Of course, if you try to sweep like Muhammed Suicmez on your first attempt it's going to sound like the death throes of a baboon in labour so set your sights a little lower at first. You could try practising the rolling motion on 3-string sweeps at first. Try the following example for your index finger:
Code:
|-------12h15p12----------12h15p12----|
|----12----------12----12----------12-|
|-12----------------12----------------|
|-------------------------------------|
|-------------------------------------|
|-------------------------------------|
And then the next example for your ring or middle fingers:
Code:
|----------12h15p12---------|
|-------14----------14------|
|----14----------------14---|
|-14---------------------14-|
|---------------------------|
|---------------------------|
Then you should have the necessary skills to attempt 5 and 6-string sweeps like:
Code:
|-------------------12h15p12-------------------|
|----------------12----------12----------------|
|-------------12----------------12-------------|
|----------14----------------------14----------|
|-------14----------------------------14-------|
|-12h15----------------------------------15p12-|
|
Wow tank you

Spider sweeping?
Ive only recently heard of this form, and I havent seen anyone do it. According to my friend, hes seen the guy from Necrophagist do it. It has something to do with sweeping with 4 fingers from each hand on the fretboard, and each note is hammered on and pulled off. Does anyone know what Im talking about, and has anyone ever tried this?

Do you mean tapped arpeggios? I can tap out arpeggios but I tend to use just the one finger to tap them. Chris Arp of Psyopus does it with four fingers, I believe.

errmm, i dont know a good way to explain but ill try my fucking best
use a verry loose wrist (duh) but make sure u put pressure on the pick, so u rilli bash into the next string.
also try to get ur pick angeled, not like how u would angle it for fast trempicking, but try to bend it up or down
so the poin of ur pick points towarts the high or low e string
so if u sweep down the pick points towarts the low E
and if u sweep up it bends towarts the high E
maybe this helps a bit
down stroke
/ / / / / /
. . . . . .
up stroke
\ \ \ \ \ \
. . . . . .
every dot is a string from the front or back of the guitar
and the / \ is the way u bent the pick for up and down strokes
if this doesnt help ya, keep to the explanation above
hopefully this makes a little sence to ya

Does anybody want to elaborate on the theory behind arpeggios? If not I'll move this to the Guitar Forum.

An arpeggio consists of scale degrees 1/3/5. There of course are others, but this is the most generic one. Ha, you can move it now, cause that's pretty much all an arpeggio is... Then I'll stick it in the scales and sweeps page.

i always thought an arpeggio was when you play the notes of a chord but seperatly in a row so instead of
e
c
a
it would be like
a, e, c, e ,a c ect

Couldn't you just drop down a string and back a fret and accomplish the same thing

You could, but this method will improve your accuracy in shifting down frets at high speed. Move from the 6th string to the 1st and back again using this pattern and build up speed gradually. It sounds and looks very impressive when done in about 5 seconds. It's quite simple if you're fully warmed up and a good alternate picker.

That's where I learnt it from. I believe it was from a Mick Thompson lesson and that is the exercise he uses to warm up. For the record, he plays it lightning quick.
GD: yeah, those are frets.
h4x5k8: you finger the first four frets with each of your four fretting fingers and then (very) quickly shift up to the next four and fret them in the same way. Then when you shift up a string you (very) quickly shift back and repeat the cycle.
As I said earlier, it's an excellent exercise for improving your accuracy when moving up and down the fretboard quickly. Try to add some frets inbetween as well to further improve accuracy and dexterity.
Eg,
E|-1-2-3-4-6-7-8-9-|
E|-1-2-3-4-7-8-9-10-|
etc...
It will greatly improve your ability to do stuff like:
e|-0h4h7-0h7h10-0h4h7-0h12h15-0h4h7-0h15h19-0h4h7t12p7p4p0-|

Getting back to sweeping, whenever I attempt upstroke sweeps I mess up, and the notes sustain. Should I lift my hands off the frets, or should I try something else?
For example doing
--12
----13
------14
....I move my picking hand in an "upstroke" direction to keep it all balanced. But it ends up sounding terrible! Any help would ber GREATLY appreciated.

try removing your fingers from the frets as you sweep over them. Should kill that sustain you're talking about

You want to kinda move your fingers as if you were drumming them on a table, so you actually only fret one note at a time

I find that picking the string quite hard stops the notes from ring after playing. I know someone who uses his right hand to mute the strings after playing them but means he is struggling getting his speed up.
i only learnt how to sweep pick from this thread and a week later sweep picking has become one of my most important techniques.

Here is a sweep picking exercise i got from Marty Friedman from Megadeth. Sounds good slow or fast plus good exercise for hammer ons, pull offs and slides in a sweep.

I've never had guitar instruction from ANYONE in my life, so this thread really helped me learn the awesome technique that is sweeping. Thank-you all!
This is one of my favourite sweeping licks that comes straight from Exercise 9 of Passage to the Reaper by Alexi Laiho.

yeah this quite a stupid question - but when playing to a metronome, am i aiming to start the first sweep on the first click and the next sweep on the next click? If i try with a metronome it has to be going at a snails pace.
Also what type of speed should i be aiming for to make it sound so fluid?

I decided to take up sweeping
Iv just been practising sweeping real slowly, trying to get each note individual. Just in basic stuff like -
|-10---------|---------10|-13----------|---------13-----
|----11------|------11---|----12-------|------12--------
|-------12---|---12------|-------11----|---11-----------
|----------13|-13--------|-----------10|-10-------------
|------------|------------|-------------|----------------
Its fuckin hard! but i can do it slowly at least. Im guessing its all just a HEAP of practise.
|----------------------5h7-|-12h9---------------------------
|-------------------5h7----|------12h9---------------------
|---------------6h9--------|-----------11h9----------------
|-----------5h7------------|----------------9h7-------------
|-------5h7----------------|--------------------9h7---------
|---5h7--------------------|------------------------7h5------
I dont find that sorta thing too hard, i can do it fast. Its just the top kinda sweeping thats taking time to get used to
|-12------------------------
|----11--------------------
|-------11---------------
|----------11--------------
These are the ones i hate, the 'rolling barre' kinda bits.
Does anyone have some real beginners patterns which would be good for me to practise??
Thanks!

I don't think you should do it that way, but I guess it depends on the sweep your doing. A good way to do it would be to hit 4 notes of a sweep for every click, or a system similar to that. So If your playing at 100 bpm, your playing 4 notes per click, which is very slow for sweeping. Move the bpms up, and It will gets tough. Anything past 140 bpm at 4 notes per click is getting quite fluid sounding, IMO. That's just the way I do it, and it really helps co-ordinate your right picking hand with your left scaling hand (or vice versa).

cheers
trying to work out speed for 6 string sweeping as i seem to start speeding up after the 3rd sweep - should i just start at say 60bpm and do the whole sweep and just try and get it faster with all the notes (11 in all) in a beat?

This is the kinda stuff I like to practise with a metronome.
It's real useful for nailing timing and working up your speed.
|---------15-19-17-14------------------10-14-15-14-12--------
|------*17-------*---15-------------*12-------*------15~----
|-----16---------------14~---------11-----------------*------
|---17------------------*--------12--------------------------
|*19--------------------------*14----------------------------
|------------------------------------------------------------
The stars in front of, and under some, are metronome clicks. So in this case, on every 3 notes you hit you should be on perfect time with the metronome. The vibrato at the end is to be held briefly, until the next click.
Starting slow, at 100bpm, its quite difficult to get the timing right, its just so slow! Moving up to 120bpm, then 140, then 160 it starts to sound good. The sweep was intended for a speed close to 160. If u can get up to 180 and 200 you've got some crazy sweeping ability I start missing notes at 180, and I'm not on time with the metronome. Hope that helps in any way.

Those are cool patterns.
My favourite one i can play so far is
D|-------------7---9h13p9-11--------------
A|-----------8---8------------10-----------
F|--------9-----------------------11-------
C|-----9------------------------------13---
G|-10--------------------------------------
D|-----------------------------------------
D|----------------9h13h9h12-----------
A|------------11-------------11--------
F|---------9---------------------9------
C|-----11-------------------------------
G|-13-----------------------------------
D|--------------------------------------
This is the intro from Necrophagist - Fermented Offal Discharge
It was good to practise slow to get a hang of sweeping.
The first half I can already almost play as fast as the song. 1 day after learning
Another real cool bit of that song to learn is -
|----------15h19-15~---15-14h15p14--------
|-------17---------------------------17~----
|----16-------------------------------------
|-17----------------------------------------
|-------------------------------------------
|-------------------------------------------
The sweep is nice and short, easy to learn and real cool once you get it to speed.

Haha you HAVE to check this out then (if you havent).
http://www.smnnews.com/board/showth...6270#post986270
just scroll down and theres a video of a guy playing fermented offal discharge (its in like 5 parts or something).
Its awesome, i found that it helped me out learning to sweep being able to see what the finished product is like.
Look for a thread on jason becker in this forum somewhere, thats an insane video too.

i like ones like that, they sound impressive.
I quite often do this one to warm up. (pretty much the same thing)
|-------------------------------1h2h3---------
|-------------------------1h2h3------3p2p1---------
|-------------------1h2h3------------------3p2p1----
|-------------1h2h3------------------------------3p2p1-
|-------1h2h3------------------------------------------ect..
|-1h2h3-------------------------------------------
Just pick each string once, so its a sweep. And you can play it up and down the fretboard, and change finger patterns as well.
Works out a pretty good sweeping and fingering excersise.

i agree
all it takes is practise - start mindnumbingly slow and then increase speed - just like any other technique you try to learn
give it a week and you will see a huge improvement. A month ago I couldn't sweep - now i am playing at speed and its sounds awesome.
Get down to it!

Does anyone know any good sweeping patterns for the
B
G
D
A
E
strings?
Most of the patterns i have seen all involve the high e, and im looking for some cool once to play while im e-stringless.
B|----------8p7h10p9p7---------------
G|--------9-------------8--------------
D|------9-----------------9-------------
A|-7h10--------------------9p7---------
E|------------------------------------
I came up with that while pissing around.
You guys got anythin interesting

Here's a cool sweep that's excellent for practising quite a few of the standard shapes along with fretboard dexterity. Enjoy!

I think he means permutation. From my understanding of it, it's just a variation of an overall theme. Refer to Paganini's 24th Caprice.

yo peeps.
im kinda new to sweeps but in my usual style i seem to play pretty hard stuff first then go back to basics....hence why my knowlegde of triads is a bit poor, but i can sweep/tap/pick my arse off lol
anyway,
this was a pretty hard sweep excersice i found somewhere...(cant remember) its based off the megadeth solo from hanger 18, but its been extended. theres a bit of a solo before this, but here is the sweep part;
----17p13------------------17p13p18p13-17p13--------------
----------15------------15---------------------15-----------
-------------14-----14---------------------------14--------
-----------------15-----------------------------------------

---------15---------------15---------------------15------
-------------15--------15-----------------------------15
-------------------15--------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------
-15p12--------------------15p12-17p12-15p12--------
-------13-------------13-----------------------13----
------------12-----12------------------------------12-
----------------14-------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------
it takes abit of practice, but its worth it when u blast it fast.

I need help sweeping!!!!
Ok this has probably been asked a million times but I need help sweep picking. I can sweep down perfectly but sweeping back up is a problem.
I am looking to do Necrophagist/Dying Fetus sweeps. I know it takes time.
So do any of you guys have any exercises I can use for sweeping back up?

My sweeping is crap with more than 3 or 4 strings, necrophagist - foul body autopsy has some little sweep ups eg.
(1/16 notes at ~120bpm)

It's not really a "sweep exercise" but it might help...

I can nearly do a couple of 5 string sweeps, up and down, they're a little sloppy, but you get the idea.... i can't do 3 string up/down sweeps though, its just a big mess.
For the advice, i'd say simple keep with it, and make sure you angle your pick a little on the upstroke

Looking a few threads up in the "official scales and sweeps thread" might be a start.
Theres soooo many sweep patterns in there.

Thats the one.It would probally be easiest for you to sweep back up the same pattern that you sweep down.Practice some necrophagist.

the bit i found hardest was the fact u have to use finger 3 for the low 14 (string B), and finger 1 for the 15 (string G), and then finger 2 for the 14 on D string...well weird at first but its the only way to play those sort of shapes fast...

Tone
Hey, my sweeps are pretty clean, but my tone makes them kinda muddy. What kind of tone is best for really getting sweeps to shine through?
Thanks

Turn down the gain a bit, standard tuning is a lot more clear than downtuned, what are you current settings?

Low-8 Mid-5 High-7 Gain-10 Reverb-2. Also running it through a Zakkwylde overdrive pedal. Thanks!

I would personally get rid of the reverb. If you're using the amp gain and the pedal it's going to sound a bit muiddy probaby.....back off on one of them. The high might be better on 10, the mid on 7.

You're using amp distortion and pedal distortion? That's why it sounds muddy

The Zakk wylde overdrive is a very light and clean overdrive, I think it enhances the sound actually.

Chinese / Japanese Scales
anyone got any chinese/japanese sounding scales (or ones that actually originated from japan or china)?
i was on a lesson site once and there was a lesson called "the chinese scale", and it was just the major pentatonic
so i don't mean that mode of the pentatonic, but if you do have a scale like I'm after that does happen to be a pentatonic that isn't major or minor pentatonic, can you share that too?
cheers

I think this is a Japanese scale of some sort (in E), but I'm not sure of the name:
Code:
e|------------------------------12-14-|
B|------------------------12-14-------|
G|-------------------11-13------------|
D|-------------11-14------------------|
A|-------11-14------------------------|
E|-12-14------------------------------|

The Dimished scales is an 8 tone scale with 2 relative scales (modes) that go with it.
The 2 two modes for this scale are the Whole - Half and the Half - Whole.
Whole Half Diminished:
1,2,b3,4,b5,b6,6,7
In the key of E on 6th string the fret pattern would be:
0-2-3-5-6-8-9-11-12

Actually the Japanese scales are pentatonic scales meaning 5 tones.
The Kumoi scales is made up with the Root, 2nd, minor 3rd, 5th & 6th.
So on a single string it would look like this:
0-2-3-7-9
The HiroJoshi is almost the same as the Kumoi but with flattened 6th.
0-2-3-7-8
Notice the 3rd is a minor for both of these scales, so you can use this in replace of a minor scale or with a minor chord.
I hope this helps.

Dunno if it's already been posted, but i made up a kind cool diminished arpeggio lick:
--------9t15p12p9-----12t18p15p12----15t21p18p15----12t18p15p12
------11------------14--------------17--------------14-----------
----12------------15--------------18--------------15------------
t=tap
p=pull off

Haven´t you got some tremolo picking and string skipping/fast picking, ... exercises????
I think this could be very interesting.
Put the tempo and the %th.
This will help me for sure.
Thanks
