I don't know what 16ths are or whatever, but if I put my metronome at 160, and can do 4 strokes per count (RLRL), so that's 640 BPM, for around 30 seconds.
Good enough for the tunes we're writing right now.

Thanks. I don't understand all that 8ths, 16th stuff, but I intend to learn.
I can go faster, but I find I lack power and I don;'t have the same strength in the strikes. I just started drumming and I only have about a year or more under my belt.
Any suggestions?
I'll be getting that Flo video when it comes out. Other than that, I don't know any exercises.
Any suggestions would be cool.

Each of the blips (or claps or whatever) on your metronome is a "beat". And usually 4 of those "beats" makes a "bar".

The number of times you hit the cymbal or drum per beat defines the half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth, thiry-second [etc] notes you play.

So, for example, if you're hitting your hi-hat twice for every blip, then that's 2 (hits) times 4 (beats in a bar) = 8th notes. This is the most common beat you'll hear in everything from Eye Of The Tiger to Angel Of Death and beyond.

When you're playing a single stroke roll (RLRLRLRLRLRL) on your double kick, then you're normally playing 8th notes with each foot. So 8 + 8 = 16th notes. Or 16 hits per bar.

If your metronome is set at 160 and you're playing 16th notes, that's still 160bpm. The actual amount of hits per second or minute is pretty much irrelevant unless you're into world records or whatever.

There are a number of helpful sites online devoted to helping develop various exersizes, be creative with Google - you'll be amazed.

Hope this is of some use to you.

and a quite nit pick don't say 640 BPM, what you meant I beleive is 640 HITS per minute.

if you were doing 640 bpm 16ths I would suggest you buy a drumometer and a video camera record yourself and send it off to NAMM, that is almost twice as fast as the current world record, and you would get lots of free drum shit and endorsements....

I would also bow down and admit unworthiness with my feet.

Man, I don't know what's is going on, but my Left foot is fucked! For the last week and a half I haven't been able to keep a steady beat within a certain range.
I can do 16ths anywhere up to 145 BPM, and then I start to lose it.
Then once I get to 165, I'm OK again.
I'm kinda stressed, because most of our tunes coast at about 150, and I've been having a hard time in there.
Any suggestions?

Quite frankly,

you all sound like good drummers, but in my opinion Behemoths drummer is the most baddest fucking drummer ever. His double bass sounds so freaking phenomenal.

I've listened to quite a few bands, and have never heard anything like this, simply uncomparable.
If you can drum like him, I give you props.

take a break from drumming for a few days, and I mean a complete break, occasionally your legs need rest, especially if you have been pushing your limits, I have had this problem, and other drummers I know have had this too, usually a few days rest cures this, I had this happen to my Triplets especially, doing fast CoB type triplets, I was completely sweet, fast and tight, then when I had to slow down to do some ManOwaR stuff, I couldn't do it for shit, a quick break and then some practice and they were back on form.

there are too many great Death metal drummers to say one is uncomparable to ther other I would say most of the Death drummers are on the same tier, although there are some better than others like say comparing Paul from the ' Corpse to Flo from the Crypt' but generally they are mostly equal.

as for playing like behemoth, maybe I should try it one day.

Good call. (NZ black metal drumm) about taking a break.
I think I figured out the prob. I had 2 weeks holidays, so we recorded our demo. I was sitting in front of my computer from 11am till 1am, pretty much every day.
I didn't notice it the first week, but I noticed that I pinched a nerve in my back from all that sitting.
I think it was from that, because my back is feeling all better now, and I went down for a practice and everything was killer.
Back to normal. Fuckin A.

hehe not alot, just modding the fuck outa my kit at the mo, if you are interested, the roddy boards are back up now (finally,) I will be doing some dummy drum recordings tommorow, because I have never recorded myself properly, so we are doing dummy runs so when we go into a serious studio, we don't have to piss about with trivial things that will make the recording sound shit.

Hello all...
I am new to this forum. I've been playing for many years, and am hearing more and more bands come out with extremely fast double bass. I have a question for you veteran double bassers. Are these guys using specific "methods", such as heel-toe? I do not use any such method, but I've never actually clocked my DB. Are these guys using these tricks/methods, or straight up double bass? Anyway, good forum, and thanks in advance for any responses.

Most extreme drummers are doing regular double bass. When they are playing really fast speeds like 220bpm and up, most play using the muscles in their hips. Ive been trying it lately. But when your playing fast, try to use as less movement as possible. Dont waste extra energy.

it isn't your Hip muscles, it is those big muscle groups on your thighs, they are among the strongest in your body (from supporting your weight all day making you walk etc) you are dead right with the whole not moving thing, the less movement the better, the less energy you are wasting with unnecersary motion, Mike Mangini recomend to train your legs to do this, look at your knees while playing, so you can see what height you are moving, and you if you are moving lots you can counter this. Although I confess at slow speeds I do lift quite a bit, but that is more for timings sake, when I go up to my highest speeds, my knees are probably moving at most an inch or 2 up and down.

as for specific techniques, I use heel up, I can do a pretty badass heel toe with my right foot but I cannot do the same with my left, so I can do triplets pretty quick going: RRLRRLRRLRRLRRLRRL etc. but I cannot do the RRLLRRLLRRLL fast as fuck bass drum roll, although I am learning, just not very quickly.

I used to have that problem also. It has to do with balance. You must be fairly new to drumming. When i first got my double pedal is when i had that problem but i got the technique and im fine now. I love playing the end of Slayer- Angel of Death where its just double bass alone for a few seconds then the hi-hat and snare come in.

oops

I though you mispelled Bpm as I was like eh???

that means a healthy 210 bpm 16'ths btw if you can keep that up for a good minute then that would give you a very respectable score in the WFD battle of the feet, 2nd or 3rd place at this years NAMM.

all i know, i was in doublebass slump until i tightened my kickdrum real tight, now i can roll with alot more control and speed, what i did when i started was loosen the tension both on the pedal and the kickdrum, now both are just about the same setting as when i did single.

i think getting started had to do with training manual foot dexterity and eliminating bounce, then as your left foot gets stronger you can slowly tighten everything and adjust to the tension, this made it alot easier for me

Would it help me to practice my double strokes and double bass, if i loosen my spring tension a bit? It's pretty much to the max now.
The problem is, if i practice double (by trying heel-toe) that my second stroke is significantly less loud than the first one. And when i try double bass (with the flat foot technique) i feel like i have to put too much pressure on the pedal.

im a long way from left foot heel/toe so.....but my right foot, with heel toe, is more defined with alot of tension in the pedal and kickdrum, so i would presume high tension with getting those heel/toe db rolls

I don't know but live we play a song we recorded at about 200, at about 220 or so and some of the double parts in that are for about 20-30 seconds long so yeah!

Yes, i know what you are talking about, in one of our songs we have about 200 bpm, too... so, it is difficult to hold that tempo, isnt it?

it is even harder when you speed it up live!!!

it is hard enough at practice at the right tempo but live it manages to go up by about 20 bpm

My top comfortable speed is about 210bpm 16ths. Slowly reaching the unholy speeds.

My feet are really slow, in comparison to my hands. I get to maybe 160..Or so? 16th's at least..and that tires me pretty quick. Have a lot of practice to do there but my hands are pretty good, I can break 260 on one hand (8th's of course). It's just a hard trip, constantly practicing feet and although it may feel like there is no effect (because it's not immediate) it surely comes later when you attempt higher speeds and feel it.

It's funny, if you read back in this thread I said I could do 160bpm 16ths comfortably. Now, 2 years later, i'm at 210. Now I admit i'm not the drummer that plays all the time and practices nonstop. 50bpm in 2 years is good enough for me though. I'll be lucky to get up to 235bpm by next january.

i think getting started had to do with training manual foot dexterity and eliminating bounce, then as your left foot gets stronger you can slowly tighten everything and adjust to the tension, this made it alot easier for me

I thought about tightening my basshead more. But I'm afraid I'll tune it too tight and bend the ring out of shape. I did that with one of my toms on my old kit. OOPS.

tightening the outer head seems to help a little bit also.

There's not really any other way

I'll be putting two videos online the coming weeks. One to show off my new pedals (Axis!) once I got used to them (they arrived yesterday), with heel-toe. Another vid to show that my old pedals still work properly (also with heel-toe), for potential buyers.
