Yes, Ran necks are the fastest, thinest necks there are, but keep in mind that it is a new built guitar. It needs special care the first few years of its life to help prevent that neck from wanting to warp. Just keep it clean, oiled twice a year, keep you tuning/string size consistant, and keep it stored in the case when not in use. Expect to have the relief, action, and intonation adjusted after this first year at the very least. It takes about that long for all the wood to settle correctly and adjustments might be needed. After that you will more then likely never have to do anything except clean it, oil it, change the strings, and tune it ( this is if you don't change the gauge or brand of the strings ).
Now pics bitch

Not in my experience. The neck on my Ran is noticeably fatter than the Wizard I neck on my RG.

Really? Mine feels much thinner then the Ibanez necks I played, but then I'm not a huge Ibanez junky and by no means play them often. I thought the Wizard I neck was the base design for the Ran necks but I could be wrong on that.
Someone asked Big D about the neck measurements once and he explained all this to them in a email. It was posted somewhere in this thread but I have no ideal where it is at now. I know one of the Ibanez necks was the base design for the Ran neck. Ran used that design and completely reshaped it thinner in most areas, or something like that. A Ran neck feels nothing like a Ibanez neck but they are closely related.
Perhaps Ran necks a fatter then the Wizard I. I'm not 100% sure one way or the other really.
How about,
"Ran necks are one of the fastest, thinest necks there are"

i just dont understand the habit people have of calling thin necks fast.
Give a beginner a les paul and an ibanez RG and is he really going to play noticabley faster because of the ibanez neck?

the neck is somewhere between Jackson and Schecter necks, IMO. not too thin but not so thick either. i've played thinner though.

Standard ran necks are 19mm at 3rd fret and 21mm at 12th unless you order adifferent neck profile.....
Ibanez Wizards are 17-19 slightly thinner.....
And a Thinner neck will be slightly faster as it does not have as much wood to getin your way also a smooth satin finish neck will not be as sticky and perhaps restrictive as aglossed neck....

Hope this clears everything up a bit:
Quote:
Hi Michael,
the neck dimensions are as follows:
- width at nut - 1 5/8"
- thickness at 1st/12th fret - 19mm/21mm
- 15" radius
- C-shaped
Best regards
Dariusz Kuczynski

I don't know though, if the specs are the same for every shape, if you don't want specific measurements. I got the ones above for mine, Cruiser/RG shape with AANJ.
As a sidenote, I got an Ibanez Jem 555 as backup, and though the Ran neck is thicker iirc, my playing became considerably faster and cleaner on it compared to the Jem.

but for shred and wanky leads, yes, i do think thin necks help improve performance. however there is such a thing as a neck that is too thin, as there is such a thing as a neck that is too thick.
if your going to be doing fast scale runs and legato runs and sweeps at 200 bpm, do you really think when using a les paul, your hand would be able move around as fast as an rg with that big chunk of wood to wrap around?
but then again, doktorskell does have a point, it also depends on what you had learnt on, if youve been playing a les paul since the start, your obviously going to be at your best whist using a les paul as you will find an rg neck unfamiliar and too different. your technique would adapt to it and compensate for the thickness. you would adjust to get the size and shape of neck, therefore adapting your technique and diminishing the whole thin is faster ethos as you would find the neck comfortable and as a result find that you can move around quickly.
but i do think if a guitarist who has been born and bred on a les paul gets to grip with an rg, and gets to know it and becomes familiar/comfortable with it, they will notice speed increases and an improved technique. but this may require changes made to their technique which causes apathy and a resistance to change which may prevent a les paul user to "warm" to a thin neck.
as you can see, its an argument which will never be resolved...

The new site is awesome.
I just asked for a quote on a custom model.
That'll be one cool guitar if I ever get it made.
I even know what I'll have it named, because it's not Cruiser, Invader, Thunder or anything!
too!

Holy shit I wonder how those 5P maple/mahogany necks sound and feel? Mine has a solid one piece rock maple neck ( with no scarf joint if I'm correct ). I like it but what if I like the 5p neck better?
Mrs. Soulinsane would Kill me if I ordered another Ran... oh well. Time to buy another Kahler bridge and ship it to Poland I guess
EDIT: HOLY SHIT! THEY OFFER KAHLER BRIDGES NOW TOO!

I like one-piece necks.
I preferred my Yamaha's one-piece to a £600 Ibanez Prestige RG with a 5P. It felt like motherfucking sandpaper!

Sweet. Two of the gallery pics are of my Virgin. It's awesome recognising your guitar on a maker's website.
I can also see Turbo Rico's urban camo V, and a Def's blue carved top Superstrat on there.

Not a single pic of my Ran is on the new site Mine is the only one with a Kahler too ( known to me anyway ). Thats unique enough to deserve a place on the site isn't it?
My Ran is old school and perhaps was built just before the time he was taking quality pics of his finished guitars. I know a lot of people where watching this site to see pics of how mine turned out. Unknowingly, I was the first in North America to custom order a Ran and in a way tested the waters and opened the flood gates of future orders from this part of the world.
Thing is Ran still has to uses that damn bank wire thing. Its a pain in the ass to wire money to different countries, not impossible, but not your normal online purchase method. If they could only use PayPal or something else less painful and secure for both parties, I bet lots more people would place orders. Poland will have PayPal one day... I hope.

It's a cool new site.
Maybe more gallery photos will be added in time, but quite alot of people ordered RR's or Invaders, and I guess they only need so many examples of these shapes!
Really makes me want a Ran, but I've already gone with someone else, a friend of mine.

It is very awesome. There is something really juicy and fresh about greens that no other colour can get... even though I really dig deep blue (quilted, preferably) tops

Hey dudes, remember to ask Big D to include a t-shirt if you've ordered a Ran. We could recognise each other on the street, and greet each other with a secret Ran handshake.
Edit: On another note, I wonder how many Rans have been ordered as a direct result of this thread? More than 10?

That guitar looks great! I like no inlays fretboards, also good choice on pickups. i would order a ran just like that except with an OFR.

Cheers guys, I can't wait until it's built now.
Not sure how long it'll take, I don't imagine it'll be that long though; 4-5 months maybe?
And don't worry, there'll be lots and lots of pics as soon as it arrives!

Another newbie here. Just finished reading this thread, and man, what a thread this has been. Excellent Ran information.
I'm hoping to have my first Ran ordered this summer.
The specs:
R or L handed: Righthanded
Scale: 25.5
Body shape: Bernie Rico Vixen, pictures included.
Construction: Neck-thru body
Body material: mahogany
Top wood: yes, flamed maple
Binding: no binding
Bevels: black bevels, see pictures
Pickup configuration: H - H
Finish: Natural top, natural mahogany back, see pictures
Headstock shape: Bernie Rico Vixen with iron cross cutout, see pictures.
Neck material: Mahogany
Headstock cover: wooden
Headstock finish: natural, match body finish. See pictures
Neck finish: Natural mahogany, clear gloss
Fingerboard material: Ebony
Number of frets: 24
Fret size: I haven't decided this one completely yet, I assume the size doesn't affect the price? If it does, please inform.
Fingerboard inlays: abalone iron crosses on frets 1-22, nothing on the 24th fret, see pictures
Fingerboard side inlays: plastic dots
Fingerboard binding: none
Headstock binding: black, see pictures
Nut: graphite
Width: 43mm
Hardware color: black
Bridge system: Schaller Stop Tailpiece/T-O-M
Tuning machines: Schaller M6
Straplocks: Schaller
Pickups: EMG
Neck: 60
Bridge: 81
Pickup rings: plastic, black
Control knobs: Volume, tone
Pickup selector: 3-way toggle
Hard case: yes
I received a quote for a similar one a week ago, 1440e. It had binding instead of bevels, bound neck with no inlays, alder body/maple neck. Otherwise it was pretty much the same.
I wonder how much this iron cross version will cost.
Here are some pics of what I'm talking about here. I streched the Ran logo horizontally a bit, looks nicer in this body style I think.

Hi Phil. It was the new Ran website that finally made me make the decision of getting a Ran. The custom gallery is filled with awesome guitars, one is actually quite similar to what I'm getting. And if it's good enough for Jeff Waters, it's good enough for me.

It sure is. First I was thinking of getting the normal Bernie Rico headstock but after seeing that Iron Cross Vixen it was pretty obvious I had to make some changes to my specs.
Anyway, Dariusz just mailed me the prices for those changes:
- mahogany wings and neck + 20 euros
- abalone crosses + 220 (both sizes)
- streched Ran logo + 40
- iron cross cutout headstock + 40
- black bevels on the body and headstock (instead of binding) + add 30
Damn, those inlays are a bit expensive...
With those additions to my original specs, the price would be 1790e
Now I have a tough decision to make; iron cross inlays or no inlays at all

Although this shouldn't be an issue; it's a custom made guitar made for ME. I should get it exactly the way I want it. But 1790 euros...

Thanks, although I shouldn't take credit for it, it's all a design by Bernie Rico Jr. I would get a real Bernie Rico but that Iron Cross Vixen is ridiculously expensive, about 4800$.

Dude, if you're not aware what a scale length is, you probably don't need to be looking into custom guitars...
But you asked, so here you go:
Scale length, is the distance between the nut and the bridge.
The scale length affects the distance between each fret.
Common scale lengths are 25.5", 24.75", 25", 26", 27" (27 being a popular 'Baritone' scale length, for tuning in B or lower).
The longer the scale, the tighter the string tension in the same tuning with the same guage strings, hense 27" is quite long, and is used for lower tunings where strings would otherwise get floppy using the same thin guage strings.
A flight case is just a guitar case, but built mostly from metal, with reinforced corner joints and recessed handles and latches. They are designed to withstand rigourous touring. Flight cases are made any shape and size for anything (usually electronic equipment), Guitars, Amps, DJ equipment, rack equipment, PA equipment, mixing desks, even scientific equipment. Anything fragile thats gonna get knocked about a bit during long distance travel. They are of course, expensive, heavy and usually overly large, rectangular and awkward.
They are called Flight Cases because they are designed for travel. Also some airlines won't carry large cases/boxes as freight unless they have recessed handles/latches etc.

Don't feel bad. He forgot to say that most 24 fret guitars come in 25 1/2" scale length ( Jackson, Ibanez, B.C. Rich, ect. ). Its a pretty standard scale length for shred guitars and fits 90+% of most players perfectly.
FYI, most Gibson guitars are 24 3/4" scale and Fender are 25 1/2" scale. Basically the greater the scale the greater the distance between the frets, but only by a millimeters and most players never notice the distance.
25 1/2" scales will not do you wrong.

I know Kings real B.C. Rich custom V's are 24 fret 25" scale. I played one once, Kahler and all, and had it measured after. It was the same guitar that King plays and records with. It was heavy for a V. King and Bernie had personally signed the back of it too. It was a sweet ass guitar for $2,700.
If I had the money... I would have bought it. Having 2 kids kinda burned that fantasy into hell though

No worries!
I could have also mentioned Fanned frets.
Basically different scale lengths are used for each string, and the fret board is trapezoid shaped, longer at the top (bass side) than the bottom, with all the frets 'fanning' out so that the distance between them is longer at the top than the bottom. The nut and bridge saddles have to be set an angle too, rather than at 90 degrees to the neck's centre line.
This is used on specialized instruments like 8 strings, or ridiculous instruments which combine bass and guitar strings and tunings, with hideously wide fretboards.
Conklin guitars use them a fair bit.

Most people just use thicker strings. Thicker strings give a beefier tone generally.
If you are tuning REALLY low then a baritone scale length might be necessary, but a lot of people tune low on normal scale lengths with no problems. If you're tuning really low you should probably be playing bass anyway!
I think it's just preference really. I play 7 strings in standard B and I like 25.5" scale lengths. It's what I'm used to.

Today was a great day for mankind. Mankind being me, that is. I got my baby today! Yay! Pics! Yay! And I apologize for the superb quality, they were taken with a cell phone camera. Also I was holding the camera, which generates a lot of shaky-ness. Anyhoo, less yappin' more fappin'. (Also notice the typical swedish kitchen, or lantis-kök as we call it. )

Now, onto the info. Oh, and yes, I am a Hetfield fanboy. But in my defence, and also a last grasp to retain my metuhl-ness, I am also a Hevy Devy-fanboy. Plus I find explorers to be damn comfy to play.
Und the specs is as follows:
Mahogany body with snow white finish
EMG-81/85 pickups, gonna swap them around when I get the time. 85 in bridge pos. is the shizzle.
3-piece maple bolt-on neck with ebony fretboard, and I tell ya, the all-access neck joint feels sooo smooth.
Sperzel locking tuners
This mofo took about 10 months to build, because I wanted an inlay change, which forced D to make a completely new neck. Which rocks, because I could go nuts and order all the things I suddenly wanted, like the custom logo and bigger fretwire.
During my time as a guitar player I've played a lot of stuff. Pretty much anything between a newbie Squier to a custom shop ESP KH-2. This thing wins over everything I've played. Just... the beefiness. The sound is fatter than... a fat person. ( )
All in all, a great geetar. I'm really satisfied, and D really knows his shit. It's just awesome.

Aha... bah, sluta luras.
Oh... maybe we should stop bullying the non-nordic people. ^^ Since both Sweden and Poland is part of the EU, I didn't have to pay any tax or toll on the guitar. But since you're in Norway I guess it'd be a bunch more money. =/
Yeah well, I'm off to sleep now, been jamming constantly since 16.00 (or 4 P.M. for you... other guys). >_<

i want another ran...my v just flat out rocks.
how's the bolt on quality? it looks awesome. I'm definately getting a bolt next...just cause i feel the need for a high quality bolt.
I'm trying to decide between soloist and explorer though. i sent D a quote for a non-inlay, trans black bound fretboard HSS soloist and it was 1280 w/ case that's a price increase...
i might try and get one for 1000 Euro just cause i want a cheaper one. maybe i'll just go H-S with solid black finish. and no hard case...that should knock down the price a bit.
then again that would make it look caparison-y.
decisions decisions...

I've heard about these necks. Kinda like a combo. I don't know about them being better, but I bet they might sound a little different. I wonder if a pickup routing would basically go deeper then the neck wood? If so then they really wouldn't be muck different then set necks.

Thanks guys, I'll be sure to post lots of pics when I get it. I'm hoping to send the 50% deposit next monday.
I've read this whole thread but I've forgotten already; would Dariusz be willing to provide pics of the guitar while it's being manufactured? It would be pretty cool to see a few pics of the build process.
Anyway, I have to give Dariusz props for answering all my questions patiently and even on weekends. That's what I call customer service.
