ahhh they were some of the originals though. theyre allowed to take themselves seriosuly, it wasnt dress up and copying for them, they were the ones who started it. besides, the first few darkthrone albums are awesome
in related news, the new gorgoroth slays and is the best black metal ive heard in a really long time but i dont listen to it often. its better than 1349 which is the only other modern BM band worth listening to imo

Being dumb first doesn't excuse being dumb. Sure, it's better than being dumb second (or 35,000th), but there's still the option of being smart, or at least not being dumb. Conviction also doesn't excuse being dumb.
I still only like Emperor and Immortal (and I realize that Immortal also played dress up in the most egregious of ways, but here's where we get to the one thing that does excuse being dumb: doing something good despite being dumb). Oddly enough, black metal seems to have had a good influence on some non-black metal bands; I suppose this helps to even the score for all the great bands whose influence has been terrible.

Wow, . Finally someone who feels the same way about black metal. Ha. I'm not denying there are some great bands in the genre (Immortal, Emperor, Dissection is growing on me) but lots of the stress they place on non-musical stuff just puts me off. Like another metal genre that will remain glamerously nameless, there are lots of similarity between gangster rap and black metal, that are not part of the music. Both put a big emphasis on being a "real thug" and "true". Both place a good deal of your self worth in relation to where you were born. (east, south west coast for rap, scandanvia for black metal). Both also use clothing and appearance as a BIG catch too, large designer clothes for rappers, grim evil corpse paint for black metallers, making the rappers appear bigger than they are, and the black metallers more dead than they really are. I'm sure there are a few more I can't think of right now...

I used to be huge on black metal, and I mean huge, but nowadays I find the only bands worth my attention are 1349 (like you said) and Mayhem. And thats probably only cause the drummers (Frost and Hellhammer, respectively) are sick beyond sick

i like quite a few black metal bands
some do suck, just like any genre, but there are some awesome bands out there.
i do think many take themselves way to seriously though

but isnt the mere fact that it puts you off for this reason just as bad as them creating that reason. what im trying to say is, if it is viewed as wrong to like music due to image... isnt it just as wrong to dislike something due to image?

Probably as much as you want to be reamed by the various people you've argued with in this thread throughout the course of your little whiney, attention-grabbing histrionics.
Wait, make that less.

www.alicesrecords.com based in the UK that do it for £12.99 (approx $24) but only accept British pounds (you could use a credit/debit card)
they have Domine Non Es Dignus and Eschaton.
as far as i know there is no extra delivery charge (i dont pay one, but im in the UK). might be worth looking if you havent already.
i love Anaal Nathrakh too, as well as Emperor and a bit of Burzum and Darkthrone.

Sure, you can call me a kike. It hurts me as much as stepping on goose down pillows in combat boots, and it's always a sign of having lost an argument. Well, that and following the letter of the attention-hound BM posers that came before and trying to deny wanting to be looked at. The former is just more common.

fans of Nokturnal Mortum, or other symphonic/atmospheric folk BM, go Kawir
Telchines the magic isnt that great, IMO, but the other three songs are awesome! Zeus and Daughters of the night have lots of folk.

I can hear some Black in COB but the vocals kind of ruin it.
I just classify them as just Metal at this point.

hah, the everlasting struggle over CoB. "not black", "just metal", "melodic death", "black", "power metal", "black power metal", and ive already decided to just call it neoclassical metal, at least the old (good) stuff, i dont even know much about the new.

for the CoF thing now: Yeah they are on Sony, yeah some wannabegoth listen to them, and they're well known (for a BM band) but, the old cd's are good. some songs on Midian are great too. But the newest album, I didnt like it alot thought.
Uuuuhhhhhhh said it, they play gothic metal now.
|
The new album is like a combination of Judas Iscariot, The Cure, and Poison. Pretty fucking lame if you ask me.

CoB is not really black metal, more Powermetal with screams. But I like it!
And CoF is more gothic. I still like it, but they went back by going the commercial way they do now.
I mostly like Dimmu Borgir and Graveworm.

While I have to agree that Belphegor fucking kicks ass (look at my name), I'd be more apt to call them death metal, although they DO tred the fine line sometimes.
Thornspawn is the shizzle, as are the other bands.

Yeah, that shit gets quite annoying. I guarantee I listen to as "true" of black metal as there is... when I feel like it. It doesn't mean "fuck those guys because they don't fit what I think is right". Dimmu and well, at least old Cradle of Filth have a very viable existence in metal just as Slayer, Iron Maiden, and Metallica do.

yep. some people dont even call Cradle black metal, so to say they are "untr00 black" is quite the obvious. and then to not like something due to this particularly ridiulous point of view is just childish. you like the music, or you dont. hey guess what guys CoB arnt tr00 black m3tal!!1!!11
i can understand if someone doesnt like Cradle or Dimmu for the music, but people should get over that trv3 nonsense.

yeah, its a shame. i used to love CoB, but then some guy in a hooded robe floated out of a dark alley and told me that they arnt tr00 black. i decided then and there that i would throw away the albums i had of them. because, after all, who cares if you like the music, its only about being tr0o.

A friend of mine is crazy about CoB, and he is at the point of being able to play the whole song 'Kissing the Shadows' (also according to me their best song). And someone I see nearly every day (a sweet girl, yes!) is mad about CoB. I made her hear Dimmu Borgir (Mourning Palace, one of their best songs) today, and she liked it!
I like CoB too, for they did not even do an attempt to make black metal. They can play quite fast.

I still remember when you dressed up for the last one. At first I thought you were a long lost member of Demolition, or maybe an evil rogue Road Warrior from another dimension. Needless to say, you weren't nearly that awesome.

5. Blut Aus Nord
I personally don't have an opinion on Cradle, since I haven't listened to them in about two years.

What do you guys think of Satyricon? They are probably as close to true black metal that I've got in my collection, and I only have Intermezzo II and Volcano. What other albums would you guys recommend?

Well I doubt we have similar taste in music judging by your avatar and the fact that those two albums you mentioned suck. Still, I will recommend Dark Medieval Times, The Shadowthrone, and Nemesis Divina. You may like Nemesis Divina the best and you can download them all for free with this program. http://www.slsknet.org/

Judging by underaserpantsun's avatar, we have a very different taste in porn.

The Shadowthrone.. although all 3 albums I mentioned have keyboards. I would just download Nemesis Divina as it's the most popular and for good reason. It has stood the test of time. It also has better production than the other two albums.

I'm very ashamed of Kovenant. I didn't know them that well, but going from Black Metal to Industrial? They sound very close to Rammstein.
"In Times Before Light" was a good album, although I only have the re-issued version, and I heard they are re-issuing a third version. Was the original version any good?

Hateforest's "Scythia" is fucking amazing and almost horrifying in sound with the unusual use of deeper vocals in black metal.

I'll answer this thing seriously now.
I don't know how strict you are with the term "Black Metal" but these are my favourite. No doubt some will offend you true fans of the genre...
1. Cradle of Filth
2. Marduk
3. Belphegor
4. 1349
5. Dimmu Borgir

I like all those bands (maybe not so much CoF anymore), but yeah, only 1349 and Marduk could be really considered black metal although that makes it difficult to label the rest of the bands, doesn't it?

I'm gonna add "Nyktalgia" and "Sterbend" (same people) .. if any of you know these bands hehe
EDIT: OH!.. and.. Neige kicks ass. If you don't know who he is and you like Black Metal.. do a bit of research on the first 3 bands of his list

Yeah, I've heard Nyktalgia before which I like and don't have a way of finding, but I'd never heard Sterbend before tonight and that was some interesting shit as well.
