Guys, i want to try and make a 'Ran-MetalTabs-timeline' type thing, with info about each persons' ran etc., so if you'd like it to appear (if i get enough people, that is ), just PM me with details such as:
date ordered and date received
brief specs
links to a few pictures (if possible)
anything interesting about the ran etc.
I think it'd be a neat little reference to see who's got what

I sent in a quote for a Ran with the following specs:
-Gibson Explorer Body
-Set Neck
-22 Frets (Gotoh Standard)
-Diamond Inlays (i like them on my other ran)
-Ken Lawrence style Headstock
-Solid white finish w/ black pinstripes
-Seymour Duncan 59/Custom 5 pickups
-Mahogany body, Maple neck, Ebony fingerboard
-2 x volume, 3 way switch
let's take bets on how much it will cost.

If that's the "little '59" SD pickup, i'd strongly recommend against it, i had one, and thought it was utter rubbish!

no, the name of the pickup is the Custom 5
and it's just the neck 59 humbucker, which i've loved in nearly every guitar i've put it in.

Oooohh, way off with the 1700 bet.
what can i take off to get it down to 1300 euro? i'm thinking change to a natural see thru black finish and take the binding off.

no binding will probaly drop alot of the price, making bindings is a lot of work. routing and glueing etc. i dno about paints, but 1 colour is always cheaper than having 2 colours.

I know I knocked this company in the past 'cause everyone seems to be getting one but I am thinking about a 7 string guitar. I'm considering this;
R or L handed » right handed
Scale length » 25"
Body shape » Cruiser
Construction » neck thru
Body material » alder
Top wood options » no
Body binding » top & back
Binding material » MOP jeweled
Pickup configuration » H-S-H
Finish » satin (black)
Custom finish » none
Headstock shape » Jackson RR-1
Neck material » maple/mahogany
Headstock » regular
Truss rod cover » wooden
Headstock finish » match body
Neck finish » clear satin
Fingerboard material » ebony
Number of frets » 24
Fret size » Dunlop 6150
Fingerboard inlays (MOP) » custom
Custom inlays » (P) on 1fret (.) on 3fret (I) on 5fret (.) on 7fret (R) on 9fret...(MOP)
Inlay at 12th fret (MOP) » pot leaf centered across 11, 12, 13 frets
Fingerboard side inlays » plastic
Fingerboard binding » MOP jeweled
Headstock binding » MOP jeweled
Nut » locking
Width » 7-string
Hardware color » black
Bridge system » Schaller 7-Str Floyd Rose Tremolo
Tuning machines » Schaller M6 locking
Straplocks » Schaller
Pickups » DiMarzio (evo, evo single, evo)
Pickup rings » metal
Control knobs » volume, tone
Other controls » none
Pickup selector » 3-way lever
Flight case » no
Ideas arn't set in stone (still thinking about the pot leaf) but I got about $2500 between my tax return and some other savings to throw down on it. The R.I.P logo is gonna be custom lettering

was there a typo?
btw, the reason I disliked em was cause too many people are buying them with no clue about what it feels like. But when I played one a couple years back I changed my views and had a new found respect for the brand. Your moms hot.

why only 25" scale on a 7? (might be personal prefference of course, I'm just curious)
if your getting a floyd you'll also get the locking nut, right? (or do you not want that?) if so: why the locking tuners?
other than that: looks fine (though I personally dont care for the leaf-inlay idea)

Well, if theres a floyd with a locking nut and locking tuners installed then thats just, well...extra lockage.
I don't want the baritone neck due to the uncomfortable feel.
Man, I'm trying to think of a good inlay on the 12th fret...I'd like to come up with some design that has my signature in it. I'm also trying to figure out why the fuck its over $4,000

Dude, I hope thats not true.
M=L, Pookie Bear! I remember you saying you played a stock Ran at a pawn shop in Denver. I remember what you had to say then to but I knew you would come around I have no ideal why it is costing 4k but you might want to draw up the ideal and email that visual to them if you are serious.
4K would be the highest I have ever seen a Ran cost.

extra lockage.... hmmmmmmm, ok. I still dont really see where it makes sense because if you have a locking nut, the tuners will have no influence anyway once the nut is locked (and I dont think you'll run into ANY problems in the short periods of time where the nut is not locked)
I wasnt really talking about a baritone-scale, I just wanted to know why you want to go shorter than standard (25.5"). if its just prefference, then thats fine of course
about the price: yea, I'd imagine all the jeweled MOP would add quite a bit and the custom inlay-work always adds a few $s of course
are you located in the US? if so and the RAN would get too expensive for you, there are plenty of really good luthiers in the US you could also order from. (its kinda like ENGL vs Mesa you know, one is european, the other american. the european stuff is damn expensive in the US and the american stuff is just as overpriced over here)

I'd like to know of a custom guitar shop in the US...I've been without internet for so long I'm kinda unhip to whats out there. I remember that Ran in the big D...the fuckin action was high as hell and felt like a Jackson (I fucking hate jacksons), but then played one of the members on this site's Ran and liked the concept of having your own personal features on it.
I sketched out the guitar at work today with my awsome pencil techniques so I'll mail em that...but if its gonna be $4,000+ I'm gonna shop around for another custom dealer.

you can always go to a local guitar store and ask if they have a certified luthier to do the job. i asked around for some dude to make me a guitar with these sort of features:
a guitar with a rhandy roads (a Rhandy Roads 3D VEE!) body, made of preferably aluminum. and a hollow body to give it super light weight(but without those F wholes on the body of the guitar to make it look like a semi hollow guitar!), and also a sort of acoustic playability. its neck would also be made of aluminum. its fret board, would be of ebony, with 24 frets, and a mother-o-pearl gothic-christian-esq cross running from the 10th to the 17th fret, with its horizontal cross on the 12th fret. and all the other frets(3,5,7,9,19,21,24) wont have anything on em. the head stock, would sort of look like a jackson headstock. pickups would be one EMG hum on the bridge. the bridge would be a SINGLE-locking floyd rose bridge.
in the end, you would have a body looking something likethis guy:
http://www.edromanguitars.com/guita...BS_3DV.2004.JPG
its head stock:
http://www.edromanguitars.com/guita...abs_hdstk04.jpg
and its fret would look like this:
http://www.cort.co.kr/DataBank/prod...zoom/EVL-K6.jpg
all in all, it will cost me about 1700(canadian dollars), though the guy is a lil unsure about the aluminum stuff, so it would have to be alder body. and those 1500 exclude the paint, the pickups and certain parts like tuners, the knobs and stuff...you can find those knobs and even bridges from ebay, so your cost may come down a lil.

Mkay... I won't even ask why you want an aluminium body, so I'm going to ask why you want a single locking trem?!

aluminium-body? aluminium neck??? why the hell that? wouldnt it be effected by temperature-changes and such things much more than wood?
single-locking trem?
oh, and sorry but I hate thats body and headstock design but if its your thing than thats fine of course *shrugs*
about american custom shops:
Christopher Woods http://www.christopherwoods.com/
KxK http://www.kxkguitars.com/
Mike Sherman http://www.sherman-guitars.com/
to name a few
I personally havent dealt with any of those guys, but have heard a whole lot of good things about all of them

And Moser Custom Shop . They are pretty expensive, like $3000+, but if you can afford it the playability and craftsmanship is insanely good, so I've heard. There are models that are $1600+, but the options are more limiting. They have both radical and more modest shapes. Go check 'em out and see what you think. I'm definitely picking up a few, once I get the cash rolling.

Long time no see 'round here M=L . If I were you id go for a local US custom. With all the import charges/currency conversions and foreign relations gone to shit, its really not worth that trouble/waiting.
Try contacting this guy ... http://www.myspace.com/theillustratedluthier , He made a fuckin' sweet lookin' 8 string for www.myspace.com/iambulb . Plus it'd be a more personal relationship between the guitarist and the 1 luthier, rather than through a company.
You go to that last slayer show? (im sure you did because of CC, who i missed because of the insane line that took forever to get in)

Ran guitars action
Hi,
I'd like to know if ran owners here had never had problems with string action
on their instrument (too high)?
Mine is neck-thru with a fixed bridge, adjusted very low, and all the same string action remains too high...
Thanks for your responses,
Styx

I did! Almost a year after I got my new Ran, but I expected the neck relief to change, being a new made guitar after all. Its not rare for a new made guitar to have neck relief problems within a year of two after construction, even if it is kept in its case 95% of the time. That is why an adjustable truss rod is installed in the neck. The truss rod can correct neck relief problems. THe only real danger you will ever have to worry about from a new constructed guitar is a warping neck.
Any half ass guitar tech will know how to adjust a truss rod for you. DO NOT TRY IT YOURSELF IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN TAUGHT HOW TO DO IT CORRECTLY! Costly damage can result from adjusting a truss rod without knowledge.

What Soulinsane said. I just waited for someone else to type it
I think this entire messageboard could be replaced by about 3 stickies.
1. Go to a store, find a guitar, try it. Don't like it? Try another. Like that one? Buy it.
2. Take it to a tech.
3. No one here will tab Atreyu for you.

Depends on the amount of neck relief correction needed. Mine took just less than a half turn before I got proper relief measurements, but I haven't had to touch it adjust it since then. I start with 1/8 turns first, setup, remeasure relief, and readjust the truss again in smaller increments accordingly until everything is perfect.

Quite a good metal-guitar, I've played the Cruizer. Loved the action. The tremelo-bar could be better.

Hurray,
After nine months of eagerly awaiting my guitar finally arrived on valentines day, it was love on first sight. The setup is perfect, I didn't have to make a single change and the sound is just how I wanted it to be, perfect. She is by far the best guitar I ever played.
The graphic is a penguin from the "cool bros" comicbook and is drawn by Boris Kiselicki. I saw it and I immediately fell in love with it. So I asked Boris his permission and he kindly granted me the exclusive right to use it on my guitar only. The inlay is my own logo which consists of my initials.

Basic specs of my guitar:
Left Handed neck thru xplorer with mahogany body, maple neck and ebony fretboard with 24 extra jumbo frets. She's Loaded with emg 81 in the tail and 60 in the neck position. I got 2 volume knobs because I never use the tone controls.
Rock on.

nicde axe man, i just cant believe ran still uses that cheasy cheaplooking logo, they should get some designer to design them a bruutal logo, since they seem to mostly build metal guitars, they should make a sick logo to match it IMO.

I dont think the logo is bad at all.
I actually use my Ran for a lot of music. i'll play stuff like Something Corporate and Say Anything on it. i dont think they should make it so it's targeted only toward metal players.
EDIT: just made this to test out my camera:

Awesome new Rans here. I especially like that explorer, the penguin is sweet!
I just received this from Dariusz:

the woodwork is done...in week or so we will start the painting process. The delivery date will be a bit delayed...I think, real time is mid April.

This wait is driving me nuts! Mid april...that means 11 months waiting time in total.

ran guitars are getting more expensive now days.for the same guitar specs. 2years ago it was about 1200e,but now is almost 1800e.(cruuiser shape, alder body, maple neck, ebony fingerboard,neck-thru, with no bindings at all, one color paint, floyd trem,h-s-h combination, dot inlays)
now we are all paying extra credit.they are still cheap if compared to brand names custom shop, but sooner or later they would be in the same price range.
i'm realy turned on on ran guitars for 2years now,and when i finaly have 1500e dedicated for new guitar,i have to save more money.

true! I think I ordered mine right before the last increase in price so I'm kinda lucky I guess. might have got quite expensive with the custom body-shape, custom inlay and all

it was strange to me because cruiser body shape guitar, specified on their webpage, with mahogany body,2 EMGs,and even bindings, but without inlays is priced at 1280e.perhaps they didn't updated this price.Mine specs is similar except bindings, alder body, and have dot inlays.
I'll perhaps try rek guitars to see their price for this specs.its interesting for rek guitars because they say:"all the prices are negotiable"
but on the other hand ran guitars are tested by many users,i can see that they are 100% good guitars, but don't know much about rek rekguitars.com

I have already ordered Rek neck-through. I became convinced to them because of their customer service. More over Rek is a real custom shop and you can order a guitar exactly as you wish. If I am not wrong they can make for about 1800 Euros a neck-through with bindings, good quality hardware, hard case and shipping.

+1
just because alot of the guitars they do look generic and metal, it doesnt mean that they arent a proper custom shop or are limited. it just means they have a different market and customer base to other custom shops. simple as.
plus, make sure you dont forget that you CAN ask for stuff that isnt on the order form. you can even send blueprints, dimensions and pictures for your own shape if necessary.
ran are as custom shop as you get, if anything, more so than others. some of the others are too gaytarded and scared to copy other manufacturers shapes.

that pretty much confirms that their prices have gone up recently. I think a very basic guitar like this (no binding no fancy top/inlay/whatever) used to cost around 1000 some time ago, didnt it?

^ sad but true
and in the begening was under 1000,like 700-800e. i don't think that they will be over 2000e in the future, but who knows.I think that we should not talk about prices anymore(till next price raise :-( ).it's obvious that prices have gone uppp.

There may be some routing involved. I know a very skilled luthier that I'm going to take it to. Also thinking of having a string tree installed as well.

Adds string tension on the nut. I don't think it is really needed on a guitar with a tilted headstock and locking nut, but why the fuck not.

Hey there everyone. I'm new at this forum, so I just wanted to say hello to everyone. I ordered my first Ran early July 2006 and it should be ready around late April. I'm so excited and anxious to get the guitar finally after 10 months waiting on my hands
