You got to be kidding me with this thread but here goes...
Hetfield- The "yeah yeah" & the whining vocals are just... well words cant describe how fuckin horrible & annoying it is.
Mustaine- Dude sounds like hes constipated or taking a hardcore shit when ever he sings anything.
No disrespect to the fans of these two but its just my opinion.

Mustaine for sure. Everyone in here keeps rambling about how Hetfield rules on Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning. Let us not forget how Dave Mustaine helped write those songs. Of course Hetfield's vocals are better but Mustaine's guitar skills rape Hetfield's. Still Mustaine's voice gives and interesting twist to the Megadeth music. I personally like it more than Hetfield's. I also dont see the point of Dave Mustaine getting kicked out of Metallica. For one, didn't everyone in Metallica go in for rehab too? Also, Mustaine isn't a whiner. He is probably just pissed because he didn't get his chance for rehab. Wouldn't you be pissed too if you were Dave and when you walked down the street and all you heard was some asshole yelling "Metallica!" in your face? But nonetheless without the firing of Mustaine we wouldn't have any of the songs now. There might be something between them again someday...

Fucking hell. He had an influence on 2 songs from those albums. Hetfield and Ulrich were the creative force behind Metallica on their best albums (RtL, MoP, AJFA) not Dave Mustaine.

quite true John, but how many good songs from early Metallica/Megadeth has Dave written, against all the early Metallica stuff James wrote? plus James had Lars' help doing it.

Dave really didn't write early Metallica songs. He was given songwriting credit because they were always scrupulous about how people were credited. People have read way too much into Dave's name appearing in the credits to a bunch of songs for which it's pretty clear he didn't write more than one riff, while completely ignoring the fact that it's impossible to find one of those songs without Hetfield and Ulrich credited. Mustaine deserves a lot of credit for what he did do, but let's not give him credit for all the shit he didn't do, too.
I'm pretty sure Mustaine was fired not because he had a drinking problem, but rather because he was a violent drunk who'd just beaten up James and Cliff. I'm also pretty sure that there's a big different between the rehab they wanted him to go in for in 1983 and the rehab James went in for twenty years later. I don't really see those as equivalent.
And they're all whiners. The history of Metallica/Megadeth is a history of whining. As their musical talent faded, their ability to wine grew exponentially. Somebody should make a graph illustrating this.

Leave it open. There are lessons to be learned in the fact that this debate, which should be, if anything, a personal issue between two people that should be buried in the past by now, has genuinely eclipsed straightforward appreciation of either Megadeth or Metallica. To the point where it's difficult to compliment one without, at least implicitly, insulting the other. Also in the fact that it apparently won't die, no matter how old this thread is.

Well i think hetfield is better than mustaine even though mustaine gets to play some lead and hetfield sticks to rhythm and some occasional solos like the clean one in master of puppets.
But don't forget, mustaine formed megadeth because he wanted to get revenge on metallica

I say this : 80's era Metallica wins out over 80's era Megadeth. However, The System Has Failed is better than Load, Reload, and St. Anger put together IMO. Mustaine may have been the underdog in the 'prime' of all of their careers, but he's really come back and shown the world who really has it where it counts once everyone turned 40. I really think The System Has Failed speaks for itself, and that its a job well done, as opposed to the same shit Metallica puts out every three years.

Actually you should have said 'all the bad ass Metallica songs were written with Dave' as he didn't write any songs on his own for Metallica they were all co-wrote with James and Lars. And on that point I wouldn't say Jump In The Fire is bad ass, it's hardly a strong song!? When the Jump In The Fire EP came out a review just said 'Urgh, jump in the bin more like' I bet the guy who wrote that review was kissing ass big time when Metallica made it big

They all feature riffs by Dave. He didn't write the songs. I've said this about 10,000 times. Anybody who can be the least bit objective knows this, since Metallica's songwriting process is well-documented. Even Dave doesn't claim to have written those songs. Don't you claim it for him.
The way I think about Metallica and Megadeth is this: Dave, for pretty much his entire career, was one step behind Metallica because he let them define the rules. During the 80's he tried to outdo Metallica and couldn't; finally, with Rust in Peace, he made something that could stand with their best. Unfortunately, it came out in 1990, and by then the Black Album had come out and the rules of the game had changed; Metallica was verging on creative dissolution and Dave, in his endless attempt to outdo Metallica, sent his own band on the same downward spiral (in other words, he wussed out. Risk is both anything but aptly named, and the definition of wussing out like Bitchtallica). Finally, they both decided to put out a 'return to form' album, but this time something interesting happens: Dave finally manages to outdo Metallica. Whereas they put out really one of the most execrable metal records to make it to my ears, he put out an essentially soulless rehash of the more successful parts of his career. Is it great? No. Is it even good? Not really. But does it outdo St. Anger? Sure. Good for Dave. Unfortunately, the present has very little effect on the past, and even though The System Has Failed is better than St. Anger, claims that Dave Mustaine wrote Metallica's best songs remain false.

Oh I don't know, he did some pretty dire and mediocre material in the 90's.
And what was all that blubbering on the Some Kind of Monster DVD?
Dave also made 'claims' on riffs from Leper Mesiah during his most bitter drug fueled phase, ......actually if you look you can see plenty of riffs in Megadeth songs that were born from Metallica songs.

You know what , your right. They're all a bunch of washed up hasbeens I just have a little more respect for Megadeth these days. I just recently saw Megadeth and at least they still rock. They played all the old shit and they still had there hair. I wouldn't pay $100+ just to see what remains of Metallica ruin all those songs I know and love.
Oh yeah, what's with Lars $1000 snair head that sounds like a trash can? It looks like he's upgaded to a 4 piece set now. James should start working on his shot out vocals insted of bitching at his drummer during band therapy sessions.
