every Met fan should have it, I didn't stopped listening since I got it,
songs I really liked where
Some Kind Of Monster
Dirty Window
My World
Sweet Amber
Purify
and I'm not really done listening to it all properly heh, these songs just came to mind, the DVD is a nice plus too, but in general the cd has a raw edge, good producing too.
No it doesn't have any 121 second solo's or anything, but I'm not really missing them

definately their best shit since justice, everything is better when you don't expect too much of it and that's what happened.
but i'd like it to have at least 2 or 3 solo's
i'll give it a second spin
frantic, sweet amber, some kind of monster, st-anger, all within my hand
are my favorite
three thumbs up

Do you have a copy?
I just started listening to it... Some Kind of Monster and St. Anger kick ass... Frantic was a bit strange, but not too bad.
Overall, the sound's not that great though. Though the playing's pretty good, the guitar tone could use a little tweaking. And what the fuck is Lars playing? On the plus side, the vocals are good.
Overall, it's... interesting. But good.

I dunno, I've never been a big Metallica fan(I do enjoy some of there classic shit though) but since I've seen/heard St Anger....I think they should quit and wither away.

from what I´ve heard, complete St. Anger/Frantic and a lot of clips, I don´t like the sound. But I get a downloaded version tomorrow, so I give it a final chance...

i got it today and i first watched the DVD then played it 2 times.
i like the first 3 songs, but then it starts to get a bit the same to me, and at some places in some songs I was thinking that a nice solo would have fitted in perfectly.
but in general i'll rate it 8/10.

Ok, I'm just tired of the little kids trashing it who have hardly heard the bloody thing. If you bought it and don't dig it, that's cool with me.

Why are people saying their opinions as questions? If you want to say that it sucks, say that it sucks, dont ask us if it sucks. Why? Because I'll say no. Cunts.

ahh PST, good work...
i've only heard st. anger, and that song is one smelly pile of shit. the production quality is shit, the riffs are shit, cept for the one palm muting riff which sounds like slayer, the singing is shit, and lars has always sucked behind the kit. oh and the nu-metal part (where the bassist joins in the singing) is also shit.
i hope st. anger is not the staple song of the CD, cause if it is, good job Metallica, you are officially washed up.

I totally agree with all of the above..not only the bassist supposedly sings, but in the video Hammet lip syncs too!
And whats with the jail they were at in the video? Kirk was probably dropping some coke off to make some extra cash due to Metallica's downfall.

This is a post-release discussion of the album, not an, "I heard a song on the radio, or I downloaded a few and it's crap" discussion.

Heh, now listening to Some kind of monster, nice shit, Shoot Me Again has some really heavy riffs in it too, It kinda sucks that they'll only play Frantic and St Anger live, because the other songs are better in my opinion...

Not a big fan of Shoot Me Again, except for the last couple minutes of it. It gets fuckin' nice around that time.
My few favorites right now are Some Kind of Monster, Dirty Window, My World and Unnamed Feeling

After a few listens of the disc, I like it.....but it gets repetitive for me. I really like Sweet Amber and My World. I can't seem to get into it as much as the old stuff but it sure beats load/reload for me.

I listened to entire album yesterday, and it sucks....
The sound quality is crap, I mean the drum kit sounds like a set pots and pans (is this the right word??). Overal I think it sounds like rage against the machine... I hate it... rating 5/10

Its just the way the album has been produced, it has a trashy edge to it, which makes the album sound more raw.
I guess they overdid it on the snaredrum sometimes, it sounds hollow, but its part of the mix I guess.
I don't know how the hell you can compare it to rage against the machine though

I like how sanderinos says "it sucks" and "i hate it" but it still gets a 5 out of 10.
Is that not funny to anyone else? Something I hate is not gonna get shit outta 10 from me.

Actually its not stupid when its true...Listen to those hollow sounding snares and tell me it doesn't sound like that Toxicity song by SOAD. (the part where all the little teen kids are going in a circle in a mosh pit in the music video)

The System of a Down thing is an opinion. Saying the album is great is an opinion. No one's opinion is "true" or "fact". Now move on.

Saying that 'they try to be like System of a Down' is conjecture. Saying that they do sound like them is opinion. It could be that System of a Down sounds like Metallica. It could be coincidence. It could be any number of things. It's not as thought SOAD was the only band to have that snare sound. You cant say a random similarity you find between two bands writing in the same genre at the same time is a 'fact.' Was Metallica trying to be like Slayer 17 years ago?

I think the album is pretty good. The guitar sounds are slammin, there are some pretty cool riffs, and the vocals (for the most part) are okay. The production on the drum sounds could be a little tighter, but they give the album a cool "underground" feeling. A few guitar solos every now and then wouldn't hurt either, but overall I'd give St. Anger a 8 out of 10. The DVD kicks ass too.
Some of my favorite tracks so far (in no particular order) :
Invisible Kid
Purify
Frantic
Dirty Window
The Unnamed Feeling

If that comment was directed at me, which I think it was, I'll have you know that I said " it sounds to me like they try to be a little like System of a Down"
Anways I got the album for an extremely low price. Mainly to complete my metallica collection. It sounds good loud. Even better with headphones. Some Kind of Monster is my favorite one so far. I haven't listened to the whole thing yet.

To be honest, the album was OK, the song St.Anger made me laugh when
it came to the part where it was like "You Push It Out" but later when
I bought the album, its actually you flush it out....
Lyrically the album sucked, heavyness of the album was better than
Re-load, over all I would give it a C-

metal=life: First of all, when I said it was conjecture, your saying 'it sounds to me' doesnt contradict that, it affirms it. Look up 'conjecture.' Secondly, later you said the comparison was 'true' when Def called it 'stupid,' which is a step beyond the earlier statement, truth being fact and not opinion.

The only song I have heard so far is St. Anger, and it sucks more than I thought possible. Complete and total crap. Way too repetitive........

I'm quite dissappointed with this album... The only positive thing i can find is that the pace is a bit more uptempo again.
Put on Anthrax's latest album after you listened to St. Anger and you realise how weak St Anger is, and even Anthrax's album wasn't that strong,at least it wasn't boring and had good songs. Oh well...
Oh,the cover art is decent too.

Anthrax's new record kicks the shit out of St. Anger.
I dig St. Anger alot though, just not quite as much.

Just got it today, listened to it twice. It very cool, my only complaint being that some tunes feel like Metallica forced themselves to have no guitar solos....I think it sounds unnatural at times. Anyone else noticed this?

Are you kiddin, the songs are far to long and repetitive. I only like Invisible Boy and even that isn't very good.

It's Invisible Kid, you moron!
I didn't really miss the solo's that hard, but I agree with Warnevere, sometimes theres a couple of riffs that sound forced in.

he probably downloaded some songs.
It's pretty obvious he has trouble communicating in this forum.
cunt.
somebody is going to get your ass anyday soon.
Back to St. Anger.
Anyone seen Rock Am Ring? Tallica played a great show there, I just noticed today that there are St. Anger posters all around the trainstations here.
Hm, I'm going to try and steal one this weekend, they look cool and the commercialism around metallica sucks, so its cool both ways
anyone got tips on breaking open poster holders at stations? I tried taking out the rubbers which worked but the plastic plate won't come out, I allready it with a screwdriver. Mm, maybe just take a hammer and ram out the plastic plate? If it was a glass plate it would have been much more easier

Time to start bashing bands again.......oh yeah i've missed this!
Only song i've heard off the new album is St.Anger......and i don't know how you all feel about that song (i haven't read this thread...too long) but i think it's worse than Load and Reload....which i thought was impossible.
If the rest of the album is better, then i might give it a try. But if it's all like that i don't think it's worth it.
Anyways......what are the other songs like? I've seen brief posts like "no solos" and such.....that true? I don't really "need" solos in the songs i like, but i've come to expect it from metallica. I also don't find the riffs too heavy either.....they sound kind of heavy, but the lyrics and singing are crap, which ruins the mood of the music.
Maybe it's that new bassist who fucked things up.

Hahaha, I figured if you ever came back you wouldn't waste time doing this.
The bassist wrote nothing and played nothing on the album either.

well the bassist (bob rock) didn't do anything to interesting on the album so he didn't fuck up.
live, that rob trulijo does have a monkey act, I dunno about him.
st. anger is my least favorite song of the cd, some parts sound pretty gay... there's some pretty neat songs on the cd though...

There are so many people programmed to hate this album, and there are just as many that are programmed to love it. It's hard for either side to give. I know people that have heard it and will openly bash it, yet in there house by themselves they listen to it. I know these people. I know people that openly love it to death, but privately they hate the sonofabitch.
The problem is the internet, plain and simple. The internet has distorted everyone's own opinion into being someone elses, or, it's just everyone trying to act like whoever shot out the first opinion.
I could really give a shit what anyone thinks, I just find it hilarious how many people hate this record, yet continually bash it recruiting people that have never heard it.

I know what you mean slayme...and although you might think that of me, i know i'm not like that myself.
Metallica got me into metal, so i have to give em props for doing something good for me. But i've honestly disliked everything they've put out since Load. I gave the songs a chance and i've liked maybe 1 or 2 songs off Load and Reload.....but beyond that it meant nothing to me.
I've been anxious to see what this new album was like, and i think by what everyone says they should have picked a better song as a single instead of St.Anger because honestly first impressions are pretty big......and my first impressions of 2003-Metallica is downright low and poor.
I'm still gonna try and listen to the album somewhere (for free of course), but i'm not getting my hopes up for mind blarring riffs and insane leads like they used to do.......i'm just readying myself for something similar to the bands they're touring with.

I finally trust myself to have an opinion
Well, I'm sure many of you here have jumped in way earlier than myself and said 'stuff' about this album. Personally, I haven't read what you've written, and I don't know what you think. I never had a Metallica love affair as a teenager and I tried to listen to all the tracks off St. Anger before trusting myself to an opinion.
My opinion is this: it's pretty ass-bleedingly miserable.
The sound falls squarely into ugly territory. The Load style of songwriting has been combined with a guitar sound more reminiscent of Corrosion of Conformity or Black Label Society than the Metallica of old... you know, that sleazy Southern rock guitar sound. I like this sound elsewhere, but here it really doesn't fit. There's a moment about 2:00 into Sweet Amber that I'd swear is done by Zakk Wylde.
The songwriting is damn near forumlaic. Take the way Some Kind of Monster starts. 4 by 4's and 4 by 8's overlaying each other for two whole minutes of pointless riffage before Hetfield opens his mouth.
And the snare sound - argh! It sounds like someone banging a timbale with a metal chopstick. Maybe it's my quirk in my song or my speakers but it stands out like a hard-on under a priest's cassock, and it's a litle bit annoying after the first 5 minutes. There's part of the title track where it really shits me sideways.
Noticeable absence of solos or riffs that hold any technical interest.
The lyrics are nothing to write home about either. They're shallower than... Weija. I also notifce Mr. Hetfield has really taken to singing these days. Nary a bellow or a scream from start to finish. Well, I suppose it fits the music better than his previous style... imagine how ridiculous Angela Gossow would sound singing with this band.
Verdict? Don't buy this fucking album. Even if you're a Metallica-up-the-ass die-hard fan of old, this album will probably give you a clump of haemorrhoids instead of any kind of release.

I've seen Tallica live yesterday, it's nice to see they haven't lost their fucking touch.
pretty cool show, 50.000 people singing along with M.O.P. is pretty impressive.
anyways, they played frantic, there was a huge moshpit but only the first heavy part heh, the rest of the stuff sounded much tighter too, a 2 hour show, pretty cool.
compared to their performance, I think the cd isn't up to their standards, maybe they'll learn something out of it and enhance the stuff they've done on the good songs, as long as they get the mix sound a bit more together too. a bit trashy is good, but if you've heard the cd more then a couple of times, the industrial snare gets pretty annoying.

Yeah, I hope they do a shitload of touring (they'll be back in holland in March, Lars spread the word after the show)
maybe they'll get their act completely together and see what direction they wanna go, who knows we'll get a completely kick ass album next year or something. I don't think St. Anger is that bad, but they could have done a better job on it. Anyways, if you get the chance, see them live, and you'll see that they are still verry much alive and kicking!

I personally dug the album. It's no Master or Lightning, but it's still pissed off. At least there are thrash breaks in this one.

I like it, it definitely grows on you, the only way it is a little like nu-metal is the way is uses guitar to add texture instead of as a solo instrument. However saying shit like the kirk singing makes it nu-metal thats shit, they've had jason (ex -bassist) singing in previous stuff. i like its attitude they way its fuck all conventions.
fav tracks are
unamed feeling
invisible kid
st anger

Just to clarify, because it seems like it's a common misconception, all vocal tracks on the album were recorded by James. There is no Kirk vocals on the record, he only lends a hand live.

That makes a little more sense. I've seen tons of interviews with Kirk, and he's got a girly voice....i was wondering what the hell he'd been taking in order to produce the somewhat heavy "YOU PUSH IT OUT" part in that song.

i got it a week before it was supposed to come out expecting a lot out of it. i heard it was supposed be more like metal than their recent stuff, which it is, but its different. it wasn't what i would expect out of metallica. i love their old shit, it's incredible... the music, the solos, EVERYTHING! when i put st. anger in my cd payer i noticed there were no solos in the first few songs so i went through ever one looking for solos and i was dissappointed to see that there wasn't even one!! why would a guitar player with so much talent like kirk not throw a single solo in the entire album?! i guess my overall opinion is, the cd is good, but being that its from metallica, i was expecting a lot more.

I just got it and I like about 3 songs, each of which I only like a 2 min. section out of. It's MetallicA putting their twist on nu-metal. Hopefully their next effort will be better...

They should just stop trying. They obviously haven't made anything worth listening to in well over a decade....it's about time they call it quits.

i donno about worth listening to, but haven't made anything worth buying in the past decade. Load and Reload did have some OK bluesy/rock songs.

I think st. anger is better if you don't compare it to puppets and stuff. Make it sound weak..
As a Metallica record it's funny. They used to create trends.. now just following them. I'm glad it doesn't sound that nu-crap more than it does..
Still, it's a good cd. Maybe worst they've ever done. But good.

I have (correction) had alot of respect for metallica. They were the pioneers of heavy metal. But then they put out Load. After that I have been waiting for a them to put out a good album that were songs that they created. St Anger is a change from there original sound, however I think it Sucks!! There are no solos which I think sucks. And i think they have lost there rythm for good. It is a sad year for metal I just hope Iron Maiden or some other band can bring it out of the dirt. As for metallica, I'm still waiting.

Load is under-rated, it is pretty good, reload is just gay.

No wonder. When making Load, they got so many songs done so they had to leave some out. And that's what Reload is. There is few songs worth listening but it kinda sucks still..
