No, to much drinking will kill your guitar career. Do not for a moment believe that booz will help your playing. It is a old "rock an' roll" ideal that is completely unrealistic. Drink to enjoy it for what it is and then leave it at the party before you play. Music DOES NOT=Booz.

I was kidding. Iv'e never played while under the influence, I'll have to try it sometime. I think that when you're drunk, things sound better to you, and it's easier to have fun. Having fun on stage = confidence, and when the audience sees you up there brimming with confidence, it makes you look better, and your fuckups aren't noticed as much. That's just a theory, though.
I do intend to get drunk sometime and play to see how it feels, but I doubt that it will be a whole hell of a lot of fun, since drinking makes me numb up and shit, and makes my fingers feel biggen, (thicker), then they are. I can't see it helping me, though. Anyway, to cut the bullshit in half, that post was a joke, and I don't think you should play drunk. I don't care who did it, I wouldn't do it. If people are paying money to see you play, you mgiht as well make sure they get their money's worth by not being shitfaced and sucking. That's just the way I feel about it. |

I'm trying real hard to get into Megadeth, but it's just not working all that much for me. They got some good songs, but Dave's vocals, and most Megadeth songs in general make me want to kill myself. There are many exceptions to this though...Tornado of Souls, Symphony of Destruction, some others off RIP and a few more songs, but in general their songs are rather depressing. Hetfield is definately the better vocalist here. As for guitar skills, I think Dave won that.

Well i like em both but in different ways. Hetfield is a much better singer, and he is a good guitarist though Kirk always gets to go with the leads (i wonder why). Dave is a fucking good lead guitaist but doesn't sing as well a James.

Well some of his riffs/ideas appear in the song 'Ride The LIghtning' as he is credited in the writing notes(whether he played the full song as we know it is debatable and I guess we'd never know the truth) and Dave also claimed Leper Messiah was his riff, this was never proven nor challenged in a court of law.
Mind you Metallica stole riffs from everybody in the early days, just listen to early Venom, GBH and Motorhead and play 'Guess which song on Kill 'em All this riff is in'. 
Has anybody noticed how the verse riff to Peace Sells is similar to the main riff to Escape

I'm with Chris. I'm sick of this argument. Both bands ruled very, very much, so we should just be happy for their having ruled for us throughout the 80s. Both players changed the face of metal rhythm guitar playing. Both bands had a huge influence on the music that came after them, with an almost shockingly small amount of it being bad. That should be enough without all this dick measuring.
Though I'm sure there's a plaster mold of both in some groupie's trophy room, somewhere.

I know they have inspired alot in the mid 80's but thats all the credit they get from me. Dont forget bands like Slayer, Venom that were around at the exact same time that were playing far heavier music. Hetfield & Mustaine were always a joke to me. I always hated Megadeth & thought they were just a cheap version of Metallica (How can anybody get into Mustaine's I GOTTA TAKE A SHIT VOICE). Anything after And Justice For All was pretty weak you have to admit. I have no respect for these 2 artists except for Metallicas 1st few albums.

Although I am not a huge fan of megadeth, i will go with Mustaine for technical proficiency and skill. Hetfield had it back in the day but has completely lost any ability to write good music.
in terms of thrash i usually listen to more along the likes of kreator or possessed. Neither megadeth nor metallica have done it for me.

I really wish Metallica would have just quit after "... And Justice For All". I have to agree with Mansley : Blow for blow, in the early years Metallica is the better band, in my opinion. In the long run, I'm going to have to respect Mustaine and his band much more, however.
And Great Lariat ... 'tis a shamed he's banned. Some of that was actually 'laughing out loud' material.

Mustaine the black belt would beat the everloving shit out of Zakk the tough guy wannabe. However, in an ego contest it would be quite close.
Many of Dave's lyrics, even in Megadeth's peak period, are incoherent. Kinda like a barely-there heroin addict wrote them. Add that to the ones that seem written entirely in order to compete with ones James wrote and I'm not very impressed. The only mitigating factor for believing Dave's a better lyricist is St Anger, on which the lyrics sound like a 14 year old's diary set to rhyme over sloppy, uninspired guitar riffing and Igor Cavalera's childhood drum kit played by a gnome. But ignoring that, Dave's responsible for some of the most incoherent, whiney, and self-obsessed lyrics ever put to paper that would take a metaltabber to believe were good.

Zakk's big, but that doesn't make him tough. It's an image thing. He has a tough guy image that he created entirely in a time when it was cool to be tough, after having a glammy image in a time when it was cool to be glam. It has no bearing on his music. It also has no bearing in reality, and, in reality, Dave would kick the shit out of most metal guys, including Zakk and his greased up biceps.

Mustaine wrote most of Metallica's good songs anyway and is a ridiculous guitarist and had 3 o 4 good albums with megadeth. Hetfeld didn't do shit and sold out harder then Mustaine, and can't play guitar, so Mustaine the better musician. Also, why the hell did Hetfled's voice change whne he was like 30? He was probably 18 or so with Kill 'em All and suddenly the black album comes and he sounds like Toby Keith. Must've hit puberty late.

I would go with Mustaine on being the better of the two. As for Zakk Wylde he is a very great musician. When I first saw him with his band "Pride And Glory" he was a little guy(not the much larger and muscular guy we know now).

Dave didn't write most of Metallica's good songs. He wrote some riffs that Metallica gave him credit for, usually sped up absurdly (listen to him fuck around with the Jump in the Fire intro on the boot of Megadeth's first show. It sounds stupid played as fast as he can. I mean, really stupid) and arranged haphazardly. There's a huge difference between writing riffs and writing songs. The old Metallica writing process was for James and Lars to receive demo tapes from each member and to keep and rearrange them as they saw fit. Dave didn't write Metallica songs any more than Kirk did. Popular misconception among Dave fanboys, but no less a misconception for that.
