Exclamation Major and Minor Scales!

Reading these shouldn't be a problem. To play them use alternate picking (that means your pick follows the movement of "down, up, down, up". As with connecting them, this is how it is done:

Order of modes.

Ionian (major)
Dorian
Phrygian
lydian
Mixolydian
Aeolian (minor)
Locrian

Each scale starts on the 2nd note of the previous scale. The order of the scales is always the same. The only thing that changes is the position of them which changes along with the key.


So in this attachment, its in Am so we start with Aeolian on the A on the big E. Locrian is the next scale (see the pictures to connect). If say you where composing a solo for a riff in F major, you would place Ionian on F on the big E string.

Harmoic Minor Scales!

Four Harmonic Minor scales. These are very common in metal. Play them to hear why:

better you pick both the notes...cuz it will help in adding momentum to your sweep when you are returning with an upstroke

If it has 2 notes on the same string (during one stroke) then its not a sweep. And oyu can really make your own sweep easyly. Sweeps are arpreggos, meaning 3 root notes in a chord. So take your favorite chord and make a sweep out of it using the arpreggo.

Put simply, yes.

Most solos are based around scales. Metal scalled based solos are usually based around the pentatonic scales and sometimes blues scales but other players like to experiment with other rarley used scales.

ALL solos are in scales. They sound good because they are in scale (wich should be in key).

Darko I looked on your major scale. It's played in C right? When I play it in A it goes like this

--5-7-
-4-5-7-
-4-7-8-
-4-7-8-
-5-8-
-4-5-

And, when I put it in, for example, C, I just go up on the 8th fret of the 6th string and play it exactly the same. Is that wrong?

I got the scales on cyberfret.com...

I don't fully understand your question but I think this is the anwser your looking for. If you move the scale anywhere you always play it the same. No scale has an actual "home key" where its originated for. Lets say you see a scale in C and you want to play it in E, you play it exactly the same as you would in C.

In no where on there does it say "Iolian Scale". They post a major scale, but not Iolian. Those are more for traning than usage besides the blues.

Major and Iolian is not the same thing. Those are major and minor Pentitonic scales, very differnt.

Do you guys want me to post the tones, and semi tones for each type of scale, so you can build the scales?

Example:

Major scale:
1 - 1 - 1/2 - 1 - 1 - 1- 1/2
(1= tone, and 1/2= semi tone)

on sweeps:

I've seen some exercices on the net, i'm learning them (but i'm not very good and I hardly play for 2 years, not even)

I understand sweeping and stuff...
But does anyone has a video of the left/right hand while sweeping slow and fast?

this would really help alot...

lefthand 1stfinger on 5, 3rd on 7, and righthand index on 10, righthand 2nd on 9
(use same fingering all the way through)

Different stroke possibilities at sweeping

Ok... I've been through some exercices but I see different possibilities...
Which one is the best?
For example:

Most beginners should start off wit ha full 5 or 6 string sweep to learn because alot of them have those patterns in them that you posted.

But still, the highest 3 strings are the same in 6 string sweeps, so that still doesn't solve my problem...

Which way of picking the highest string is the best?

a sweep is nearly always an arpeggio, but an arpeggio is'nt allways a sweep, e.g.
|-0h4h7t12-| would bre an arpeggio, because that are the tones of E Major, but i think you agree the this is not a sweep. a sweep is anything played at one note per string eventually a hammer on/pull off on the first/last tone and while playing it you just move your pick as if you play a normal chord, but play each note single

I reccomend that all beginners in sweep picking check out John Petrucci's Rock Discipline video/dvd. He covers the basics and gives you some easy sweeps to get started with. If your more advanced it's great as well, because he throws in several hard sweeps.

a quick question - is it good practice to also 'reverse sweep'? Ie down stroke the top note of the scale then sweep back down?

All exercises should be practiced forewards and backwords.

bear with me guys, i'm not quite sure about the concept of sweeping yet, although it seems like it ought to be fairly simple to understand.

can i sweep, say, the ionian scale? somebody said one note per string, but can i practice picking once and hammering twice per string? i mean, yeah, i can practice that :P and have been, but is that considered a sweep?

it seems to be helping me either way, but i just wanted to make sure i know what an actual sweep is. thanks

Swep whatever you want. When you have more than 1 note per string I always use hammer-ons and pull-offs. Except the highest and lowest string in the arpeggio cause that keeps my timing right.

i can sweep up scales pretty well even when each string has 2 hammer ons, but i find it nearly impossible to pick down the same sweeps with any sort of speed.

are there any tips that i'm missing with pickoff speed? when i started, i'd put all my fingers down, but now i barely put the next finger right behind my pickoff finger before i pick it off, and it still seems impossible to do quickly

or, do people just not do it that quickly down scales?

i'm getting pretty frustrated.. advice/sympathy would be good thx

On a sweep, you shouldn't let the other notes sound the same time(like a chord), it will sound messy, so yeah, lift your fingers of the note after you play it.

Ionian
Dorian
Phrygian
lydian
Mixolydian
Aeolian
Locrian

Each scale starts on the 2nd note of the previous scale. In any key, the pattern is always the same and this is important to know, it opens up alot of notes.

just goin through this thread again, and there seems to be a misunderstanding.

yes, ionian = major, and that scale is in fact the same thing (almost anyway) as darko's major scale. it looks different, because, as you know, you can play a note on one string, and play it on a low fret on the next higher string. that's what they've done there.. they've also left out a few notes, and darko's covers every note in the scale.

Yeah, the scales that I posted seem to be the best. Most people leave out notes, mix it up, ect.

Im planning some time soon to take all the sweeps and extra scales that people posted (and some of my own) and just make them all into one big post on the first page so people don't have to go through and find them.

that'd be pretty helpful. it's always nice to cure boredom with a new scale.

i have a question about sweeps, which i've just started to practice in the past few days. when i start out, really slowly, i basically just pick each string and it's not much of a "strum". i just can't do it that fast yet, and my roommate said he thinks that i'm doing it wrong by not trying to move my pick hand completely evenly like you do with a chord. i kind of jump my pick hand to the next string. will i just be able to strum down the strings in time if i keep practicing it this way? do i just not have the speed yet? or do i have to practice in a very even "strum"?

Eh, you strum like you would a "rolled" chord, but after you play the note you're supposed to lift your fingers. Ya, know, so only one note is heard at a time.

I just found out something really cool. For us beginners, Flesh and the Power it Holds by Death is a good song to practice sweeping.

The other day I was dicking around with some tapping stuff I had in my head when I decided to tap out an arpeggio real fast. I played something like this:


B |---------------------------t-----19p12h15p12--|
F#|--------------------t-----18p13--t-------------|
D |-------------t-----18p14-----------------------|
A |------t-----18p14------------------------------|
E |-h12-19p15------------------------------------|
A |-----------------------------------------------|

Then go back up to the E-string using the same pattern. It's played at the same speed as if you were sweeping it (the notes must also be distinct like a sweep) with the taps effectivly taking the place of the pick striking the strings.

Anyway, I was wondering if anybody could give me an example of any guitarists who've used this technique or any more examples of it.

This is not a sweeppicking arpeggio but its a string skipping one that mimics an arpeggio.

Now You can choose to do hammer-ons or pulloffs or pick all the notes execpt for the note on the 21 fret.Thats usually a tap.

i recently got the nack of sweeping, but it seems that i can pull off an upstroke sweep almost flawlessly, yet, it hard as hell to do the same arpeggio pattern with a down stroke. any suggestions?

I follow one rule... play what sounds good and if it sounds good, keep playing it.

I came up with something similar (although a little simpler) about a year ago only with -3/5h8- on the low E and -9h12p9- on the high E. Yours sounds way cooler though because of the tap slides.

I have a question about fingering.

When you have a basic sweep like this:

|-17p12-------------|-------------10-13-|
|-------14----------|----------10-------|
|----------14-------|-------10----------|
|-------------14----|----12-------------|
|----------------16-|-12----------------|
|-------------------|-------------------|

What is teh best way to finger thoes 14s and 10s? With one finger (making it a bit harder to mute the notes after you play them) or with sepereate finger (making it harder to actualy finger the notes)?

i have a question too

when i see (advanced) players solo, they move all over the fretboard instead of playing a single scale. How do they acomplish this? Do they play the scales of the chord progresion or are they playing different scales from the same key all over the fretboard?

I barre them with one finger and employ a sort of rolling motion that allows you to fret the notes easily while still muting the notes once they've been played. As always, it takes a lot of practise to get this down perfectly but in my opinion it's the best method once you've mastered it.

SpikyHairz: They'll just be playing the same scale but in a different position up or down the fret board. You should learn a scale for the whole fretboard and not just in one position. It will take time to know it off by heart but it will allow you to play a lot more fluidly.

yes, I know just what you mean. thats what I use now, but it is not perfect.

And you can use something called a secondary dominat to move to a different scale.

Depends on their style. I show in the first page of the thread universal order of scales and if you memorize them and are able to play them in any key then you should be able to horizontaly rape the neck.

The "Correct" way is to bar the 3 notes in a row. For me, if there are 2 or more notes in a row like that I bar it. But whatever makes it most easy for you.

In my opinion Jason Becker is kind of arpeggios. U should all have heard serrana by now (not the acoustic one but the video) which is called serrana_part_1. The whole song is arpeggios and its one of the most beautiful things ever written. I dont really wanna tab it out its really long u can just download it at mysongbook.com or .ca i forget.
