Ya, for these sweeps, I'm unclear as to how the picking goes. Can someone clear that up for me?

There is no particular way that you have to pick. Its a personal preference. Its sweep picking of course so its like playing a chord but slower so that you can hear every not and after every note you sort of mute it so that it doesnt ring like a chord. Some people hammer on the notes, and some people pick, its all a matter of what works best for you. I personally hammer on so that you just have to pick one note per string. If you have further questions on how it goes just ask.

the scale thingy I use
the pattern I ALWAYS use and havent gotten bored of yet is something like:
E:12-13--14-15-16
B:12-13--14-15-16
G:12-13--14-15-16 ETC;
D:
A:
E:
Thats not the only position I use, I move it all around the neck. I just use combos of those notes on those fret positionings, and everyone thinks the licks sound awesome.

I had posted this elsewhere before, but since there have been so many questions regarding scales I figured I'd toss em in here too. There are a few fairly exotic scales broken down in here, have fun with them.
I've begun thinking of scales as "chordscales" recently. Triads, the simplest chords can be broken from any chordscale. Every scale has a set of chords unique to that scale. We find those chords by using every other interval, in groups of 3. So the C major scale will have an interval structure of 1-2-3-4-5-6-7(c d e f g a b). So if we break it down into triads it goes something like this.
1-3-5 = C E G = Cmajor
2-4-6 = D F A = Dminor
3-5-7 = E G B = Eminor
4-6-1 = F A C = Fmajor
5-7-2 = G B D = Gmajor
6-1-3 = A C E = Aminor
7-2-4 = B D F = Bm-5
This can be done with any scale, below let's look at the C harmonic minor 1-2-b3-4-5-b6-7 (C D Eb F G Ab B)
1-b3-5 = C Eb G = Cminor
2-4-b6 = D F Ab = Dm-5
b3-5-7 = Eb G B = D# aug
4-b6-1 = F Ab C = Fminor
5-7-2 = G B D = Gmajor
b6-1-b3 = Ab C Eb = G#major
7-2-4 = B D F = Bm-5
It is more important to concentrate on playing over chords, rather than "in key" when soloing over any progression. Just use the chord being played and arpeggiate it, you can't go wrong if you do this. Alot of the time you will wind up just playing different modes of a particular chordscale anyway, especially if your progression is something common like Cmajor Eminor Gmajor, you'd arpeggiate them all in the key of C major, Ionian, Phrygian, Mixolydian. Another reason to follow chord progressions rather than modes all in one key is that every scale has a set of chords unique to that scale. However the chords individually may fit into many chordscales.
The chordscales below can be shifted to any key. Keep the interval structures and shift positions accordingly.
Code:
C Major modes
intervals: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7
half-steps: 2-2-1-2-2-2-1
notes: C,D,E,F,G,A,B
Order of Modes
Ionian
Dorian
Phrygian
Lydian
Mixolydian
Aeolian (natural minor)
Locrian

Just a few posts up, the C major and it's 7 modes. Also posted on the first page of this post, there's also a link on this page that goes to a place that has just about any scale you can think of mapped out, posted by shredisnotdead. Open your eyes......

www.wholenote.com is so very very useful. It has chord charts, scale charts, and even arpeggio charts, plus thousands of lessons

wholenote.com is awesome. Check this link out, it talks about the CAGED system. It will teach you to visualize every scale and chord in any key in any position of the fretboard. A guitarist should never have to change positions for anything, unless he/she needs to get to a higher/lower note or for dramatic effect. Cool lesson.

I would love to get a good finger tapping exercise, if anyone has one...
Also for the theory thread one thing I always wanted to know was what scales go well with other scales?

Well, each scale is unique. The question would be better asked: What scales go well with which chords? Chords themselves are built from scales, using formulatic intervals. Every scale has a set of chords unique to that scale. The chords themselves may be constructed using many different scales, so in turn when played you have a wide variety to choose from when you solo over them depending on the emotion you're trying to convey. This is why it's important to learn as many different scales as possible, don't limit yourself to pentatonics.
Buy this book

and this book

They are incredibly powerfull tools.

I'll post some great fingertapping videos/tabs tomorow for you. As for the theory as to what scales go with what, if you read on the first page on how you link up the scales, it should answer your question. PM me if you need assisstance.

Sweep every decending and acsending part. pick the 12-8 and 12-10 and 10-8-5 and 5-4 and 4-7-5-4-5 parts
THis sweep takes quite a while to perfect, i can barely do it perfectly.
Please dont steal this sweep, its part of my bands songs. WHICH are copy righted, lol, sorry for being so un-trusting.
This sweep sounds sorta vivaldi-ish to me

How would you use the DIMINSHED scale in writing songs

you wont use the diminished scale for a full song no matter how extreme you are, it should be used in small doses and only to add tension, you should always have it over a dim chord (vii of your major scale) and then return to the relative minor or major of the respective scale. For example in E minor you progression might be
Em, Bm, D, F#Dim 1 bar each
You would use E nat minor scale over first 3 bars than use F#dim scale over bar 4 but would run back into E nat minor for bar 5. The dim scale works better in small doses than overdoing it.

Diminished means you flatten the 5th augmented means you sharpen the 5th. Example in G Major, your chord tones are G - the root, B -the 3rd, D -the 5th.
To make the chord diminished you drop the 5th one half step, to C#, to augment the chord you raise the 5th one half step to Eb.
G Major---G dim--G Aug
e-3--------3-------3-------
b-3--------2-------4-------
g-4--------4-------4-------
d-5--------5-------5-------
a--------------------------
e--------------------------
Pretty simple really, just fancy names for raising and lowering 1 note.

Allright, so I decided to put all Scales and Sweep tabs into powertabs along with a bunch of cool little sweep runs I made. Any other suggestions to put into it before I get started?

You can get a 30 day trial from mysongbook.com, just download it from there and hey presto. I've had mine for longer than 30 days and it still works. Powertab is much better though.

Does that limit only apply when creating a GP tab?

yeah, also if you make any modifications to a tab you downloaded and save it, it cuts off the bars that come after 24.

I have a request: How about some cool penatonic runs or something along those lines. I find there alot of sweep runs, but when it comes to other runs theres not too many.

A little Theory application:
Learn the scales up each string, one at a time. As mentioned numerous times before goto the following site, and take a peek at the C Major scale: http://www.looknohands.com/chordhou...r/index_rb.html
The numbers you're looking at are the scales intervals. Hint, start at 1 and go in order. The reason some of the other scales have intervals that have a little 'b' or a '#' next to them is because they are lower or higher compared to the C major scale. Those are sharps and flats, the reason they exist is for some reason all nomanclature is based on the C Major Scale, that's just the way it is.
So, what determines if it's b or #? Well, the C major scale has an interval structure of 1-2-3-4-5-6-7, it is composed of the 'natural' notes, starting on C. C-D-E-F-G-A-B. If we look at that on the fretboard, we have an interval structure as follows below starting on the 3rd fret of the A string.
A-|-3-5-7-8-10-12-14-(15, root, perfect eighth)-
Notice that between 7 and 8 (14 and 15, or an octave lower on the same string, 2 and 3. There is only one fret difference. That's because out of the 12 notes that exist (A - A#/Bb - B - C - C#/Db - D - D#/Eb - E - F - F#/Gb - G - G#/Ab) there is no E#/Fb or B#/Cb, these notes do not exist. Those notes that are the same, A#/Bb for example, are called "ENHARMONICS". What Determines which is used is whether you're going up or down, down is flat, up is sharp. Each of these 12 notes are 1/2 step away from each other. 1/2 steps are the building blocks of music, so to speak. Knowing that there are no enharmonics between B and C, or E and F we can determine that the C major scale is of the following structure, using half steps 2-2-1-2-2-2-1. We can determine this because we know that each half step is 1 fret, so
c-d = 2 (1/2 steps)
on the fretboard:
A-|-3-5 (2 frets)
d-e = 2 (1/2 steps)
A-|-5-7 (2 frets)
e-f = 1 (1/2 step)
A-|-7-8
Get the picture?
You'll notice that you can play any scale and any mode in any position on the fretboard. Once you start to visualize this in your mind a wonderful thing has begun and a whole endless universe of possibilities will open up.

Pretty simple, but good (mellow) sounding 6-string sweep:
Dmaj7+9
e|-12 nine
B|-10 fifth
G|-9- nine
D|-11 major seventh
A|-9- third
E|-10 root
If you sweep it all the way through and hit the high and low E strings both on the down sweep and up sweep, it adds up to 8th note triplets in 4/4. If you only pick the outer notes one way, it can be 8th notes in 5/4.

Simple but effective, however it can be made even simpler. This is how I'd play it:
Code:
e-------15h18^20--p16p15------------------------------------
b----16-------------------16---------------------
g-17-------------------------17--------------------
d-------------------------------17--------------------
a----------------------------------18p15---------
E--------------------------------------------
e---------9h11-13p9-------------------9h11-12p11------------
b-------11----------11--------------10------------10---------
g-----10---------------10---------9-------------------9--------
d---11-------------------11-----11---------------------11------
a-13-----------------------13-12-------------------------12----
e-----------------------------------------------------------

I thought the same thing about a year ago. I've been playing for 9 years and I only really started to figure out how to sweep after 8 of those years. I guess it just came to me because instead of going all out attack on 6-string sweeps - which I'd been trying to do for years - I set my goals a little lower. For example, the above sweep can be split into mini-sweeps that can be practised individually. When you get more confident, combine them together and et viola!
Try breaking it down into smaller parts like these:
Code:
---------
---------
------12-
----14---
-/15-----
---------
-----13h17p13-----
---15--------15---
-14------------14-
------------------
------------------
------------------
Gradually, you'll find yourself being able to pull these off cleanly and then you can expand the sweeps as your skill increases. Remember to take them slowly at first!

This is an exercise, based off of a whole-tone scale, I like to use to work up my sweeping skills:
--------------------------------------
--------------------------------------
-12-----12-10------10-8-----8-6----6-
------13---------11--------9------7--
----14---------12--------10------8---
--------------------------------------
...and so on. I guess this would be geared more toward working up to a more difficult level of sweeping and focusing on the clarity of the sweeping...regardless I think it sounds pretty good. Somestimes I'll continue a bar like that with:
-----------------------------------
-----------------------------------
-18-----18-15------15-12------12-
------20---------17---------14----
----22---------19---------16------
-----------------------------------
...and so on, that one being based off of somesort of diminished scale.

Can anybody give some tips for performig a 'standard' sweep + tapping a note (like fret 21, 20 or so)?
Does it involve a certain motion or trick to do it quickly and clean?

do u mean tapping and sweeping at the same time or tappoign AND sweeping??
anyway for just start slowly and make the movement a natural movement wich u dont have to think for and then get to speed.
if u mean tabbind ans sweeping at the same time try this.
its from nuno bettencourts get the funk out

haha drunk bastards,
anyways, i think he means tapping a note at the peaking of your sweep like
------------12-17t20t17p12----------------------
---------13-----------------13------------------
------14-----------------------14---------------
-------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------
or my favorite

-------9--------------------9---------------------
----10-----------------------10-------------------
-12-----------------------------12----------------
---------------------------------------------------
the T's being the tapping part.

So to do a sweep do you pick the notes while fingering at the same time but only using one stroke?(doesn't get it)

yea, you pick an arpeggio, you have to kinda angle the pick and just sweep it accross the strings, while fingering each note, make sure you lift each finger as you do it, so you only have one note playing at a time, not any other notes bleeding through to make a chord or somthing. i hope you can understand that.

I can do three and four strings sweeps, but I can't figure out how to incorporate any more strings than that into them. Can someone explain how to do five and six string sweeps or point me in the direction of a website, etc. ? I skimmed the thread and I didn't see anything on it...

Just break down 6 string sweeps into sections. Example :
Section 1
Code:
-----------------------
-----------------------
-------------12--------
----------12-----------
-------14--------------
-12h15-----------------
Section 2
Code:
----12-----------------
-13----13--------------
----------12-----------
-------------14--------
-----------------------
-----------------------
Just practice and combine them together and in the end you'll be playing this.
Code:
-------------------12-------------
----------------13----13----------
-------------12----------12-------
----------12----------------12----
-------14----------------------14-
-12h15----------------------------

Didn't look like anyone talked about parallel octaves, so I'm going to talk about that because it makes sweeping easier.
Here is a G major arpeggio: always G B D
-------------------------7-10---------------------------------------
----------------h------8--h-----------------------------------------
---------------4-7--------------------------------------------------
-----h------5-------------------------------------------------------
----2-5-------------------------------------------------------------
-3------------------------------------------------------------------
On the way down, replace the hammer with pull off. So easy. Note that the next octave is an octave away: first two frets / two strings, then 3 frets / 2 strings.
Do the same moves on these:
A minor
--------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------
-----h--------------------------------------------------------------
----3-7-------------------------------------------------------------
-5------------------------------------------------------------------
B dim
--------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------
-----h--------------------------------------------------------------
----5-8-------------------------------------------------------------
-7------------------------------------------------------------------
A minor
--------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------
-----h--------------------------------------------------------------
----7-12------------------------------------------------------------
-8------------------------------------------------------------------
Remember you can parallel any two-string parttern, as long as you pair strings 1& 2, 3&4, and 5&6.

In most of the sweeps in fact as I think of it now all the sweeps I practice have barred whatevers. What I need to know is in 4,5,6 string sweeps are you suppose to barre and if yes how do you go about doing this cause I can do it but I don't know if I'm doing it properly.

When you barre, use a rolling motion so that the notes don't sound as you move to the next string. It's a hard technique but practise it slowly at first in order to master the correct motion. Then once you've mastered the actually act at a slow pace, you can move onto gaining speed with your sweeping.
Of course, if you try to sweep like Muhammed Suicmez on your first attempt it's going to sound like the death throes of a baboon in labour so set your sights a little lower at first. You could try practising the rolling motion on 3-string sweeps at first. Try the following example for your index finger:
Code:
-------12h15p12----------12h15p12----
----12----------12----12----------12-
-12----------------12----------------
-------------------------------------
-------------------------------------
-------------------------------------
And then the next example for your ring or middle fingers:
Code:
----------12h15p12---------
-------14----------14------
----14----------------14---
-14---------------------14-
---------------------------
---------------------------
Then you should have the necessary skills to attempt 5 and 6-string sweeps like:
Code:
-------------------12h15p12-------------------
----------------12----------12----------------
-------------12----------------12-------------
----------14----------------------14----------
-------14----------------------------14-------
-12h15----------------------------------15p12-
