/MegaUpload searches. Here's one of the forums I visit for Rapidshare links:

Use Cryptload to manage the downloads (it automatically inputs the CAPTCHA codes etc.). A lot of the time simply Google-searching something like this will work:

"nude photos of dylan neal" rapidshare OR "nude photos of dylan neal" megaupload [or whatever file host you want]

A lot of the results will be bullshit, but if you persevere you'll eventually find what you need most of the time, and the only risk you run is downloading junk files or viruses. That is, if the file you're downloading is deemed illegal by RapidShare they simply delete it and that's that.

I've actually found some very rare and awesome shit searching in this way, I highly recommend doing it before resorting to P2P.

@Amadeus: Windows Vista and later has the UAC (User Account Control) which is essentially the same kind of security measure Linux offers, but it's so fucking intrusive and irritating that I switch it off every time I reinstall. I have been duped by viruses before, but I haven't had a virus in about 4 years and I think I'm confident enough these days to compute without a bodyguard asking me if I'm sure I want to install a program. That said, if Linux could properly support all of my favourite games and apps I'd probably have migrated to that platform a decade ago, but I'd rather finger Dylan's mama's split cervix than use a Mac, purely as a matter of principle. No one is ever taught in school how to program with it. There are not any languages like Visual Basic for it, so kids can't make some shit let me use all the APIs in the book to lock down you pc kind of deal. Hell I'm majoring in Software Engineering and I've yet to see a course related to MAC programming, I'm sure though Google is full of info on it though. I know video games were a big NO back in the day, but I think that was more of a hardware issue than programming.

What kind of printer is it? The only thing I've found about exclamation points and ink has to do with the triangle with the point in it on the machine itself. I found one place that said odd markings can mean a driver isn't working properly. Yours is feeding paper through it okay and printing otherwise, but just has that border on it, right?

I think I posted in the RTT that I was having trouble with my computer and thought it might be due to the 90 degree heat. Well, $50+tax later I've been told that I've had FB viruses on it for quite some time. He's removing 112. My husband rarely uses the computer, but somehow he got a p2p file sharing program and someone has been loading music with it. All my equipment is otherwise fine. The guy said he'd gotten 13 computer in just this morning and they all have FB related issues.

I was looking at Transmission before posting and it's not available on Windows without some third-party building going on. I've been trying qBittorrent instead and it seems to be pretty good, and is actually a direct alternative to uTorrent so it feels familiar and such. Any other suggestions would be good though!

I loved uTorrent for years, but it's turned into a bloated hunk of shit with a view to becoming evermore bloated in future. Plus it now comes bundled with spyware/adware, and being bought by BitTorrent Inc. probably didn't help matters.

qBittorrent is worth checking out if you fancy a change.

I've gotten so used to uTorrent over the years that I haven't bothered checking into who owned the software. BitTorrent is shit, and I have noticed the spyware recently, but I blew it off thinking pr0n was the culprit.

I have an idea to improve torrenting, but not being a programmer I have no idea how difficult it would be to do this; could you program a tool that will automatically search a list of torrent sites using a .torrent's hash code to find extra trackers relevant to that torrent and to then add those trackers to the torrent? To make it client-independent it'd be awesome if the .torrent file on your Desktop or wherever could be right-clicked and an option along the lines of "Update Trackers..." would be available, so the file itself would be updated rather than it happening after it's already been added to the client.

Currently if you want to add extra trackers you have to search the web using the hash code and manually go through every result, downloading the torrent and adding it to uTorrent or manually pasting in each tracker you find on the web. It takes fucking forever. If you could produce something that would automate the task you'd be a legend. I'd suck your cock for sure. Although to be fair I'd suck it anyway, ya handsome fuck ya.

I'll see what I can do. What torrent program have you used the most, that way I can better program an interface thats more suitable for what your use too.

I use uTorrent; I switched back after realising that even with all of the bloated shit in it it's still the best client, plus it's the only one I know of that will import the trackers to existing torrents already loaded in the client.

Hey you computer wizards, help needed. I know how many angles you can get on the circumstances, so just fire away on that front. Now, my problem:
A friend of mine works at a women's shelter in town. She told me they could use a computer program for filling in the form they use when someone new comes seeking help. Of course, form fillers abound on the net, but there are a couple of extra features that would be useful:
Required login. The primary point of this is so that the program stores who fills in a form.
Automatic back-up. Yea, I know, but IF there happened to be a program with a nifty feature that just allows you to check a box to have it routinely copy all the files in a directory to a USB or something, that would make my day.

So yea, if anyone has any ideas on this I'd be happy to hear it. I'm currently testing a bunch of open source form fillers and having a look at what it would take to tweak them to suit our needs, but you never know when someone has a shortcut for ya!

Came in here, vice the PC gaming thread because I recently built a new desktop. Shit is badass!! Got an Asus P9X79 PRO, Intel i7 3930K, 16GB of Corsair Vengance DDR3 RAM, GeForce GTX 680, installed Win on a 240GB SSD with a 4TB drive for storage. Got an Intel liquid cooling system for the processor, new wide screen monitor, G15 keyboard and a decent mouse. It cost many thousands of yen and some of the software installation stuff is in Japanese..along with my monitor options, but it works.

Funny thing is, I've since put together a little team to do this work; we're basically building a complete hardware/software platform for handling sensitive data.

Oh, and nothing of that was mac, so I obviously can in no way acknowledge that that is a pretty badass get-up.
