good black metal bands
i am a newb to black metal, and id like to know a few bands, other than immortal, Old Man's Child, Rotting Christ, and the more mainstream CoF and dimmu borgir.
go ahead, laugh at my ignorance, but thats why i ask questions, to learn, that i dont listen to shitty music and get turned away from the genre.

For starting out I'd try Akercocke because they're a really good link between death metal and black metal. They have both black and death parts to their songs so should ease you into other bands such as Emperor who offer a more full blown black metal experience.
Despite liking these two bands, I can't abide black metal.
What are Absu like, Nihilist? Their name sounds kinda Egyptian so I've got an image of Nile playing black metal *froths at mouth*

Absu.. thrashy/black metal. Unreal drummer, though. I'd advise you to check out Melechesh, if you're looking for Nile-ish black metal. Same drummer in that band too.

Yeah I've heard of Melechesh but the reviews I've read have been differing so I'm not sure of which ones to believe. When I get a job and I'm earning millions (!) I'll just buy it anyway, I guess.
The drummer's Proscriptor, right?

Marduk are awesome because they dont use distortion on their vocals like Dimmu and cof. And they have one of the most craziest drummers. As for Immortal, UHHHH! I never liked them. Mayhem is pretty good but not quite really fast with blast beats but its a good example of what old school BM is all abot. Possesed and Bathory are one of mine and my brother's favorite old BM bands.

As far as Black Metal goes..I'd have to go with:
1.Absu
2.Emperor
3.The Abyss..
4.Marduk
5.Old Man's Child.

-Impaled Northern Moonforest!!!
-(old) Satyricon, until Nemesis Divina was pretty fucking majestic!
-Hate Forest, Black with deathvocals.
-Dawn, Melodic black
-Kvist, Melodic black
-Aurora Borealis, technic black (Nile-ish)
-Funeral Mist, "True" black
-Ondskapt, "True" black
-Thyrane, sounds like Dimmu Borgir, but better.
-Graveworm, melodic, sounds like a mixture of cof and dimmu
-1349, Frost on drums, quite fast and "true"..

Absu's good too, not really black though. Tara is a good album from them

i don't know about you guys, but i think cof is like the blink 182 of black metal.
i don't dig on much of the black metal stuff, alot of it just seems like people are trying too hard to be "evil".
i like a few black metal bands like old mans child, dimmu, and mayhem, plus a few others, but most of the scene for that shit has gone to crap in my opinion.

Burzum and Mayhem (new Mayhem) you should stay away from. I personally am not too big a fan of BM, but I love Immortal, Emperor, and if you consider Dissection BM then that band.

If only in Immortal's one of the first releases was word Satan it doesn't make the newer material not-black metal. If you think that ideologically must be satanist if you listen black metal, then why do you listen Graveland? Man who runs that band is definetly not satanist, but in NS ideologies. And the music what Immortal make is black metal in it's purest form, I have no idea how someone who listen bands like Samael or Emperor could say that Immortal is not black metal.

Borknagar
Red Harvest

Immortal
Gorgoroth
Rotting Christ
Ebony Tears
I not very big on black metal. It could be better if they could get more creative with it. When I listen to black metal I look for the melody, deep death vocals, female backup vocals, fast drums (double bass). If the band lacks those elements, I don't bother with them.

My favourite Black Metal are the most songs of Nargaroth! There are very good parts in it.... double bass and great guitar riffs !! And I like the Black Metal/Trash Metal of the first album of Sodom ( In the sign of evil/ Persecution Mania)!

Give Dissection a crack. They're not the greatest thing ever, but they're certainly easy to listen to.
If you can listen to Khold happily, then you can call yourself a serious black metal nut. They're awash in gimmicks, but they sound great.
Limbonic Art a worth a listen as well. Weirdo, techno, black noise freaks.
Oh yeah, & Impaled Nazarene must've already been mentioned, surely.
Enjoy! Black metal is the greatest agent for social cleansing ever. Want to clear out your office? Black metal is your man every time ...that or a giant fart...

Is Children Of Bodom black metal or technical speed? I say technical speed. I am one of those picky people who break down thrash/speed/technical speed not that it really matters.

Definately not black metal. I think the ONLY reason people ever make this mistake is because of alexi's vocals, other than that i dont think any other part of the sound is even close to black metal. I am not so sure on saying what they are though, i just know they arnt black.
I like a lot of black metal, but some of it sucks. In order to grab my attention it either has to be melodic, or have great keyboards. Being both is a great mix... for me.

apart from the obvious (dark throne, mayhem etc) i prefer australian black metal it is less about the image and more about the music than the traditional norwegian bands. astriaal, atomizer, sadistik exekution, and destroyer 666 are a good way to go. other, non-australian bands worth listening to are absu, marduk, dissection, dawn. 2 bands definitely not to go with are cradle of filth and burzum. deinonychus is debatable, the musics shit but the vocals are insane.
btw, opeth is the greatest and most talented fucking band EVER you dumbcunt (althouh they are only a tiny bit black)

You totally forgot the cult australian BLACK metal band NAZXUL. Very great Beherit style stuff.
In my opinion BURZUM is definetly not shit music and it cannot be compared to CRADLE OF FILTH shit. Vocals are great.

Mayhem,
Dissection,
Emperor,
Aeternus.
Theres also a local BM band around here called Frozen, which is decent, but they're only starting out. I could picture them getting much better later on.
Opeth Is a great band, but they aren't BM. They only have tiny traces of MB in their early album Orchid, and even then its was hard to find or decipher, because it was mostly the imagery. They are more of a great Death/Melodic progression experimental metal. But Mikael Akerfeldt has an awesome clean voice, especially for the way he growls, its hard to keep your voice from bleeding unless you know how to do it the right way.

I said listing... not listening...... it's no good if everyone keeps listing the same bands is it? and too be honest, Emperor isn't all that good at all, they have some great songs, but only some.

depends on the specific styles f black and death, but overall, i have noticed a the biggest difference is vox, death being more growly, and black being more raspy/shreiky, also the music in the black i have listened to, which is more symphonic black, is more melodic than most death.

death is heavier, lower and harder. Black is just as the vocal more high/raspy

Ok maybe Symphonic Black Metal, but stuff like old MAyhem (Live in Leipzig time) or Darkthrone (Transilvanian Hunger) isn't really soo melodic, ok, it has some melodic parts sometimes but needn't to be so everytime
But Black Metal has so many different styles anyway, it's hard to explain it all at once

Sorry my english skills aren't highest in this board. or I just misread that. If some band is just great, I would list it everywhere where is asked about fav/great bands (I don't mean repeatly posting/flooding just one post). For exsample Behexen, Musta Surma or Satanic Warmaster

Immortal is really good, especially their older stuff... So stick with them... If you want more...
MayheM
Gorgoroth
Nargaroth (Black Metal Ist Krieg)
Graveland
Burzum (old)
Dark Funeral (old)
Abigor
Emperor (old)
Sarcofago
VON (But good luck getting your hands on some of their stuff)
Havohej
Demoncy
Bathory
Nokturnal Mortum
Darkthrone (Transilvanian Hunger kicks ass)
Satyricon, yeah, but only Nemesis Divina
Zyklon is a joke, skip them
Venom is good old school black metal, still relatively blues- based... and with primitive anti- christian views... but I like them.
Graveworm
Lord Wind (more like Viking Metal, but oh well...)
Umm... If you want more... ASK! I'm a BIG Black Metal fan.

ehh..
Von - Satanic Blood Angel CD/LP (released recently and including Satanic Blood and Blood Angel demos)
Von - Satanic Blood MCD (re-release of this demo by Hellspawn rec., Sweden. And other re-release by Hammerheart rec., The Netherlands)

In my opinion Satyricon's debut Dark Medieval Times was their best release. Still Nemesis Divina was good (session guitarist Nocturno Culto of Darkthrone). Newest Satyricon is bad industrialized metal.

Venom was a joke band, maybe the only band of the First Wave of black metal which was really BEHIND their views was Mercyful Fate (it's legendary singer King Diamond). He was truely satanist, not a joke maker as Venom's Cronos is.

Not neccesarily. Your probably thinking of grindcore or gore metal. If you take a look at blizzard beasts by immortal and A Blaze In The Northern Sky by Darkthrone, they barely have any melody in it compared to In Flames - Lunar Strain, or Arch Enemy - Wages of Sin.

Bathory guys weren't real behind their views (early 80's albums lyrics was about satanism, newer was about Norwegian Mythology)
I haven't get got much know of Hellhammer (Later named as Celtic Frost), but King Diamond was the true influentical guy in Black Metal.

I still like Bathory. And by the way, Black Metal Ist Krieg is very good, well, atleast I liked it... I agree that new Satyricon sucks though. I can't believe what has happened to them. It's ridiculous.

Yeah, Bathory is great. I like both old and new styles from Bathory, I even like epic masterpiece "Blood, Fire, Death" more than any other releases of it.
Why this happened to Satyricon? Well it's a Norwegian band, there's happened the strange industrial-trend in bm and there has born many industrialized black metal bands. Most of those bands are totally crap.

I've heard of them Timey, they're absolutly awesome
It's one of my favorite band so I got all of their albums.
To tell you the truth, Chaosborn starts where Eskhata left off, wich is good. They did'nt change much. If you loved their other releases, you definitly got to buy this.
By the way Timedragon, I've listen to all the band you've suggested to me on another tread. They're all good especially Lord Belial. Thanks!

Monk: Yeah, everything i heard from catamenia sounded great. I will definately obtain what i can from them. And im glad to have helped you find something you like.
Dame: Im sooo sorry that my "kid" vocabulary doesnt appeal to your strictly grim, dark, black(metal) "tounge"

I really don't like Catamenia, bit boring black metal. Nothing special. It's not bad black metal but it's sertently isn't good either. "Halls of Frozen North" release was maybe the best of this band, but newer ones are not good in my opinion.
