Favorite Death Metal Vocalist
One thing I notice in a death metal band, other than the brutal pounding double bass and hard speedy guitar riffs, is the vocals. I respect death metal vocals more than any other vocal style known and I practice day in and day out trying to improve my death voice. I prefer extremely deep and demonic vocals that sounds like someone is trying to hork up Satan and bitch-slap the guy. Here's a small list of my favorite singers:
1. Nathan Gearhart -Vehemence
2. Travis Ryan -Cattle Decapitation
3. Matt Harvey -Exhumed
4. John Gallagher -Dying Fetus
5. Lord Worm -old Cryptopsy

I find it really odd as to how many people really dislike Chuck's singing.......i don't think i ever had a problem with it, and my favorite type of singing is immense brutality lowness.
I don't really classify Chuck's vocals as Death Metal.......nor do i really consider Death a Death Metal band (even with the incredible irony). I think of Death more as a thrash band, or possibly just traditional Heavy Metal that paved the way for Death Metal. With this in mind, i think Chuck's singing is probably the best possible for his music.

I can't believe only one person said Nathan Gearhart from Vehemence was good. He's great. If you haven't heard Vehemence, I highly suggest you do so. Plus Travis Ryan from Cattle Decapitation is very impressive.

On the Chuck critisizm I would have to disagree. I think he has a fantastic voice. Unlike most extreme metal vocalists, he can really express his emotions which is rare in this monotone vocal genre.
Id like to also say that I cut my finger and it hurts really fucking bad.

Deicide's Glen benton.
Internal Suffering..(vocals sound like they may be processed..)

Out of all of them though, Frank Mullen is my favorite, followed by

On the chuck issue... I think chuck's vocals are/were great. I dont consider them death metal though, not on the more recent albums anyway. But i like the vocals most on symbolic.
As for angela, i never really considered her vocals as death metal... but i guess now that i think about it they are.
Atifman: heres a better question. How many chicks can do what she does and look the way she does at the same time? heh. I havnt seen much of her but the picture in the Wages of sin album is damn hot!! |

Actually, old MC vocalist was Brett Hoffman (their first 3 albums), Jason did vocals only for Eternal and In Cold Blood.. before Brett came back for The Fine Art of Murder and Envenomed and got kicked out again - replaced by Hate Plow vocalist Kyle Symons who did vocals on The Will To Kill.
Btw, he does vocals for Divine Empire too, you might wanna check that band out if you like his vocals so much |

I've been doing vocals for around 13/14 years. The first 2 were hard, but after that and now to this day, I can do some pretty fucked up shit...Only if you guys could hear me!...

I never liked Karl Sanders as a vocalist, he pronounces words weird and it's hard to hear what he's saying even if you have the lyrics in front of you (i think how clear you can hear the lyrics is a factor in deciding how good a deathmetal vocalist is)

Correct...but Jasons vocals on Eternal own any of hoffmans work  Divine Empire does kick ass, and I highly recommend them to any death metal fans. Their songs are a bit shorter than most bands, keeping it kinda fresh. His vocals still rule to... He does a lot more high pitched screaming, instead of just the low stuff in MC. |

Speaking of pronouncing words weird, the singer of Graveworm does it to the extreme. I heard them cover Christian Woman by Type O Negative (a song I know every word to.) I tried to like it but I had to laugh. Instead of "wall" he said it like"wallll..e" and fall was "fallll..e." He puts a "e" after every word. But other than than that he is a really good deep vocalist.

Ruben and Wayne are both doing separate projects (soon). Wayne is supposedly working with Brain's brother, who taught Brain how to play guitar in the first place.

It has probably been mentioned before, but Juan Urteaga (Vile) does a damn great job. Also the guy in Severed Savior. I saw this band live during the Bloodletting tour and the vocalist is awesome, he's got a much more powerful voice than on the actual cd's.
EDIT : Oh yeah, and I think one of the worst singer ever is the guy in Macabre (only when he's screaming like a girl).

Yep, Aaron Strong (guitars) and Juan Urteaga left. They have been replaced now. James Lee (vocalist for Origin) does the vocals live now. They are still going on strong, though. I'm not sure about them touring. My guess is they'll take a break after touring for the lengthy amount on time that they did with Cannibal Corpse and all those other bands.

Jay from Lust of Decay is a awesome vocalist. He sounds a little like John from Dying Fetus but I like Jay better. He pulls off some awesome gruts. Festering Anal Vomit is a awesome song.

Dissection: As far as I know, the only album off of Edge of Sanity I've seen Mikael on is Crimson I, making a guest appearance along with a few others. By the way, I envy you for hearing Mikael on his Katatonia appearances, none of the cd stores around here carry the older ones  What albums by Katatonia does he appear on?
Drag the Waters: I love Mikaels Vocals on Bloodbath, especially their new one, Ressurection through Carnage. The lyrics aren't THAT desireable, but they're far from the worst lyrics I've ever heard. Of the lyrics i like off of RTC is " So you die " because its so fucking blunt.

I totally agree... Chris Barnes sounds like he's trying to hard to make the low vocals. I like Nihilist's vocalist, he is pretty cool. Prostitute Difigurement's vocalist is sick, and so is Retch's, I can't beleive those vocals aren't processed.

The guitars are very complex too, which really bring out the vocals. I dont know why the vocals would have to be "sick," nor do i understand what the hell that even means, but i think the guy can sing great for Death Metal.
